Rebirth in Another World: The Ultimate Legend
Chapter 264 Ominous Signs
Back in the city, Lin Yu and Su Yao, disregarding their exhaustion, immediately recounted everything they had seen and heard in the old house, including the thrilling battle, to the prefect and the eagerly awaiting populace. The prefect listened with a furrowed brow, his hands clasped behind his back, pacing back and forth in the main hall, his face filled with worry. The populace gathered around, whispering amongst themselves and occasionally letting out gasps of amazement. When they heard how the two had fought side-by-side in that desperate situation and ultimately defeated the monster leader, the crowd showered them with praise, their exclamations and cheers echoing like waves throughout the city's streets and alleys.
"Lin Yu, thanks to you and Su Yao, our town escaped a disaster. Truly, heroes emerge from among the young!" An elderly man with gray hair, leaning on a cane, walked forward shakily, his eyes full of gratitude and admiration.
"Yes, if it weren't for the two of you, we don't know what kind of disaster we would have suffered. If you need anything in the future, just ask!" The prefect also stopped and said solemnly.
Lin Yu and Su Yao responded modestly to everyone's praise, but they knew in their hearts that this crisis might only be the beginning. After a few days of rest, nourished by warm blankets and plenty of food, their wounds gradually healed and their strength slowly returned. They originally thought they could live a peaceful life and temporarily put that nightmarish experience behind them.
One night, in the stillness of the night, Lin Yu was suddenly awakened by a strange sensation. He opened his eyes abruptly, feeling a chill rise up his spine, his heart pounding inexplicably. He quietly got up, the blanket slipping off his body to reveal his muscular chest; the night's chill made him shiver slightly. He quietly walked to the window, opened it, and looked up at the night sky. He saw a star, shimmering with an eerie light, streak across the horizon, trailing a long tail, like an ominous crack piercing the tranquility of the night. The light was chillingly red, like blood flowing in the darkness, or the eyes of a demon peering into the human world.
"What kind of omen is this?" A sense of unease welled up in Lin Yu's heart, and he muttered to himself, his brows furrowing tightly into a "川" shape. He stood by the window, gazing at the night sky for a long time, until the light of the eerie stars completely disappeared and a chill permeated his entire body. Only then did he slowly close the window, lie back in bed, but toss and turn, unable to fall asleep.
The next morning, a mysterious visitor arrived in the city. He was dressed in a black robe, the wide hem of which fluttered in the wind, like a ghost in the night sky. His steps were steady, yet he exuded an air of mystery. His face was obscured by the shadow of his low-hanging hood, making it impossible to see his true features, except for his pointed chin, which gleamed coldly in the morning light.
"Are Lin Yu and Su Yao here?" The black-robed man's voice was deep, as if it came from the deepest hell, echoing in the silent street and attracting the attention of passersby.
Lin Yu and Su Yao rushed over upon hearing the commotion. Upon seeing the man in black, they stopped abruptly, their eyes fixed on him warily. Lin Yu instinctively placed his hand on the hilt of his sword at his waist, slightly turning to shield Su Yao behind him; Su Yao also gripped her staff tightly, her eyes filled with vigilance.
"Who are you? What do you want with us?" Lin Yu asked loudly, his voice accusatory, breaking the morning's tranquility.
The man in black robes sneered, his laughter particularly jarring in the empty street, as if mocking their wary demeanor. "The trouble you've caused is no small matter; the monster in that old house is just the tip of the iceberg." He spoke slowly, his voice low and hoarse, each word like a heavy hammer blow striking Lin Yu and Su Yao's hearts.
Su Yao frowned and asked, "What exactly are you trying to say?" She took a step forward and stood shoulder to shoulder with Lin Yu, her eyes filled with a stubborn refusal to back down.
The man in black robes spoke slowly: “In the distant, dark lands, an evil force is awakening, and those monsters are its vanguard. Your battle is just the beginning.” He raised his head, the shadow beneath his hood swaying slightly, revealing a pair of deep, mysterious eyes that gleamed with an all-knowing light.
Lin Yu's eyes were firm: "No matter how great the difficulties, we will not back down." He straightened his back, and the veins on his hand gripping the sword hilt bulged, as if he were declaring his determination to the man in black robes.
The man in black robes nodded slightly, seemingly quite satisfied with Lin Yu's answer: "Very good, then come with me to find a way to fight against this evil force." With that, he turned around, the hem of his robe fluttering, and walked towards the city gate.
Lin Yu and Su Yao exchanged a glance and saw the same determination and courage in each other's eyes. Without hesitation, they decided to follow the man in black robes to find out what was going on.
They journeyed onward, traversing a dense forest where towering trees, their branches and leaves so thick that sunlight filtered through only dappled patterns, like twinkling stars. The fallen leaves piled high beneath their feet, rustling softly as they crunched, like the whispers of countless hidden creatures. Occasionally, a few startled birds would flutter into flight, breaking the brief tranquility. Emerging from the forest, they traversed several treacherous peaks, steep and jagged, requiring them to use both hands and feet to climb, knowing that a single misstep could send them plummeting into the abyss. After this arduous journey, they finally arrived at a mysterious valley. Surrounded by mountains and shrouded in mist, the valley resembled a secluded paradise, yet exuded an air of mystery. At the valley's entrance stood a massive stone tablet, inscribed with ancient and enigmatic symbols, seemingly telling a long-forgotten story, or perhaps warning of danger to those who came before…
