Chapter 142: Hidden Crisis and Perilous Situations

Darkness, like thick ink, enveloped them completely. The faint, almost imperceptible sounds seemed like a summons from the abyss, causing everyone's heart to race involuntarily. The surrounding air seemed to freeze, the silence thick with the acrid smell of blood, which only amplified the mystery and unpredictability of the unknown danger ahead. Every subtle sound felt like a heavy hammer blow, pounding on their taut nerves.

Huanmo gripped her sword tighter, the spiritual energy emanating from its blade flickering slightly, as if sensing the imminent crisis. She narrowed her eyes, trying to pierce the endless darkness to see what was causing the trouble ahead. She thought to herself, "Having overcome so many hardships along the way, I cannot afford to stumble at this final moment. Whatever it is, I will fight with all my might." Her eyes were resolute, her indomitable spirit radiating an aura of fearlessness. Although a fear of the unknown lingered in her heart, it was now suppressed by her unwavering sense of mission.

Wan Ru swallowed hard, his throat feeling terribly dry, and his hands were clenched so tightly that sweat beaded on the jade flute. He tried to calm himself, but his slightly trembling fingers betrayed his nervousness. "This forbidden area is indeed full of traps. I just thought I was finding my way, and now danger has appeared again. I wonder what kind of evil thing it is this time. I have to be careful." He took a deep breath, adjusted his playing posture, and prepared to use his spiritual energy wind blades to defend against any possible attacks, but his increasingly rapid breathing betrayed his inner unease.

Ling'er hid behind the crowd, her small hands clutching the hem of the robe the old man in gray had given her. Her big eyes were brimming with tears, yet she stubbornly refused to let them fall. She hugged the book even tighter, as if it were the last barrier that could give her a sense of security, muttering softly, "Ling'er isn't afraid, Ling'er must be brave, everyone is here, we can definitely defeat the bad things." But her uncontrollable trembling revealed her inner fear. After all, she was just a child who hadn't experienced much of the world, and it was already extremely difficult for her to maintain her composure in the face of these successive terrifying scenes.

The woman in white frowned, gently moving her zither forward. Her slender fingers rested on the strings, ready to unleash a wave of spiritual energy to protect everyone. Her eyes scanned the surroundings warily, her keen spiritual senses trying to detect any potential danger. "This unusual fluctuation of spiritual energy is quite troublesome. It likely conceals a significant trap or evil entity. Everyone, stay close together and don't scatter," she softly instructed the group, her voice cool yet reassuring.

Just as everyone was on high alert, suddenly, a series of black arrows shot out from the darkness ahead. The arrows whistled through the air and moved with incredible speed, reaching them in the blink of an eye. Wisps of black mist swirled around the arrows, clearly indicating that they were tainted with evil power; if one were to be struck, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Seeing this, Huanmo shouted, "Watch out!" She then brandished her sword, the blade transforming into beams of spiritual energy that blocked their path. The arrows struck the light barriers, clanging and clashing, sending up streaks of black sparks. Each impact sent a shiver of pain through Huanmo's arm, but she gritted her teeth, enduring the pain, thinking, "I can't let these arrows hurt anyone! I must hold them off!"

Wanru quickly began playing her jade flute, her spiritual energy transforming into sharp wind blades that flew towards the direction from which the arrows had come, attempting to sever the relentless source of the attack. The wind blades weaved through the darkness, creating gusts of wind, but the arrows were simply too numerous, seemingly endless. After severing a few arrows, the wind blades were overwhelmed by the subsequent barrage.

Ling'er closed her eyes and quickly chanted an incantation. Golden light emanated from the scroll, coalescing into a massive shield that enveloped everyone, adding another layer of protection. Although she was trembling slightly with fear, she did her utmost to maintain the shield, silently praying that the danger would pass quickly.

The woman in white plucked the strings of her zither with incredible speed, producing a stirring melody. Spiritual energy, flowing with the music, transformed into beams of white light that surged towards the densest concentration of arrows. Wherever the light waves touched, the arrows shattered, turning into black smoke that dissipated into the air. Yet, the arrows' relentless attack showed no sign of abating.

Just as everyone was beginning to struggle to hold on, the barrage of arrows suddenly stopped, and the surroundings fell into a deathly silence once more, with only the heavy breathing of the group echoing in the darkness. Before they could even catch their breath, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble violently, and cracks rapidly spread out, as if something enormous was about to burst forth from the earth.

Huanmo quickly steadied herself and shouted, "Everyone watch your step! This forbidden area is full of surprises!" She was inwardly groaning. She thought that dodging the arrows would give her some respite, but unexpectedly, a new crisis was looming. At this moment, she had no time to think and could only focus on dealing with it.

Wanru stared in horror at the widening crack beneath his feet, thinking, "What on earth is coming out? Could it be a monster even more terrifying than that evil spirit? How are we going to deal with it?" He instinctively took a few steps back, but almost tripped over a crack. After scrambling to regain his balance, he quickly gripped his jade flute, preparing to face the unknown challenge.

Ling'er turned pale with fright and burst into tears, crying, "I'm so scared, Grandpa, I want to go home!" But despite her tears, she held the book tightly, showing no intention of letting go. After all, she knew that everyone was in danger and she couldn't cause any more trouble.

The woman in white looked serious as she gazed at the spreading cracks. Uncertainty filled her heart, but she forced herself to remain calm and said, "Don't panic, everyone. Let's step back and assess the situation first."

Everyone hurriedly retreated, but just then, a huge black claw emerged from the crack in the ground. The claw was covered with sharp barbs and emitted a nauseating stench. Then, a massive monster slowly crawled out of the ground. It had a ferocious head, a gaping maw full of fangs, and a pair of eyes that flashed with an eerie red light, staring fiercely at the group.

As everyone stared at the enormous creature that had suddenly appeared before them, a chill ran down their spines. How could they escape the monster's clutches? Could they continue their journey towards the source of the evil spirit? Everything was once again plunged into a perilous situation of life and death…
