Rebirth in Another World: The Ultimate Legend

Chapter 263 Fierce Battle in the Old House (Part 2)

Lin Yu and Su Yao, their bodies utterly exhausted and nearly collapsed, struggled to their feet, their hands bracing the ground. Their legs felt like lead, each effort sending shivers of pain through their muscles. Yet, their eyes remained resolute, their weapons gripped tightly as if they were their only lifeline. Lin Yu's longsword, its blade stained with blood and nicked, still gleamed coldly in the dim light, a testament to the harrowing battle that had just transpired; the gem at the tip of Su Yao's staff, though dimmed, stubbornly shone with a faint light, as if gathering its last strength.

They cautiously moved step by step toward the direction from which the sound came, each step taken with extreme care, as if the ground beneath their feet might crack open at any moment and swallow them whole. The darkness deep within the ancient house was like an endless abyss, so thick and impenetrable that it seemed to possess a tangible quality, capable of devouring all light, hope, and courage. The cold wind howled and whistled through the ruins of the ancient house, creating a sound like ghostly wails, further enhancing the eerie and terrifying atmosphere.

Suddenly, a colossal figure, accompanied by a thick, pungent stench, burst forth from the darkness like a ghost. It was a gigantic monster, larger than two people tall, its appearance strikingly similar to the leader of the smaller monsters they had encountered earlier. Its black fur stood on end like steel needles, and its muscles bulged taut beneath its skin, displaying immense explosive power. But the aura emanating from it was far more powerful and malevolent, almost tangible, washing over them and nearly suffocating Lin Yu and Su Yao, filling them with an intense sense of oppression.

"Watch out!" Lin Yu reacted swiftly, shouting as he pulled Su Yao behind him with all his might, then faced the monster leader without hesitation. He moved with agility, dodging the monster leader's massive claws. The claws whipped up a gust of wind, whistling past and uprooting a rotten wooden pillar, which crashed to the side. Taking advantage of the momentum, Lin Yu swung his sword at the monster's leg. The blade whistled through the air, striking the monster's calf with deadly force.

The monster, in pain, roared, its roar shaking the walls of the old house and sending dust flying into the air. Then, it spewed forth a stream of black flames, the flames emitting a pungent, acrid smell, and lunged at Lin Yu and Su Yao like a giant, menacing black python ready to devour its prey.

With lightning speed, Su Yao cast a spell. Her eyes were tightly closed, and she chanted incantations as her staff danced rapidly in her hand. In an instant, a crystal-clear, blue-glowing shield formed before them. Flames struck the shield, scattering brilliant sparks and illuminating the surroundings. Su Yao's face was pale, and large beads of sweat rolled down her forehead; clearly, maintaining the shield had drained her considerable energy.

"Lin Yu, I'll hold it off. You find an opportunity to attack!" Su Yao shouted, her voice weary but still firm and strong. Lin Yu responded, his movements as nimble as a ghost, circling to the monster's side, his eyes sharp as he carefully searched for its weaknesses.

Su Yao continuously unleashed spells, beams of light shooting from her staff, transforming into ropes to bind the monster leader's limbs, or into ice spikes to pierce its eyes, hindering its movements. The monster leader was utterly enraged; its blood-red eyes glared wide, abandoning its attack on Lin Yu, and instead lunged at Su Yao with all its might. It swung its claws, each swing leaving afterimages, determined to tear this human woman who had repeatedly provoked it to shreds.

In that critical moment, amidst the monster's frenzied attacks, Lin Yu discovered a weak point on the monster leader's back. It was a slightly lighter-colored, slightly raised area; as the monster moved violently, the surrounding scales would loosen slightly. Lin Yu had no time to think. He gathered all his strength, his legs slamming into the ground, leaping high into the air in a graceful arc. His longsword, like a dragon emerging from the sea, thrust straight towards that weak point.

The longsword pierced the target with pinpoint accuracy, and the monster leader let out a piercing scream that seemed to penetrate the soul and echoed above the old house. Its massive body swayed a few times before crashing to the ground. After struggling for a moment, it lay still, and the surrounding darkness gradually dissipated.

Lin Yu and Su Yao breathed a sigh of relief, their tense nerves finally relaxing. They slumped to the ground like rag dolls. "It's finally over," Lin Yu murmured, looking up at the dilapidated roof of the old house, his voice filled with the relief of surviving a close call. "Yes, I hope nothing like this ever happens again," Su Yao echoed, her gaze fixed on the distance, silently praying that the town would return to its former peace.

They rested for a while, then helped each other to their feet and, with heavy steps, slowly left the old house. They remained silent the entire way, lost in memories of the life-or-death battle they had just fought. Back in the city, the streets and alleys were still deserted, exuding a suffocating atmosphere, as if the shadow of that disaster had not yet dissipated.

Unbeknownst to them, after they left, a mysterious light flashed through the old house, like a shooting star streaking across the darkness, disappearing in an instant. Immediately afterwards, a faint figure slowly emerged from the depths of the old house. Its face was obscured, only a pair of eerie green eyes gleamed in the darkness, staring intently in the direction they had departed, as if plotting something, or perhaps waiting for the next opportunity…
