Chapter 249 Shuten-dōji

Opening the iron gate leading underground and descending a stone staircase, you'll find yourself in a small elevator shaft. This elevator is quite old, dating back to the late 19th century. The cabin is essentially an iron cage, but the wrought iron railings are exquisitely crafted, woven together to resemble classic neon landmarks.

Having come this far, Hiroyuki Edogawa certainly wouldn't back down at the last minute. He followed Bai Lin into the elevator. This old-fashioned elevator naturally didn't have complicated buttons, only three buttons: "up," "down," and "stop." Bai Lin pressed "down" without hesitation.

The iron cage descended slowly amidst a somewhat jarring mechanical noise. After passing through a section of the shaft, the temperature suddenly rose sharply, and the view opened up before us.

Bai Lin was quite surprised to discover that about thirty meters underground in the mansion was a huge natural cave, and that flowing lava could be seen dozens of meters below.

The cave was terrifyingly large, practically an underground world. Even with Bai Lin's keen eyesight, he couldn't see the cave's boundaries. However, the space didn't extend that far beyond a few hundred meters. The iron cage elevator they were riding was suspended by an iron cable and slowly descended. Directly below, there were some man-made structures, much larger than the mansion on the ground. Lighting fixtures covering the ceiling and walls illuminated the cave as if it were daytime.

The iron cage landed steadily on the top of the building, and Bai Lin opened the gate and strode out.

Hiroyuki Edogawa was stunned by the sight before him. His mind was filled with the thought of reading ten thousand books and traveling ten thousand miles. How could an ordinary person see such an underground landscape? The cave must have been a space torn apart by geological activity. Looking at the stone walls on both sides, there were layers of rocks, and various rocks in red, yellow, white, brown and so on formed beautiful geological pictures. There were some stalactites on the top. Looking up, the smooth surface of the stalactites reflected the light and looked like twinkling stars.

"Welcome to the Fujiwara family's Shirako Research Institute... What's it called again... Sorry, I can never remember..." A voice reached their ears, but they couldn't see anyone or tell which direction the voice came from.

Bai Lin's expression was solemn. The Ship of Light would not have abandoned such a large underground research institute, nor would it have been left unattended. Just from this voice, Bai Lin could sense that this was a powerful opponent, and he couldn't even tell whether the other party was human or a ghost.

Hiroyuki Edogawa gripped his wand tightly, nervously looking around to find the source of the sound, but to no avail.

"No need to look anymore, I'm right here..." The voice rang out again, and Bai Lin and Edogawa Hiroyuki turned around sharply. They saw a figure sitting on top of the iron cage of the elevator they had just been riding, speaking to them.

This was a handsome man with a somewhat alluring appearance. His age was hard to guess. He had long, gray hair that was loosely tied in a bun at the back of his head. He was shirtless, revealing a strong but not overly muscular physique. If Bai Lin were to describe him, he would be a typical K-pop pretty boy.

Even without the man introducing himself, the encyclopedia system had already thoughtfully sent Bai Lin a prompt:

The shikigami "Shuten-dōji" has been discovered. Threat level: 7.

Activate the new main quest: The Encyclopedia of the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons

The Illustrated Compendium of One Hundred Demons: Back in the Heian period of Japan, due to various reasons, natural disasters occurred frequently for many years, and local daimyo rebelled, causing great suffering to the people. At the same time, the balance of the human world in Japan was broken, and many monsters began to appear, frequently attacking humans. Humans also established the Onmyoji (exorcists) to deal with all kinds of monsters. A certain Japanese god bestowed upon the strongest Onmyoji a divine artifact, the Illustrated Compendium of One Hundred Demons, which was enough to seal all kinds of demons and monsters and refine them into shikigami for the Onmyoji to use.

Throughout the Heian period, the Illustrated Compendium of One Hundred Demons had been lost to the common people. However, hundreds of years later, it was rediscovered by an ancient Japanese family. But this time, the one who possessed the compendium was no longer an Onmyoji who slayed demons and protected the people, but a wicked schemer who plotted to use the Illustrated Compendium of One Hundred Demons to rule all of Japan and even the world.

Defeating Fujiwara Ichiura's shikigami will reward you with a summoning illustration based on the shikigami's level.

Defeating Fujiwara Ichiura and fusing him with the Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) illustration will grant you World Development Points and significantly boost your Summoning Illustration Computing Power.

... (There were quite a few words, and Bai Lin only glanced at them. With a formidable enemy at hand, he had no time to study them carefully.)

Although he had only glanced at it, Bai Lin already had a clue. Fujiwara Ichiura must have obtained this "Illustrated Compendium of One Hundred Demons' Night Parade," which should function similarly to his own summoning compendium. However, instead of magical creatures, he sealed various Japanese monsters. Bai Lin had already witnessed Fujiwara Ichiura's various shikigami during the previous battle at Cloud Lake Cemetery, but at that time he was probably still engaged in the main quest to deal with Voldemort, so this new main quest was not activated.

Even without reading the mission description and the monster threat level rating, Bai Lin knew that Shuten-dōji was not someone to be trifled with. He was a notorious monster in Japanese history, not only powerful in his own right, but also had gathered a large number of monsters in Ōeyama, not far from Heian-kyō. The people within a hundred miles became his food source. The Japanese army had tried to encircle and suppress him several times without success. It wasn't until General Minamoto no Yorimitsu personally led a large army, with the help of many Japanese gods, and used underhanded tactics, that Shuten-dōji was finally killed. This shows how powerful Shuten-dōji was.

The flamboyant man before them leaned against the top of the elevator, looking utterly bored. With a flick of his wrist, a small gourd about twenty centimeters tall appeared in his hand. He poured out a colorless liquid, which he caught in one gulp, looking quite pleased with himself. A fragrant aroma of wine immediately spread out, even intoxicating Bai Lin, indicating that it was no ordinary wine.

"It's a pity you two are both men... I don't like eating men..." Shuten-dōji muttered as he poured sake. Clearly, in his eyes, humans were nothing more than food. Legend has it that he often seduced young girls and even developed a process for eating people, which was widely circulated among yokai. In short, he was very particular.

Bai Lin snorted coldly and pointed in the direction of Shuten-dōji, "Thunderbolt Blast!" He didn't have the habit of arguing with villains; hitting them with a detonator was his standard procedure.

A deafening explosion shook the entire cavern, sending flames soaring into the sky. After the explosion subsided, Hiroyuki Edogawa saw that the violent blast had reduced the entire elevator cage to scrap metal, but Shuten-dōji had vanished without a trace.
