Chapter 97 Pink Letter

As soon as Xia Lin stepped out of the hotel, the halfling hiding in the shadows by the door came up to him, speaking urgently.

"Xia Lin! Good brother!" Ezio pulled him aside, lowered his voice, but his eyes gleamed as he glanced inside.

"I'm asking you, just now, weren't there a few guests from the Upper City who went in? Was one of them—"

Uh, a particularly conspicuous lady?

Xia Lin found it strange that Ezio's information was too well-informed, after all, the orcs had only been there for a short time and hadn't even finished lunch yet.

"There are three from the Upper City," Xia Lin said truthfully, while observing Ezio's expression. "One of them is a human female priestess, Melissa?"

After all, the female pastor had a delicate and gentle appearance and a graceful temperament, which fits the halflings' usual "aesthetic preferences".

To everyone's surprise, Ezio immediately shook his head, his head bobbing like a rattle: "No, no, no, it's not that priestess."

He licked his lips, his face showing a mixture of reminiscence, emotion, and a special kind of expectation. "It's another one who's a little special—a lady."

Xia Lin then realized that, unlike the female priest in the hotel who had a poor appetite, this halfling in front of her clearly had a surprisingly good appetite.

Ezio was asking about the Dragonborn Kyle!

One is a cunning and clever halfling, obsessed with "collecting materials" and romantic adventures; the other is a calm, sharp, and exotic dragon-blooded female professional.

Aside from their shared profession, it seems difficult to connect the two in terms of race, appearance, or temperament.

Xia Lin was very curious about how they met. And judging from Ezio's attitude, it seemed that it was more than just "knowing each other".

"She's having her meal inside, and she seems—everything's normal." Xia Lin carefully chose her words. "You need to see her?"

Ezio seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, yet also seemed more nervous. He quickly pulled something from his pocket and shoved it into Xia Lin's hand: "Do me a favor, brother! Help me deliver this—to her. Don't say it's from me, just say—say an 'old friend' asked you to pass it on. Once she reads it, she'll understand!"

Xia Lin looked down and saw a small, sealed envelope in her hand. The envelope was a pale pink color, and when she brought it close to her nose, she could smell a unique perfume scent that was both crisp and sweet, clearly indicating that it had been carefully prepared.

Good heavens—Xia Lin looked up, staring at Ezio with an indescribable expression. This halfling, he's really playing games. Even delivering messages is like an underground rendezvous.

"You—aren't you going in yourself?" Xia Lin raised an eyebrow.

"No, no!" Ezio waved his hands repeatedly. Perhaps it was the evening breeze that brought a chill, or perhaps it was because he was too familiar with that special lady's temper. In any case, the halfling's ears turned red.

"Meeting now is not appropriate. Please help me, I beg you! I'll treat you to drinks at the Elf Tavern later, the best drinks!" After saying that, as if afraid that Xia Lin would change her mind or that the people inside would discover him, he darted into the alley next door and disappeared.

Xia Lin stood at the hotel entrance, somewhat disheveled, holding the pink letter that still carried Ezio's warmth and peculiar scent.

He shook his head, turned around, and pushed open the door, returning to the warm hotel room.

While Garu was still dealing with a large piece of stew, Kyle had already finished eating and was wiping his mouth with a clean handkerchief, still maintaining his elegant demeanor.

Melissa gazed absently at the night view outside the window.

Xia Lin walked to the table and, under Kyle's slightly questioning gaze, placed the pink envelope beside her.

"Someone asked me to give this to you at the door just now," Xia Lin said calmly, following Ezio's instructions. "He said it was an 'old friend.'"

He didn't need to explain anything further. The moment Kyle's gaze fell on the envelope, his golden vertical pupils narrowed slightly.

Her fingertips brushed across the pale pink paper, lingering on the wax seal written in some kind of cursive script. Clearly, she recognized the handwriting, and she recognized the source of the letter and the fragrance.

She didn't open it immediately, but gently pressed the envelope with her long, slender fingers covered in fine scales. After a moment of silence, she looked up at Xia Lin, her voice revealing little emotion: "Where is he?"

"I'm leaving," Xia Lin answered truthfully. "I only asked you to give me the letter, saying you'll understand after reading it."

"Hmph!" Kyle snorted softly, clearly annoyed, but a complex emotion seemed to flicker deep within his sharp golden eyes. "You've come all this way but don't dare come out to see me, coward!"

Melissa, who was standing nearby, was drawn to this little incident and temporarily pulled herself away from her worries.

Looking at her friend's expression and the pink letter, she seemed to understand something. A slight, knowing, and teasing smile crept onto her lips: "Kyle, this is that friend you always mentioned, right? I remember you said you had a huge fight because of a disagreement, and afterwards you swore you never wanted to contact him again? So why are you still receiving his letters now?"

A barely perceptible hint of unease flickered across the Dragonborn lady's face, but she quickly regained her composure—or rather, struggled to maintain it.

She didn't answer Melissa's question, but stared blankly at the soft pink in her hand, and murmured to herself, "No—he's different."

"The taste of love can be confusing, even dragonborn can't escape the labyrinth of love." Woody, the raven on Xia Lin's shoulder, suddenly sighed in his mind, his tone carrying a worldly-wise irony.

Xia Lin couldn't agree more.

Woody is right. This is true of the dragonborn Kyle in front of him, and it is also true of Melissa, the human priestess who rushed to his aid without hesitation after sensing that someone important was in danger.

Every adventurer seems to be busy striving for something—some for love, others for bread, or perhaps for gold and power.

Looking at them, Xia Lin suddenly felt that it might not be such a bad thing that she was temporarily attracted by "bread" and did not get caught up in the emotional turmoil of Kyle and Melissa.

At least, with a clear goal and a simple mind, one doesn't have to face those complicated and unspeakable entanglements and emotions.

Of course, he wouldn't dare say that out loud.

He silently noted to himself that after entering the forest tomorrow, in addition to being wary of monsters and the possible threat left by undead dragons, he might also need to pay a little attention to the emotional fluctuations of his dragonborn teammate.

After all, receiving a pink letter from a "cowardly old friend" would probably be hard for anyone to calm down immediately, right?

Garu was completely unaware of this little incident, or rather, he didn't care at all. His attention was entirely on the food in front of him, and he asked Jasmine to add another serving of roast meat.
