Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 54 Cody's Trial
After looking around the study and finding nothing particularly special, Cody calmed himself down and waited for his master to assign him a new task.
I wonder if they'll come up with something new this time? Cody suddenly felt a sense of anticipation as he watched Mr. Lanny rummaging through his desk drawer with his head down.
As expected, Lanny did not disappoint him. He quickly pulled out a few sheets of parchment from the drawer and placed them on the table.
"This is what I'm going to do next. Take a look. Take a look at these two hammers first, they're related to you. Cody, take a look at these first."
Cody wasn't surprised that there was a hammer involved. He had guessed it when the master called the hammer over; what they were going to do next was definitely related to the hammer, or at least partially.
He just wasn't quite sure what it was that required a carpenter's apprentice to collaborate with a blacksmith to complete.
He took what Lanny handed him and looked at it carefully. He found that it was a few drawings, on which a strange device was simply depicted in lines.
The main body of the device is circular, with a tubular object extending from below, and two strange crankshafts on the side, like a snail with ears twisted in opposite directions on both sides.
The following diagrams are clearly internal structural diagrams of the equipment. Although he had never seen such drawings before, he could clearly see that these diagrams depicted the internal structure of the machine from the side and front.
He immediately recognized that this drawing method was consistent with the bellows drawings he had previously encountered from his master—equally intuitive and clear. As long as the person making the bellows followed this method, it would be virtually impossible to make a mistake.
He was a little confused by the last one. Looking at the drawing, the device looked as if it had been cleaved open with a sharp sword, revealing the cut-out parts.
"Sir, what is this one?" Cody pointed to the last drawing, indicating that he didn't quite understand it.
"Oh, you understood the first few?" Lenny looked at the diagrams and realized that the other person was referring to cross-sectional views. He wasn't surprised that the other person didn't understand them. What he was more curious about was that Cody could understand the other few.
"Hmm, I think I understand. It should be the facade and side view of this device, right?"
Huh, you can actually understand these drawings?
Lanny asked curiously, "Have you seen this type of blueprint before?"
"Is this what you call a blueprint? I've seen some with my master, but I don't quite understand why this... blueprint, and which part is it drawn on? It looks like it's been split open by something?"
"Oh, what you're talking about? It's called a cross-sectional view. It mainly shows... ...this is where the gearbox is installed... ...this is the air inlet, and this is the air outlet..." Lanny smiled slightly, explaining the function of each component to the other party while also mentioning some of his design considerations.
At first, Cody simply listened, but soon he grasped the basic concepts and functions of the components. He was even able to occasionally speak up and express his opinions, and most of the time he was able to do so effectively, engaging in a back-and-forth discussion with Lanny.
Seeing the two of them having such a lively discussion, Iron Hammer was very envious and really wanted to join in.
But after listening for a while, he sadly realized that he couldn't understand most of what was being said, and this trend became more and more obvious as the discussion deepened.
The discussion between the two did not come to an end until much later, and Lanny actually felt quite satisfied.
It had been a long time since anyone had been able to have such a pleasant conversation with him. It must be said that Cody was a very quick-witted and intelligent person. Once you mentioned something, he could react very quickly, even if he had never seen or even heard of it.
This made Lanny very curious: would Cody give him a surprise?
Lanny glanced at Iron Hammer, who was sitting next to him looking rather bored, and realized that a lot of time had passed.
"Ahem..." After calming himself down, Lanny began to explain the objective of this mission.
"This time, I want to build a human-powered blower. The reason I asked you to come along is because the gears inside—yes, the ones you drew on the blueprints—need your help to build."
"Cody, you're in charge of the entire manufacturing process, including the production of each component, the standardization of dimensions, and supervision. I only have one requirement: get this thing built as quickly as possible, understand, Cody?"
Cody nodded without speaking, but he felt a little nervous and uncertain. Although he had just discussed it with Lanny for a long time, he was still worried about whether he could build it.
"Iron Hammer, you need to assist Cody with the manufacturing of iron parts. You need to fully cooperate with him on what dimensions and requirements he needs. This equipment is very important to us, do you understand?"
Iron Hammer is an honest man, and as long as things are explained to him clearly, Lanny believes there shouldn't be any situation where he outwardly complies but inwardly defies him.
But if we don't make it clear, things might get complicated. This guy doesn't have a very good temper, and when he gets anxious or angry, his first reaction is to take action.
Besides, how many blacksmiths have good tempers? Even the best temper will turn into a volatile one if they are constantly exposed to the scorching heat of the furnace.
"Don't worry, sir, I will definitely cooperate fully with Cody."
As expected, Hammer did not show any dissatisfaction and agreed immediately, showing no intention of disobeying. This reassured Lanny a lot.
"Alright, you can go ahead and get busy. Cody, you stay. We still need to discuss the gears in more detail..."
After Hammer left the study with his portion of the blueprints, Lanny first had Cody sit down opposite him before pushing the blueprints forward.
When Cody leaned closer to look at the blueprints on the table, Lenny said seriously, "When you manufacture these gears, you must strictly adhere to the dimensions, including the number of teeth. Not a single one more, not a single one less, understand?... ..."
Why go into such detail? Actually, Lanny didn't want to either. Although Cody showed great talent, someone who had never been brainwashed by large-scale industry would find it hard to understand the significance of size and standards to manufacturing.
The manual blower he drew was designed according to industrial design principles. If the dimensions are off, the installation may not be smooth, and it may even be difficult to put the internal parts in.
It was a long time before Cody returned to the workshop.
It wasn't until he got closer to the workshop that he suddenly started to worry. What if Jimmy didn't understand why he was suddenly being valued? Would he be jealous and reject him?
Although this brother-in-law was indeed good to him, and he and his sister were very satisfied with Jimmy, he had never been so highly regarded by Lord Lanny before.
"Master..." As soon as he entered the workshop, he cautiously approached Jimmy and called out "Master."
Jimmy, however, did not react immediately as before. Instead, he lay on the wooden stool and carefully scratched at a shield placed on it.
This is their task for the next two days. All the red-tasseled spears have already been delivered, and now the master has assigned them to make these wooden shields.
Jimmy's reaction made Cody's heart skip a beat, and he became even more submissive. Seeing that Jimmy had finished planing this side, he immediately handed over the carving knife to be used in the next step like a lackey.
Jimmy, his face cold, glanced at his apprentice who was all smiles and fawning. Suddenly, he stretched out his leg and lightly kicked the other man, a smile spreading across his face as he chuckled and scolded, "Get lost! You're such a petty brother-in-law. I'm overjoyed that you're valued by the master. Hahaha, I can finally give your sister an explanation. She always thought that having you learn carpentry from me was a dead end and wanted you to go to Elfen and try your luck."
"Oh brother-in-law, you scared me to death..." Cody patted his chest, looking like he had just escaped a disaster.
However, upon hearing Jimmy say that his sister wanted him to go to Elfen, he pursed his lips, looking quite disdainful.
"Elfen is too far away, and we don't have horses. It would take two or three days to get there. No way, no way."
Although Cody looked disgusted, Jimmy knew that going to Elfen was the goal that the little guy had been longing for for years.
But he and his sister were the only ones left at home. What would happen to his sister if he left? He couldn't bear to leave his sister, which is why he hadn't been able to go.
Therefore, Cora always felt that she was a burden to her younger brother and owed him something, and she always wanted to find him a stable job.
Later, when she got together with Jimmy, she did consider having her younger brother learn carpentry so that he would have a skill to make a living.
As for now, it seems this kid really doesn't want to go anymore.
When Iron Hammer came back, he was full of envy and told me that Cody and Lord Lanny were having a heated discussion, and Cody was put in charge of manufacturing the next thing called "Blower," and even Iron Hammer had to listen to his orders.
It would be a lie to say I wasn't envious. Jimmy had to work his hardest to establish himself in the castle and barely managed to catch Lord Lanny's eye. And I was lucky to have arrived earlier.
Cody has only been here a few days? And the master has already put him in charge of making things?
But then she thought again, something didn't seem right. He was her brother-in-law, why should she be jealous of him? If he got better, wouldn't her marriage to Cora be easier?
In short, my heart felt like a sauce shop had been overturned, with sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy flavors all rushing up at once, and I didn't know what it tasted like at all.
So when Cody came in, he gave him a half-hearted, cold look, as a small way of venting his bitterness.
"Alright, alright, don't get carried away. Since the master has entrusted you with this task, you have to do your best, understand?" Jimmy, acting like an experienced person, imparted his limited workplace experience.
"By the way," he had only been serious for two minutes when he reverted to his old ways and became somewhat unreliable.
"Does this count as your trial mission? I heard that all the knights have trial missions, does this count?"
I guess it counts as... right?
Cody was initially quite certain that this would be both a test and an opportunity.
Now, now that it has actually happened, he finds it hard to believe.
