A Fantasy Love Story Across the Warring States Period
Chapter 140 A Painful Choice and Exploring the Forbidden Zone
The surrounding air seemed to solidify, so heavy it was hard to breathe. The mist at the entrance to the forbidden area, scattered by the gale, slowly gathered again, like a thin veil, yet exuding an indescribable eeriness, making the unknown interior of the forbidden area even more mysterious and unpredictable. Wisps of mist swirled around them, their cold touch like the chilling gaze of an evil spirit, sending shivers down their spines.
Huanmo gritted her teeth, her gaze darting back and forth between the injured black-robed and gray-robed elders, her mind a jumbled mess. "To go in or not to go in? If we go in, leaving these two elders here, what if the evil spirit attacks again? But if we don't go in, missing this rare opportunity, that evil spirit will surely cause a great disaster in the future." Her brows furrowed tightly, the sword in her hand trembling slightly from gripping it so tightly. She knew that whatever decision she made was like walking on the edge of a cliff; one wrong step could mean total defeat.
Wanru also looked conflicted and worried, beads of sweat sliding down her forehead and dripping onto the ground. "What should we do? It's a real dilemma. But we bear the heavy responsibility of stopping the evil spirits, and we can't give up because of a moment's hesitation." He looked at the gray-robed old man, his eyes filled with heartache and reluctance. The jade flute in his hand seemed to have become heavy, and the originally lively spiritual energy seemed to have stopped.
Ling'er's eyes were already red from crying, and she kept wiping away her tears with her little hands. She sobbed, "Grandpa, I don't want to leave you, but if we don't go in, those bad things will harm even more people." Looking at the old man in the gray robe, who looked weak, she felt as if her heart was being cut by a knife. She then turned to look at the forbidden area shrouded in mist, her small body appearing utterly helpless in the face of this difficult choice.
The gray-robed old man struggled to sit up, wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, and said in a hoarse but firm voice, "Children, don't worry about me. You all go in quickly. This matter of the evil spirit concerns the lives of all people. We can't let my old bones delay it. My black-robed brother and I can hold on for a while longer. You go and find the source of your destiny. Don't hesitate."
The old man in black robes nodded slightly. Although his face was as pale as paper, his eyes still held an undeniable determination: "Yes, time is of the essence. That evil spirit may regain its power at any moment. If we try to stop it now, it will be too late. We will do our best to hold it off. You must be careful once you go in."
Huanmo took a deep breath, as if she had finally made up her mind. A resolute look flashed in her eyes: "Alright, then let's go in. Seniors, please take care. We will find the Source of Destiny as soon as possible, destroy that evil spirit, and then come back to join you." After saying that, she took the lead and walked into the mist, each step filled with unwavering courage.
Wanru and Ling'er followed suit. The woman in white glanced at the two injured old men, bowed slightly, and then quickly stepped into the mist while carrying her guqin.
The moment they stepped into the forbidden area, a putrid and chilling stench assaulted their nostrils, almost making them nauseous. The surrounding environment was even more eerie and terrifying. Underfoot was a rugged stone path covered in moss and an unknown slime, making it easy to slip and fall. On both sides of the path were strangely shaped rocks, which seemed to possess a life of their own, exuding an eerie aura. Some resembled grotesque faces, others twisted limbs, as if silently proclaiming the dangers of this forbidden area.
Huanmo walked cautiously, observing her surroundings warily, silently thinking, "This forbidden area is indeed fraught with danger. I must be on my guard and not make any mistakes here." The sword in her hand always maintained a faint glow of spiritual energy, illuminating a small area ahead. That faint light seemed so insignificant in the endless darkness, yet it was the only thing they could rely on at this moment.
Wanru followed closely behind Huanmo, playing her jade flute. The melodies echoed through the silent forbidden area, as if both bolstering her courage and testing the surroundings for any hidden dangers. "This place is eerily quiet. Who knows when a deadly trap might appear? I have to be careful," he muttered to himself, sweat beading on his forehead, which he didn't bother to wipe away.
Ling'er clutched the book tightly, her big eyes filled with terror, but she still tried her best not to fall behind, chanting incantations softly. The golden light on the book flickered faintly, as if it were fighting against the darkness and evil forces around her.
The woman in white walked at the back, her fingers lightly resting on the strings of the guqin, ready to play and respond to any unexpected situation. Looking at the resolute yet somewhat tense figures ahead of her, she thought to herself, "They are young, yet they have such courage. I only hope that we can find the source of our destiny and end this crisis as soon as possible."
As they walked, a fork in the road suddenly appeared ahead. One road led to the left, shrouded in thick black fog, from which strange roars seemed to faintly emanate; the other road led to the right, flickering with a ghostly green light, but that light felt even more sinister, as if countless eyes were hidden within it.
Everyone stopped abruptly, exchanging bewildered glances, unsure which path to take. Huanmo frowned, pondering, "Both paths seem extremely dangerous, but which one truly leads to the source of our destiny? Choosing the wrong one could have unimaginable consequences."
Wanru looked at the two paths with a blank expression. She scratched her head and said, "This is difficult. I have no clue what to do. How should I choose?"
Ling'er opened her eyes wide, trying to find clues in the scroll, but after flipping through it for a long time, she couldn't find any useful information. She said anxiously, "What should I do? It's not written here."
The woman in white frowned slightly, gently plucked the strings of her zither, and sensed the surrounding spiritual energy fluctuations, but still couldn't determine which path was the right one.
As everyone hesitated, ancient runes slowly emerged from the ground in the middle of the fork in the road. The runes flickered with an eerie light, seemingly conveying some message, but no one could decipher them. What did they mean? Were they guiding the way, or another deadly trap? Standing at the crossroads, everyone was plunged into deeper confusion and uncertainty…
