Chapter 141 Rune Puzzles and Perilous Path Exploration
The ancient runes that slowly emerged from the ground at the crossroads shimmered with a cold, eerie light, like eyes from the abyss, silently gazing at the crowd, exuding an unfathomable mystery. The lines of the runes were complex and peculiar; some meandered like serpents, others were straight and rigid like swords suspended in the air. They intertwined, as if weaving a secret hidden deep within the ages, yet reluctant to reveal even a fraction of it.
Huanmo crouched down, approaching the runes, her brow furrowed, her eyes filled with focus and confusion. "These runes are definitely the key; they might be the clues guiding us to our source of destiny. But what do they mean?" She reached out, wanting to touch the runes, but hesitated at the last moment, a vague feeling that touching them rashly might trigger unknown dangers. She bit her lower lip, a sense of urgency rising within her. Every minute that passed in this forbidden area gave the evil spirits outside a greater chance to recover, and their mission grew ever heavier.
Wanru also came over, her eyes carefully examining the runes, trying to find some clues in the mysterious patterns. "These runes look ancient and obscure. I've read quite a few ancient books in the past, but I have no clue about these. Could it be some kind of long-lost script or spell?" He scratched his head, beads of sweat sliding down his cheeks and dripping onto the ground next to the runes, making a soft sound that was particularly clear in the silent forbidden area, further highlighting the tense atmosphere of the group.
Ling'er opened her eyes wide, looking at the runes with a mixture of curiosity and fear. She gently turned the pages of the scroll, hoping to find the corresponding record. "Scroll, oh scroll, you've helped us so many times before, you must give me a hint this time too!" she murmured, her eyes full of expectation. But after flipping through the pages for a long time, she still found nothing. A look of disappointment appeared on her little face, and she felt a little frustrated, as if she hadn't been able to help everyone.
The woman in white leaned slightly forward, her slender fingers gently tracing the outlines of the runes in the air, as if sensing the spiritual energy fluctuations they contained. "These runes are not simple; they contain a peculiar power, perhaps closely related to the layout of this forbidden area or the life source of the evil spirits. However, we haven't yet been able to unravel their mysteries," she said softly, her voice clear and ethereal in the eerie environment. Her eyes gleamed with contemplation as she tried to solve the rune enigma.
Just as everyone was racking their brains but had no clue, suddenly, the light of those runes began to flicker more and more intensely, as if they had been activated by some force. Then, they slowly rose up, detached from the ground, and pieced together in the air to form a blurry map. There were two glowing lines on the map, pointing to two forks in the road to the left and right, but the lines flickered and seemed to disappear at any moment.
Huanmo was overjoyed and quickly stood up, saying loudly, "This should be the map that guides us. It seems that God is still looking out for us. However, the route is not very stable, so we need to make a decision quickly." Hope rekindled in her eyes as she looked at the two faintly visible routes, but her heart was once again filled with dilemma. After all, if she made the wrong choice, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Wanru looked at the flickering map, a glimmer of hope igniting in her heart, yet she remained hesitant. "Both routes look rather unrealistic. I don't know which one is correct. What if I choose the wrong one and fall into a trap?" She frowned, weighing the pros and cons in her mind, but still couldn't make a decision.
Ling'er stared at the map, her big eyes filled with tension. She bit her finger and whispered, "How about we flip a coin to decide? I really don't know which way to choose." Her words, though somewhat childish, reflected the helplessness and confusion of everyone present.
The woman in white gazed at the constantly flashing and changing map, her eyes slightly closed, as if she were trying to sense something. After a moment, she opened her eyes, her gaze fixed firmly on the road to the left, and said, "I feel that the spiritual energy fluctuations on the left road are more in line with the aura of evil spirits. Perhaps the source of my destiny lies in that direction. Let's go to the left."
Hearing this, although everyone was still somewhat apprehensive, they all nodded in agreement, seeing the white-clad woman's resolute expression. Huanmo took a deep breath and took the lead, walking towards the left path, saying as she went, "Then let's trust you this time, everyone be careful."
After stepping onto the left-hand path, the surrounding environment became increasingly eerie and terrifying. The sky above seemed to be covered by a huge black cloth, offering no light whatsoever. Only the faint glow of spiritual energy emanating from their hands and bodies barely illuminated the path ahead. The strange rocks on both sides of the road grew even more bizarre, some even beginning to ooze dark red liquid, emitting a pungent, bloody stench. The liquid dripped onto the ground, making a "drip-drip" sound, like the tolling of a countdown clock, pounding on everyone's hearts.
Huanmo gripped her sword tightly, warily surveying her surroundings, silently praying that she hadn't chosen the wrong path. "I hope this truly is the path to the source of my destiny. Please, please don't let anything go wrong, or we'll have let down our two seniors." Thinking of the black-robed elder and the gray-robed elder still struggling outside, her steps grew firmer. Even if it was a den of dragons and tigers ahead, she would never back down.
Wanru followed closely behind, her hands trembling slightly as she played the jade flute. The notes produced by the flute were no longer as steady as before, occasionally punctuated by vibrato. "This place feels increasingly eerie. I hope we can find the source of our destiny soon and get out of this hellish place as quickly as possible," she thought to herself. Sweat had soaked her clothes, but she was oblivious to it, her attention focused entirely on the potential dangers lurking around them.
Ling'er clutched the book tightly, her face pale with fright, but she still forced herself to suppress her fear and quietly chanted a spell, hoping to bring some help to everyone. "Everyone is bravely moving forward, so I can't be afraid either. I must keep going!" she encouraged herself in her heart, a hint of stubbornness in her eyes.
The woman in white walked at the very back, her fingers poised to play the guqin in case of an emergency. But as she walked, she suddenly stopped, her expression turning extremely grave. "Something's not right. This fluctuation of spiritual energy seems a bit abnormal. There's probably danger waiting for us ahead," she whispered, a hint of tension in her voice.
Upon hearing this, everyone stopped abruptly, their hearts leaping into their throats. Something seemed to be stealthily approaching from the darkness ahead; the faint sound sent their nerves into a frenzy. What awaited them? Was it a trap or a mechanism in this forbidden area, or yet another obstacle set by an evil spirit? They held their breath, their eyes fixed intently on the endless darkness before them, awaiting the arrival of the unknown danger…
