Chapter 4 Peasants
Reed continued walking forward, carrying the rabbit in one hand, after what had just happened...
Reed also lowered his guard; after all, could any wild beast possibly be stronger than an Abnormal being?
So Reed reverted to his usual lazy self.
Five minutes later...
Reed had been walking in this forest for so long and was getting a little tired of it.
Reed suddenly felt that something had changed ahead.
Reed looked at the ground in the distance with a hint of happiness. The ground, which had been covered with weeds, had turned into mud, like a path, and had obviously been cleared.
The dirt road was overgrown with weeds, and next to the weeds stood a wooden sign.
Reed walked up and looked at the sign, wondering what it said.
[Ahead: Greenwood Forest]
Red pondered, "The 'Green Wood Forest' on the sign must refer to the forest behind me, right?"
If you continue walking forward, you're very likely to encounter people.
Reed grabbed the rabbit and ran off quickly; Reed was very fast.
After running for about two minutes, the number of trees around me gradually decreased.
In the end, Red ran out of Greenwood Forest, and the trees on either side were gone.
Instead, there were vast fields of golden wheat, with expanses of wheat on both sides of the dirt road.
The wheat is ripe, and scarecrows are planted in the middle of each wheat field.
Reed walked in the middle of the dirt road, looking left and right at the vast wheat fields.
The golden wheat fields, bathed in the afternoon sun, shone even brighter.
The setting sun cast a warm, orange-yellow light on the wheat field, adding to its beauty.
"Wow, what are these tall, golden grasses?"
Although Reed was curious, he still had to keep going.
As Reed walked, he admired the beautiful wheat fields around him. After a while, the wheat fields disappeared.
Instead, they grew fruits and vegetables, but there was no one in the fields or wheat fields.
Reed looked at the crops he had never seen before with some curiosity.
"Is this a carrot? I found it in the trash can."
"So that's how the corn in the company cafeteria grows!"
"What is that purple thing hanging on the vine?"
Red looked around at the crops with childlike wonder; these things were very new and fascinating to him.
Reed smiled with satisfaction as he looked at the crops; this place was much better than his urban nest.
Compared to this place, the city is like hell and heaven.
Looking at the crops around him, Reed had a sudden urge to go down and grab one to gnaw on.
Reed shook his head and gave up; after all, he still needed to find someone.
And they've already set behind the mountains, so it's probably getting dark soon.
We need to find a place to stay.
Reed continued on his way along the dirt path.
After walking for a while, Reed squinted and looked into the distance, where he saw a figure.
Reed was somewhat happy; he had finally found someone.
A person in the distance, wearing a vest and with their trousers rolled up, is carrying a basket of corn in both hands.
The man loaded a basket of corn onto a wooden cart, the cart's rope tethering a black ox.
The man took off his straw hat and fanned himself.
The man appeared to be a farmer, dressed in simple, unpretentious clothing.
The farmer looked to be about 40 years old, a middle-aged man, looking at the last basket of corn he had just finished carrying.
"I'll sell this corn in town today and then buy Nuo'er a fish to eat!"
"I'll choose an ear of corn for Noel; it'll be perfect for making a soup."
After muttering to himself, the farmer smiled憨厚ly, took the cow's rope, and prepared to leave.
The farmer was leading his ox along when he suddenly sensed something behind him.
I turned around and was startled. I saw a man in a suit running towards me at an astonishing speed.
This speed is not normal! It's faster than a horse!
The honest farmer was startled. Who wouldn't be frightened if a person who ran incredibly fast was running towards him?
The farmer hurriedly grabbed a whip and urged the oxen to speed up.
Upon seeing this, Reed hurriedly shouted, "I mean no harm! Don't go! I just came to ask for directions!"
Upon hearing this, the farmer put down his whip and cautiously turned around to look.
He realized that Reed was already two meters away.
Reed slowed his pace, walking forward at a normal speed.
"Hello, my name is Reed. I got lost in the Greenwood Forest, and by the time I came out, the sun had already set."
The farmer raised an eyebrow at Reed's attire; he was dressed in a suit without a speck of dirt, and his trousers and shoes were unlike anything he had ever seen before.
But it looked very high-end, and a thought popped into the farmer's mind: Could the other party be a nobleman?
The farmer finally lowered his guard and said in a somewhat ingratiating tone...
"Sir! You must be a nobleman? I'm so sorry I didn't greet you right away."
A question mark appeared above Reed's head. How did he suddenly become a nobleman? And you're 40 years old, calling me "sir"? Isn't my rank a bit too high?
But this conveniently saves him the effort of creating his own identity. Reed coughed, covering his mouth.
Then he hid the dead rabbit behind his back with his other hand. Luckily, the farmer didn't see the dead rabbit in his hand.
The farmer in front of me thought he was an aristocrat, so I had to pretend to be one.
Furthermore, the farmer didn't seem to suspect anything by running over and loudly calling out to the other person to wait, because a nobleman wouldn't have done that at all.
Reed put one hand behind his back and said, "Stop talking nonsense, I'm asking you! Where's the accommodation?"
The farmer, who had been about to continue flattering him, shut his mouth, gave an awkward laugh, and said, "Sir! If you need an inn, you'll have to go to a small town some distance away."
Reed frowned immediately. "Anywhere I can stay will do."
The farmer smiled and nodded. "If you don't mind, you can stay in my village for the night!"
Reed nodded and didn't make things difficult for the other party.
Upon seeing this, the farmer could only smile apologetically and lead the ox, saying, "Sir, why don't you ride in the cart?"
Reed's mind raced; he needed to use this opportunity to make the other person feel more like an aristocrat.
"Don't you want to live? You want me to ride in this filthy vehicle? If my companion and I hadn't gotten lost, would I be looking for a lowly commoner like you?"
"Asking you for directions is the greatest blessing of your life! Quickly lead the way!"
Red used all his acting skills to portray disdain and anger.
Upon hearing this, the farmer immediately cowered, hastily apologizing and even kneeling down to slap himself.
Reid was also a little shocked to see this scene. Are the nobles in this world really that terrifying?
But he couldn't stop it, because doing so would diminish his authority.
After seeing that the other party had slapped him enough, Reed simply waved his hand, indicating that they should hurry on their way.
The farmer then thanked him profusely, as if he had won the lottery.
Leading the way with the ox by the hand, Rhett followed behind the farmer.
After the farmers turned several corners, Red finally saw the village.
The village name [Hengshui Village] is displayed outside the village gate.
Some children were playing outside the door. The children were playing in the middle, while their mothers sat and chatted against a large tree nearby.
A child smiled as he saw a farmer leading his cow home.
"Uncle Zhuang, you're back!"
The child shouted, and then the other children, seeing this, came laughing and approaching the farmer.
The farmer touched the child who came over with one hand.
"You're still playing around here! Go home and eat, you bunch of little brats!"
After the farmer finished speaking, he got onto his wooden cart, took out a few ears of corn, and gave one to each of the children.
The mother of the child, who was chatting under the tree nearby, came over.
"It's an aphrodisiac! Bring the corn back in!"
"What does this mean? They're giving us corn again, hahaha!"
"You should take this corn, it's supposed to be good for male enhancement, and sell it for money. Who gives away corn like that?"
The women came over to return the corn.
The farmer refused with both hands, a simple smile on his face, "Take it to make soup for the children. Who gave it to you? It's for the children!"
After listening, the women handed the corn back to the children and waved their thanks.
Reed watched from behind and smiled with satisfaction.
After the farmer greeted them, the children went back to playing.
The farmer turned to Reid and apologized, "I'm sorry to have kept you so long!"
Reed shook his head and said, "It's okay."
The farmer thanked him again and continued leading the black ox into the village.
The women sitting under the tree also noticed a young man behind the farmer, who was whispering among themselves.
Reed heard it but pretended not to.
Red turned to look at the group of children and saw one of the boys looking at him.
Reid glanced around, the women turned and whispered among themselves, and the farmer led the way.
Reed waved his hand, beckoning the little boy to come over.
The little boy saw it and ran over.
Red took the dead rabbit he had hidden on his person and handed it to the little boy.
"Here, have this rabbit, but don't tell your mom yet."
"Take it to your mother after I leave."
After saying that, Reed turned and left without looking back.
The little boy held the rabbit in both hands, wanting to ask why.
But Reed walked away.
Reed caught up with the farmers again and entered the village. He glanced at the little boy and sighed.
I've never tried it before, so I'll let him have it.
