I became a son-in-law in the United States
Chapter 3 The Kennedy Family
After saying that, Jia left without looking back. She eventually chose a bedroom that wasn't too far away, which would make it convenient to come and go while maintaining distance. It was the perfect choice for this kind of superficial marriage.
At midnight, perhaps because he had drunk too much, Luther was too hot to sleep. He took a cold shower and finally calmed down.
It's impossible for me to be a live-in son-in-law; I'll never be one in my life.
Even if the father-in-law were the emperor, it wouldn't work, let alone the small Kennedy family.
In later generations, a young man like Luther would probably never have the chance to come into contact with such a wealthy family in his entire life.
However, if I were to return to 1927, with my foresight as a time traveler, it wouldn't be difficult for me to stir up some trouble in that era.
In 20s America, opportunities abounded, people's confidence was at an all-time high, they felt the future was bright, and everything seemed so wonderful.
In this era, electricity began to become widespread, and cars entered thousands of households.
In addition, items such as telephones, radios, vacuum cleaners, and refrigerators have gradually become more common, and installment payments are also supported.
Although the times were beginning to go mad and misfortune was gathering in the shadows, for Luther, opportunities were still everywhere.
I'll stay at Kennedy's place for a while, using this cheap father-in-law's influence to develop my business, and then go out and start my own business whenever I get the chance.
As a prominent figure in the internet industry once aptly put it, "If you catch the right trend, even a pig can fly."
And the opportunities that followed were countless: the stock market, war, Hollywood—each one a money-printing machine, making it hard to be poor.
For an ambitious young man determined to stir up the winds and ultimately achieve peace for mankind, there could be no better time than now.
How did that quatrain go again?
My son has vowed to leave his hometown, and will not return until he has achieved fame and success; why should he be buried in his native land...?
This era is just right.
And so, filled with excitement and anticipation, Luther quickly fell asleep.
When he woke up the next morning at five o'clock, the Kennedy family servants were already busy.
The Greek cook was the first to get up and start preparing breakfast. He would first cook oatmeal, then make the sauces and broth for lunch, while also preparing simple breakfasts for the other servants.
In this household, the butler and personal servants are of higher rank, and their breakfasts need to be prepared separately.
After the chefs started cooking, the maids quickly took their positions, first sweeping the stairs, then wiping the doors, windows and utensils, and finally preparing breakfast for their masters.
After all this was finished, it was already seven o'clock, and the butler and personal servants were all up. The butler held a brief meeting to assign tasks for the day before waking the master to prepare breakfast.
Breakfast was mainly eaten by Kennedy's children, while the servants would bring it in separately for Kennedy and his wife.
When Luther came out, he was surprised to find that Gia had already gotten up and was holding a newspaper and coffee, eating and reading it carefully.
Just then, a figure drifted past, and when Luther got a good look at him, he realized it was a very handsome man.
She is about 1.8 meters tall, with blond hair and blue eyes, a well-proportioned figure, and a charming smile.
This was none other than his brother-in-law, Gia's brother, and Old Joseph's eldest son, Daniel.
It's a bit of a shame, though, that Daniel is a playboy with no real ambition, but he's very good at throwing parties and picking up women.
Despite graduating from Harvard and currently taking over part of Joseph Sr.'s business, he generally loses more money than he earns and is notorious for his extravagance in Boston.
Logically speaking, at Daniel's age, he should have taken over family affairs and become his parents' right-hand man, but he still eats, drinks, and has fun, and basically doesn't do anything serious.
Daniel was in a good mood when he met his brother-in-law for the first time and took the initiative to greet him:
"Hey buddy! How was last night? Any problems?"
Luther smiled faintly: "Thank you, but I still prefer to figure it out myself."
Daniel wanted to ask more, but suddenly felt a chill from behind. He turned around and found that Jia was staring at him with a cold look that seemed to be able to kill.
Daniel immediately backed down: "No, my dear sister, I'm just worried about your happiness in life. I've heard that European nobles aren't very good at it, so..."
"Daniel!" Jia put down her book and said bluntly, "You should care about what you're supposed to care about!"
"Okay, okay, I won't say."
The siblings had a battle of wits from afar, and Daniel was completely overwhelmed. After simply eating some cereal and drinking some milk, he fled in defeat.
Next up are Gia's younger brother and sister. This younger brother is none other than John Kennedy, who later became the President of the United States.
Unlike other children, Johnny Kennedy was frail from a young age and a frequent visitor to the hospital.
To put it simply, he was sickly; he had almost every disease a child could get.
For example, he has had infectious diseases such as whooping cough, measles, chickenpox, mumps, rubella, and bronchitis.
In addition, his digestive and endocrine systems were not very good; he suffered from celiac disease and Eddie's disease.
What Luther found most incredible was that this little guy had actually had scarlet fever.
In addition to the above-mentioned diseases, his spine is also not very good. It is congenitally deformed and unstable, and sometimes he has difficulty walking.
As for other minor problems, there are simply too many to count.
In short, it's a miracle that he's still alive.
Because of this, young Kennedy couldn't go to school for most of the year; he was too weak. He ended up staying at home, and was very bored.
What's heartening is that after battling illness for so many years, the little guy has developed a resilient and unyielding character, which is far better than his older brother's.
Upon seeing Luther, young Kennedy, with wide eyes and a curious air, asked like a little adult:
"Mr. Luther, I've heard you own a castle in Germany, is that true?"
Luther nodded: "That was a long time ago."
"So you've fallen on hard times? Otherwise, someone of your status would probably look down on a silly girl like my sister."
Luther choked for a moment, completely unexpected that the little guy would say such a thing.
"Do you think your sister is stupid?"
“Of course,” Kennedy Jr. glanced at Gia not far away, lowered his voice, and whispered, “She actually wants to go into business. There aren’t many people in the whole of America as crazy as her. To be honest, I’m afraid you can’t handle her.”
"This...is indeed a bit crazy..."
Luther glanced at Gia not far away and felt a sense of admiration.
It's important to understand that in 1927 America, women had virtually no independence or freedom. Once married, a wife had to depend on her husband for survival, and before marriage, she had to depend on her father. Going into business on her own was nothing short of a pipe dream.
In other words, even if Gia were willing, the legal and social environment at the time would not allow it.
Legally, a married woman is not considered a legal entity; she is automatically covered by her husband and cannot even own property in her name. How can she do business?
In terms of social environment, even if women can enter the workplace, they are mostly waitresses, shop assistants, and teachers. There is almost no such thing as a female CEO, so it's no wonder that her brother-in-law thought Jia was crazy.
After exchanging a few words, the brother-in-law wiped his mouth and hurriedly ran away.
As he was leaving, he said to Luther in a rather friendly manner, "Mr. Luther, from now on you are my brother-in-law, my family, right?"
Luther nodded: "Yes, we're family."
"If one day the Kingdom of Bavaria regains its glory, will you let me be your knight?"
"Haha," Luther patted his little head and said meaningfully, "Little guy, that chivalric style is outdated."
"What will be popular in the future?"
Luther paused: "Guns and rhetoric."
