Hogwarts Summoning Guide
Chapter 3 begins the process of collecting magical creatures.
Before they even reached Hagrid's hut, Bai Lin saw a dark shadow descend from the sky. Hagrid quickly stepped forward to block it between Bai Lin and the shadow. Bai Lin recognized it as Buckbeak, the bluish-white hippogriff.
Buckbeak affectionately nuzzled Hagrid's chest with its head, and Hagrid stroked its big head, saying, "You must be starving. I'll find you some fish to eat later. Oh, I was just about to introduce you to something..."
Bai Lin said, "Let me introduce myself!" Bai Lin stepped forward, originally intending to perform the traditional Chinese fist-and-palm salute, but considering that he was in a foreign land, he gave a slight bow instead.
Buckbeak tilted his head, blinked, and then bowed gracefully in greeting.
Hagrid exclaimed in surprise, "Professor Kelling, you are truly learned!" Bai Lin couldn't help but roll his eyes. Wasn't this the kind of knowledge you were supposed to teach to third-grade students? Actually, he was just Hagrid's teaching assistant, and Hagrid wasn't even a professor yet, but he was being so polite in addressing him like that.
Buckbeak is a good friend of Hagrid and Harry, and he even rescued Sirius Black. Although Whitescale saw that it was a Level 5 creature, he did not want to seal it away.
Bai Lin took out a bag of snacks from his suitcase—a salmon sushi—and generously fed it to Buckbeak. Hagrid was very happy that Bai Lin could make friends with Buckbeak and kept saying that he would definitely treat Bai Lin to the best ham rolls later.
As Hagrid's assistant, Bai Lin did not choose to live in Hogwarts Castle, but planned to stay in Hagrid's cottage. However, as soon as he stepped into Hagrid's cottage, he couldn't help but regret it.
Hagrid's cabin consisted of only one room, but it was very spacious, with hams and pheasants hanging from the ceiling. Although it was summer, the fireplace still retained some warmth, and a copper kettle sat beside it. In front of the fireplace were a large wooden table and chairs, and in the corner of the room was a large bed covered with quilts pieced together from scraps of cloth. Hagrid's winter mole-skin coat, as well as his crossbow, some ingredients for cooking, and items he would need for his Magical Creatures class, were all piled up in the room.
It wasn't that it was particularly rudimentary, but because Hagrid didn't have a refrigerator, the whole cabin was filled with the smells of all sorts of strange foods and ingredients, making it hardly a good place to sleep.
Hagrid lit the fire in the stove, placed the copper kettle on the stand, and said, "Please make yourself at home, Mr. White. I'll let you try my tea shortly..."
Bai Lin laughed heartily and said, "Don't forget I'm of Xia Kingdom blood; tea is something etched into my soul!"
He pulled a small tin box from his suitcase, inside which was a fragrant bottle of black tea. "Also, just call me Kelling. I have a lot of things to ask of you, Hagrid!"
Hagrid plopped down in the large chair and said, "I'll be happy to oblige. I haven't seen a wizard treat magical creatures as kindly as you in a long time. What's that called in the East again?"
"A kindred spirit, or as you might say, an instant connection. Mr. Hagrid, I hope we've had a pleasant year working together. Um, I urgently need some biological specimens, and I've made a list of them~" Bai Lin said, taking a folded piece of paper from his pocket and handing it to Hagrid.
Hagrid tensed up when he heard the word "specimen." If Whitescale were to harm centaurs, unicorns, or Thestrals, he would do everything in his power to stop him.
"Uh, twenty mandrakes... twenty rats... twenty Floo caterpillars... twenty chicken ferrets (Hagrid's favorite meat) and that's it?" Hagrid was a little puzzled, not because these creatures were difficult, but because they were too simple. These were all ingredients for many potions, and could be easily bought in Diagon Alley.
Bai Lin laughed and said, "To be honest, I'm imitating Master Newt (the protagonist of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and I'm working on building a new habitat for magical creatures. The work has just begun, and we need some basic creatures to conduct habitat experiments."
Hagrid was clearly intrigued and said, "Has the Ministry of Magic finally taken action? I really..." Hagrid choked up as he spoke.
Bai Lin: "..." You're such a big guy, yet you're so sentimental.
Bai Lin quickly took out 20 Galleons and stuffed them into Hagrid's hand, saying, "This is the initial funding for the research. Although it's not much, the funding will be substantial as the research progresses."
Although Hagrid manages the Forbidden Forest, his salary is very low. He doesn't embezzle the forest's specialties for personal gain. Even his favorite mead is obtained by trading his prey for it at the Hogsmeade pub. 20 Galleons can buy him two months' worth of drinks.
Hagrid patted his chest and agreed, and White Scales stayed at Hagrid's hut. The next morning, before dawn, Hagrid went out in high spirits and returned at noon with two large cages, one containing mice and the other containing caterpillars.
Bai Lin didn't have enough magic to knock them all out one by one. Instead, he had Hagrid capture the small animals one by one and then seal them directly. Bai Lin also figured out the pattern of sealing. As long as the target magical creature lost its ability to resist, it could be directly added to the encyclopedia.
In the blink of an eye, the Pokédex entries for the mouse and the caterpillar were completed, and the display on the back of the Pokédex changed to [Total Pokédex Completion Score: 10, Pokédex Magic Bonus: 1, Summoned Beasts: 0, Magical Creature Affinity: +2].
My own attributes were also adjusted to: [Bai Lin: Strength 13, Magic 15 (+1) (Evaluation: A Muggle who can play a few tricks)] Sure enough, the Magic added by the encyclopedia was directly added to Bai Lin's attributes.
In the afternoon, Hagrid continued his efforts and obtained another 20 chickens and 20 mandrakes. However, Hagrid was quite reluctant to hand over the chickens and chickens, so Whitescale gave him 5 Galleons, which made Hagrid very happy.
As for the mandrakes, Hagrid wore large earplugs and put them into a large black cloth bag. They were difficult to handle because the Silent Charm had a very weak effect on mandrakes. If twenty mandrakes screamed at the same time, even a dragon might not be able to withstand it.
Bai Lin was prepared. He first plugged his ears tightly, then put on winter earmuffs, and then used all his magic to cast a "Marilya Transparent!" spell on himself and Hagrid, so that they could not hear anything at all.
Following Bai Lin's sign language, Hagrid pulled the mandrakes out of the bag one by one, and Bai Lin sealed them one by one. After working for half an hour, they finally dealt with their prey, and their magic power became 15 (+2). The encyclopedia also added a new summon: Mandrake Scream (Level 1). Bai Lin exclaimed that all his hard work had been worthwhile.
At night, a bright and beautiful moon shone in the starry sky above Hogwarts—a sight rarely seen even in the wilderness in later generations. Bai Lin glanced at Hagrid, who had been busy all day and was now fast asleep, took a one-handed longsword and a hunting net from Hagrid's weapon case, and secretly slipped out of Hagrid's hut, heading alone towards the Forbidden Forest.
Tonight is the night of the full moon, and the werewolves deep in the Forbidden Forest will be restless and come out to hunt. Bai Lin is going to hunt one of the werewolves.
[Werewolf: A level 3-7 creature. Powerful werewolves can tear apart lions and brown bears; they are bloodthirsty, ferocious, and extremely dangerous.]
Although it sounds terrifying, throughout the entire Harry Potter series, werewolves are found in the Forbidden Forest, which is very close at hand, but there are never any reports of werewolves in the Forbidden Forest harming people. Hagrid even took his children to the Forbidden Forest for lessons, which shows that the werewolves in the Forbidden Forest are only low-level species of about level 3, which are relatively safe.
There aren't many low-level creatures in the Forbidden Forest, and Bai Lin is pressed for time. Even if he increases his magic power little by little, he probably won't reach the level of an ordinary wizard by the time school starts.
Even before his transmigration, Bai Lin was already quite adventurous; otherwise, he wouldn't have traveled alone to remote mountainous areas. After arriving in the magical world, he became even bolder. Relying on his iron sword and instant-cast Chinese spells, he decided to take a gamble and turn his bicycle into a motorcycle!
