I am the Enchantress!
Chapter 5 Winged Kobolds
Winged dog-headed man.
Compared to ordinary kobolds, they not only possess the ability to fly, but also have higher agility.
Their primary method of attack is to throw stones or daggers from high places.
"call out!"
Lyle had already drawn his bow and fired a sharp arrow into the sky.
Archery is always a game of shooting from high to low.
Although the arrow was accurate enough, it was too early for the movement to be exposed, and it was barely dodged by the agile winged kobold, only grazing the edge of its wing.
"hiss!"
The kobold let out a sharp screech, and in the blink of an eye, nearly ten more of its kind flew out from the dark corner of the cave ceiling.
Stones rained down from the sky like a storm.
The battle is about to begin!
Unlike their composure when facing ordinary kobolds, in this battle, the adventure team was clearly on the receiving end.
Although this beast is only two words different from "dog-headed man," the difficulty of carrying out the mission has directly increased from "easy" to "difficult."
The reason is simple: the ability to fly is far too precious on this continent.
Low-level warriors typically lack anti-air capabilities. Aside from firing wildly into the sky with their clumsy crossbow skills, they are basically helpless against aerial monsters.
The mage has quite a few anti-air spells, but Wilder doesn't know any of them.
The only useful member of the team was the ranger Lyle, who had no advantage in terrain.
As captain, Cyrion's tactics remain simple yet effective.
That is to hide.
"Hide behind the stone table! Quickly!"
He held high his thick shield to cover his teammates as they moved, and fist-sized rocks rained down on the shield, carving shallow pits into the hard surface of the white oak.
"What the hell? Why are these beasts killing each other?!" Thanks to his superior bloodline, Gru could perfectly hide behind the stone table without having to bend over.
The few ordinary kobolds lying in the pool of blood were clearly half-dead from being smashed by these winged beasts with stones.
"It is said that kobolds are jealous of the wings of winged kobolds, believing them to be a blessing bestowed upon them by an evil dragon. Although the two kinds of creatures are of the same species, they are natural enemies."
Cyrion crouched behind the stone table, using his large shield to shield the heads of the group, and answered the dwarf's question.
"Looks like we weren't the only ones planning a sneak attack at daylight; these bastards beat us to it!" Gru blew on his beard and cursed.
"Cyrion, should we retreat?"
Lyle, maintaining his bow-drawn posture, asked briefly.
Their mission was to eliminate the kobolds; the winged ones were obviously not included, and besides, they had already kindly helped wipe out the entire kobold colony.
Most importantly, they can't win, so the best option right now is to retreat.
but……
How do we evacuate?
Nearly ten winged dog-headed men hovered overhead. Once they left the shelter of the stone table, Cyrion's great shield would not be able to defend against the stone attacks from all 360 degrees.
Wilder could use his "oiled feet" technique to test his slickness against the kobold and see if Wilder's throw was faster or his was more slippery.
However, this act of abandoning teammates by using hidden magic might just earn him a fatal arrow from Lyle's back.
"Veldo," Cyrion asked suddenly, gazing at the torches on the rock wall, "can your [Oily Spell] be cast on the cave ceiling?"
"Great idea!"
Gru slammed his fist into his palm, his expression excited. "Then I'll set the cave ceiling ablaze! They can only fly low, and my axe will chop those beasts to pieces!"
Even Lyle, who was usually very reserved, showed a look of anticipation.
Wilder gave a wry smile.
Without Newton, you guys really wouldn't understand universal gravitation!
In theory, the "Greasy Technique" involves releasing a cloud of grease in the air and then letting it fall to the ground.
It's not like that thing, how could it possibly shoot onto the top of the cave?
but……
Try it.
As a novice mage, Vildor was hardly an expert on the principles of spellcasting, so he figured he might as well try anything.
"I'll give it a try."
"Alright, Lyle will shoot arrows into the air to draw out the enemy's energy, and I'll use my great shield to block the damage. Gru can use this opportunity to get a torch."
Cyrion began to deploy tactics, "As soon as Gru gets the torch, Wildo will immediately cast [Greasy Spell], and Gru will throw the torch up to ignite the cave ceiling!"
Operation begins!
Lyle held the arrow against the edge of the shield and, with his excellent eyesight, fired four arrows in quick succession!
"hiss!"
The winged kobolds hissed as they dodged the arrows, then hurled stones at the great shield. Cyrion gripped the shield tightly with both hands, the immense impact causing blood to seep from his knuckles.
"Gru! Hurry!!!"
Gru responded and leaped out, heading straight for the rock face.
[Greasy Spell] The spell takes ten seconds to cast. Vildor has already begun to prepare, and his slightly trembling fingertips are surging with wandering white light.
"We got the torch!" Gru's voice came through.
Wilder's spell was ready, and a dazzling white light danced across his palm.
Cyrion's strong muscles bulged with veins, and his bleeding hands clenched tightly as he slowly rose to make room for Wilder to cast his spell.
Wilder took a deep breath, extended his hand beyond the shield, and pointed lightly at the sky above where the kobolds were gathered.
A smear of grease slowly rose into the air.
It's now!
He imagined the movements of the characters in the game, his fingers suddenly jerking upwards, trying to give the oil an upward acceleration.
"Gru, throw the torches down!!!" Cyrion roared.
Just as the torch flew towards the top of the cave.
"Snapped!"
A pool of grease fell heavily, landing directly on the five kobolds on the ground who were barely clinging to life, making their dying existence even worse.
The torch struck the cave ceiling with perfect accuracy, sending up a few sparks before falling to the ground.
It took no more than twenty seconds.
The operation failed.
Newton was awesome.
Gru's position was exposed, making him the new target of attack.
The winged kobolds all turned their attention to each other, and stones rained down like hail.
"roar!"
Gru dodged left and right, while simultaneously swinging his axe to chop at the incoming rocks. He was quite agile, but he couldn't withstand the sheer number of them.
"Bang!"
A fist-sized rock hit him squarely in the knee.
The dwarf grunted, his body swayed, and he knelt down just a step away from his teammates.
"Gru!" Cyrion shouted, raising his great shield as he charged forward.
"Don't come any closer!" Gru roared through gritted teeth, forcing himself to stand up. He pushed off the ground with his right leg and scrambled back behind the stone table.
He leaned against a rock, veins bulging on his forehead, his whole leg trembling.
"Can you still walk?" Cyrion asked in a deep voice.
"Go to hell!" Gru gasped for breath. "Most of his bones are broken."
Wilder felt a pang of guilt because his spell had failed, and Gru had sacrificed a leg in vain.
"Gru..."
"Stop talking nonsense," Cyrion interrupted him, his gaze falling on the cave entrance not far away. "We must retreat."
"Lay will shoot arrows to draw fire, I'll hold up my shield to defend, and Wildo will take Gru and go first!"
Wilder was taken aback.
Should I go first?
Thinking back to how he had suspected his teammates of setting him up when they entered the cave, he felt increasingly uneasy.
"etc."
He suddenly spoke.
He gritted his teeth as he gazed at the torch that was still burning on the ground not far away.
"Perhaps... we can try one more time."
