Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 53 The Mysterious Study
As a naming genius, Lanny naturally had no idea what was happening in front of the castle square.
Because of his bizarre name, Tim thought it was childish and forbade everyone to discuss it or inquire about its origin. However, things took an unexpected and bizarre turn...
"Hey, do you think the name 'Three Axes' is real? I think it's probably just a name the master made up to add mystery!" Old Joe, like his name, was relatively steady and mature, but he couldn't help being curious and joined the discussion.
"Have you heard? The origin of those three axes is shrouded in mystery. To avoid being discovered, even the master dared not reveal their names directly..."
When the story reached Gavin, it became much more interesting and complicated.
"I heard that this spear technique was obtained by the master from a mysterious place in Falling Dragon Ridge. It comes from an ancient dragon clan, and you can't even mention its name, or the dragons will sense it!"
"These tactics combine the agility of a snake, the ferocity of a tiger, and the majesty of a dragon. I've heard that when used on the battlefield, even knights are inevitably shaken and their fighting power reduced."
"That's why the master requires that only those who meet the standards can learn it. Those whose bodies don't meet the standards will have all their energy drained away and turn into dried corpses!"
"What? What? Why do you think they're from the dragon race? Don't you know?" Every time someone asked him this, he would look at them in astonishment, as if they were an idiot who had asked an extremely stupid question.
Only when the other person began to doubt whether he had really made a fool of himself did his expression change, and he said mysteriously, "Didn't you notice? Lord Tim shouted 'Dragon' during his practice? That's a spell, he's borrowing power from a dragon. How do I know? I was right next to him, and I felt the dragon's aura!"
"Don't believe me? Go ask Captain Aaron. He was right next to me at the time. See if he felt it too!"
…
Lanny was unaware of the rumors circulating in the guard camp. After all, he didn't go there every day; he went more frequently at first, but later, as he got busier, he only went every few days.
He is not in the camp now, but in the workshop in the backyard.
Standing nearby were Iron Hammer, Jimmy, and their two apprentices. In front of them were three crucibles, and the group was examining them closely.
"None of the three are cracked?" Lanny squatted down and examined them roughly. Sure enough, he found no cracks. Then he straightened up and looked at Iron Hammer with a smile on his face.
"Yes, sir, none of these three crucibles have cracked. I've been firing them since this morning, and they're still perfectly intact." Iron Hammer rubbed his hands together excitedly, his mouth stretching to his ears.
The master had entrusted him with this task some time ago. He kept sending Zach to different places to dig up soil of different textures and colors, and then bring it to the workshop to make fist-sized crucibles, which were then repeatedly calcined in an attempt to find materials that met Lanny's requirements.
By now, the workshop had accumulated a huge pile of waste materials. Today, they finally found materials that met the young master's requirements and made these three crucibles, which naturally made him very happy.
After praising Hammer a few times, Lanny crouched down again, ignoring the high temperature emanating from the crucible, and leaned closer to examine it carefully once more.
Judging from their appearance, all three crucibles withstood the high temperature and had almost no cracks on their surfaces. Although the furnace temperature is currently only around 1,000 degrees Celsius, this is the best result so far.
With the crucible, all that's needed now is to keep increasing the temperature at the center of the furnace to melt the iron and start making ironware from molds. This will greatly improve efficiency and allow for the creation of ironware with complex shapes, enabling Lanny to realize some of his ideas.
In addition, it seems that once the temperature rises, it's possible to start working on glass?
Standing up, Lanny excitedly pumped his fist. "Iron Hammer, you've done a great job! Tell me, how did you manage to do it?"
Hammer, however, hesitated and said that it wasn't his doing, but Cody's.
Huh? Isn't your apprentice Zack? How did he get involved with Cody? Did I remember wrong?
He glanced at Cody with a puzzled look, but didn't say anything. Instead, he looked at Hammer, wondering why he would say that.
Iron Hammer was also embarrassed. He and his apprentice had worked hard for a long time, only to have the problem solved by Jimmy's wooden apprentice in a few words, making him feel ashamed.
However, being an honest man, he didn't think about embezzling the credit, but instead explained the reasons in detail.
It turns out that during this time, Zack had been working very hard, searching for soil of various colors or textures in the back mountains every day, even reaching as far as the Hekou Village area.
However, there were no obvious results. Some cracked as soon as they went into the furnace, while others could hold out for a while but would slowly crack as well. Some even cracked with a snap shortly after being taken out, making the hammer wish it were cracking its own head instead.
Just when the two were at a loss and didn't know what to do, Cody came over and gave them an idea.
"Why not mix these soils together? I think it might work!"
They were skeptical, but since the materials were readily available, they figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. Little did they expect that this attempt would actually bring them such a pleasant surprise.
They found that some soils, after being mixed together, showed a significant improvement in temperature resistance. Of course, some also showed a reduction in premature cracking or deformation; it wasn't all good news.
Seeing a glimmer of hope for success, the two experimented even more diligently. After repeated attempts, combining different materials in different proportions, they finally discovered that mixing a type of yellow clay from the back mountain with black clay from Hekou Village could withstand prolonged exposure to the heat of the furnace, and the clay would remain intact after being removed from the furnace.
This discovery thrilled them. The master and apprentice immediately made three crucibles of different sizes according to the dimensions given by Lanny. After firing them for half a day, they found that all three crucibles withstood the high temperature. Even after being taken out of the furnace and cooled for a period of time, they did not break.
That's why the two of them immediately sought out Lenny and told him the good news.
Wow, Cody's got some talent! He even has mixed-material thinking.
I glanced at Cody again, somewhat surprised. He smiled and remained calm and composed, neither interrupting nor boasting. I nodded to myself, thinking he seemed like a steady and reliable person.
"Haha, no matter whose idea it was, it was you who came up with it. You deserve the credit, not bad, not bad." He patted Hammer's sturdy shoulder. "Your monthly salary will double this month, and Zack's too!"
Upon hearing that his monthly salary would double, Tiechui, who was illiterate, couldn't calculate how much he should receive after the double, but he was still very happy and laughed heartily with his apprentice.
Cody immediately figured it out. Thinking about how much salary Hammer could get this month, and even Zach could get quite a lot, a look of envy finally appeared on his face.
Haha! I thought you wouldn't be tempted, but seeing Iron Hammer get rewarded, you finally couldn't resist?
Seeing Cody's slightly shifting expression, Lenny thought for a moment before speaking, "As for Cody..."
When Cody heard the master call his name, his eyes lit up, and a faint sense of anticipation rose in his heart.
Looking at Cody's youthful face, Lenny slowly said, "I want to give you a task. If you can successfully complete it, you will receive a reward of 10 silver coins."
"Of course, if you fail, you'll have nothing."
"Are you willing?"
Cody was taken aback, then overjoyed, and immediately shouted, "I do!"
With his intelligence, he certainly knew that this wasn't just a reward, but an opportunity, a test, given to him by Lord Lanny. It all depended on whether he could seize this opportunity.
"Hopefully this task won't be too difficult." Although his eyes were determined, he was still somewhat worried that the task might be too challenging. It wasn't that he was afraid of not getting the reward, but rather that he was worried about disappointing Lord Lanny.
For him, gaining Lord Lanny's favor was probably the biggest opportunity of his life, and he didn't want to lose it at all; he wanted to seize this opportunity.
"Cody, come to the study with me, I'll explain everything to you."
"Iron Hammer, you're here too!"
Lenny called over Hammer and Cody and headed to the study on the second floor, leaving behind only a grinning Zach and an envious Jimmy.
Come to the study
Iron Hammer seemed quite casual, and sat down on the opposite side of the desk without a second thought.
This wasn't his first time visiting the master's study. Lanny usually didn't have any aristocratic airs, and after spending time with him, he became more casual.
Cody, on the other hand, seemed a bit reserved, yet also very curious about the study, looking around curiously. There was only one chair opposite the desk, so he had nowhere to sit.
In Jimmy's description, Lanny's study was full of magic. From bellows, stoves, and patterned swords to ink lines, handsaws, and planers, almost all the design drawings came from this room. Before they were made, they were hidden in some mysterious corner of this study.
Jimmy even said that the master's study had a magical power, and that any problem could be solved there.
Otherwise, why would Lord Tim go to the study to see the master every few days?
He also heard that all the rules and regulations of the security detail, training manuals, and even the recently widely circulated "three-axe" secret all originated from this room.
Jimmy even felt that if someone told him that there was a dragon hidden in this study, he wouldn't be surprised, and would even find it somewhat reasonable.
Jimmy's description was certainly somewhat mythologized; he was simply trying to please his sister, and Cody would just smile and remain silent each time. But the room still inevitably sparked much curiosity and speculation.
Is this the master's magical study? I don't see anything special about it. It's not only lacking in splendor and grandeur, but it's also rather cramped and dilapidated.
If I had to point out an advantage, it would probably be the view. From the window, you can see the castle gate, the guard camp in front of the gate, and the village of Hexi further away very clearly.
