—Excerpt from the Reindeer Clan Priestly Prayer Ritual, "The Canopy of the Forest"
I don't know when it started, but the false glory began to be built.
The people worshipped the golden deer antlers as a blessing from the gods, believing that the deer god was guiding this nearly extinct people back to prosperity.
Is it really?
When our children and the elderly are attacked by wild animals, it is the cavalry who drive away the threats and protect the daily lives of our people.
When foreign invaders attacked, our army swept across the land, defeating the enemy decisively.
But this time, I saw the end.
Seeing the tyrant and the last royal descendant, blinded by hatred, pushing the Deer Clan towards the abyss of collapse...
Without Mavia Brigitte, without the wise men of antiquity, this was a war destined to fail.
Or rather, the deer tribe has fallen, and the situation is irreversible.
Senior, do you think so too?
……
Shenzhen is located near the sea.
Naling dodged the impact of the ship's cannon fire, made her way through the white, broken waves rising from the sea, and threw Mus into the dark water.
The water's surface, covered by the fireball, shone with a desperate, dim light that penetrated its depths. Naling and Mus struggled, sinking deeper and deeper.
As nearby warships dropped depth charges one after another, shockwaves erupted from the sea. Giant bubbles rose rapidly, bursting into towering columns of water on the turbulent surface.
A few seconds later, Mus was the first to escape from the water. Soaked to the bone, he was clearly exhausted and tried to get back to shore in a disheveled state. But Naling wouldn't give him a chance to recover and gave chase.
"Is this the freedom you've been pursuing? Have they ever even given you the slightest approval?" Mus had barely finished speaking when he was blasted away by a stray missile. Naling then kicked him onto the deck of the aircraft carrier; there were even some fighter jets preparing for takeoff on the runway.
“Freedom is not a gift from anyone, but a right that is won.” Naling knew better than anyone that Mus wouldn't be persuaded, but she did it anyway. “Don't you understand, Mus—”
Even without weapons, Mus could still pose a considerable threat with his bare hands. He lunged forward, shoving Naling toward the tarmac behind him. The fighter jet, laden with airborne missiles, was torn in two and exploded on the deck.
Lying in the cabin, Su Luo felt the entire ship shaking from top to bottom, almost causing her to roll off the double bed.
“I taught you every move. Naling, you don’t have the ability to kill me!” Mus roared to bolster his courage as he leaped over the blazing, leaking fuel, only to fall right into her trap—Naling picked up a stray air-to-ground missile and hit him again with a standard baseball home run.
The close-range explosion blasted both of them far away. Na Ling steadied herself on the deck at the stern of the aircraft carrier, but Mus was nowhere to be seen.
Where have you been?
On the chaotic runway, several maintenance crew members peeked out from behind parts crates, staring fearfully at Naling. Several armed soldiers rushed out from the island superstructure, shouting at her.
She ignored them, instead closing her eyes and using her senses to detect every movement of the ship and even its hull...
Finally, the waves directly beneath the aircraft carrier surged with a deathly golden light, the energy flowing through the entire hull and burning a large hole straight through to the deck. Musk leaped to one side of the hole, climbed the elevator platform between the upper and lower levels, and rushed out at high speed. Unable to dodge in time, Naling fell into the hole and was captured by Musk.
His hands gripped Na Ling's throat tightly, lifting her up and pinning her against the wall. Na Ling kicked her legs, but she couldn't reach Mu Si's body and had to give up.
"Boom——"
As if Na Ling was destined not to perish here, the ship shuddered violently, and the lower compartments began to flood rapidly. The bow of the "Zhen Yue" rose high, creating huge waves that erected a steel tombstone on the sea.
"Oh no!" Na Ling exclaimed, "The ship is sinking!"
The steel plates beneath Mus's feet rumbled loudly. Transport machinery and cooling slag spilled from the bow, smashing everything to pieces. Enraged, Mus raised his voice. "This is your final lesson, Naling. You can't save anyone here!"
The deer general mocked the humans' pathetic weapons and kicked Naling hard, causing her to sink even deeper. Naling watched helplessly as Mus escaped, while she was tossed and turned in this cramped space...
"Hey! Can't you fly? Get out of here!" someone shouted at her from the corner of the cubicle. Na Ling grabbed the door frame and turned to look at her.
Clutching a fire extinguisher, Su Luo cowered behind the double bed, her glasses half-closed, making her look like they were about to shatter. She couldn't believe that this place, arguably the safest in the world, had taken her life so quickly.
Although the two were complete strangers, Na Ling already had a plan to escape in her mind.
"Hold on to me!"
She held out her hand.
......
city center.
The wooden floorboards beside her feet made a chilling cracking sound before collapsing again in a large chunk. Zhao Lin staggered and fell amidst the remaining half of the house's ruins.
A heavy chain bound her wrists. The blood that had just seeped from the wounds was quickly dried by the surrounding heat. The other end of the chain was tied to a golden antler that had been dragged out of the cave not long ago. Because the floor material could not withstand the intense heat, it finally succumbed to the weight and collapsed to the layer below.
Exhausted, Zhao Lin was helplessly dragged along by the chain, falling into the darkness below.
“No…I can’t…I can’t give up now…” Zhao Lin gritted her teeth. Just then, she heard Serafina’s footsteps searching for her from above. Zhao Lin held her breath and used her other hand to forcefully pull the barb embedded in her thigh. Then, with her last bit of strength, she grabbed the slipping golden antler and dragged it to her side.
"call……"
It was just... just a little bit short.
Although the outside environment was several times worse than before, Zhao Lin had no time to care about that. She slung the chain over her shoulder and dragged the golden antlers, inching her way toward the exit of the wreckage.
Zhao Lin knew that every second she delayed bought Sharp and the others a little more precious time. Even if it was just for one more minute...
Without warning, a wooden stick swept across from nowhere and struck Zhao Lin on the head. The blow was so powerful that it nearly knocked her unconscious. Her previously clear vision suddenly blurred, eventually losing focus entirely and freezing on the torrential rain.
"Ugh!"
Zhao Lin's body went limp, and she fell straight forward to the ground.
"..." All around was deathly silent, with only the sound of the rain echoing in the curtain of rain.
After a moment, footsteps approached from afar.
"Thud." A foot in a black leather boot landed on the ground in front of Zhao Lin. After standing quietly for a moment, the person stretched out their foot and turned Zhao Lin over so that her face was facing up.
When Zhao Lin's pale and terrified face was exposed to the air, she finally saw who was standing in front of her—none other than Xiao Ke, who had almost disappeared since she returned to Shenzhen!
Xiao Ke glanced at her coldly, her face expressionless, her eyes revealing an undisguised weariness.
"You?" Zhao Lin covered her head, her words trembling.
She didn't say anything, but instead untied the chains from Zhao Lin's hands and brought the golden antlers to her feet.
"Well done. It was worth it for me to carefully select you as my messenger." Thunder roared as she descended from the sky. Inadvertently, she shattered the stone pillars on either side, turning them into a pile of fine sand.
Xiao Ke dared not be negligent in the slightest, and immediately knelt down, respectfully placing the golden antlers in front of the Queen, and even giving her a perfectly standard deer tribe greeting.
"I instructed you to keep an eye on An Han. Has she boarded a plane and left this place?" Serafina picked up the golden antlers, but her gaze never left Xiao Ke. She stepped over Zhao Lin as if she were stepping on a lifeless corpse, not a living person.
"Reporting to you, sir, just as you predicted, An Han did not leave, nor did she even have such a thought," Xiao Ke replied humbly.
Watching the two converse so smoothly and naturally, Zhao Lin suddenly realized something. Both she and An Han had likely long ago become playthings manipulated at will by Serafina. But when exactly had all of this quietly begun?
“It’s about time. It’s time for it to clear the way for the new dynasty—” Serafina grabbed Zhao Lin and roughly threw her onto the asphalt road.
"I will not yield to you..." Zhao Lin struggled to her feet, facing the beams of light emanating from the golden antlers without the slightest fear. The torrential rain soaked her hair, making her tiny figure almost disappear into the rain.
Blue light pierced the end of the block, and schools of fish, mirrored in the light, rose from the ground.
The crack sped along the long road to Serafina and Zhao Lin's feet. Somehow, the rain that had been falling on them gradually condensed into small clumps, pattering against the ground.
On the unnoticed steel beam, water droplets turned into ice crystals, sprouting dangerous barbs...
