Chapter 29 The Warrior's "Stand-Up" Journey
Today is the day the monsters will attack the city. The entire city is like a fully drawn bow, filled with a tense atmosphere. On the city walls, the soldiers stand tall and straight as pines, their gazes fixed resolutely on the distance, their serious expressions like inscriptions carved into stone statues, showing no sign of slackening. They know all too well that the monsters attacking this time are no ordinary ones.
Soon, several monsters slowly came into view. These monsters were twisted, their skin a deathly gray, covered in hard scales that gleamed with a chilling light. Their eyes, like burning embers, emitted a dark and malevolent red glow, as if they could see through everything. The monsters had enormous mouths, revealing rows of sharp fangs; saliva dripped from their fangs, corroding the ground with a hissing sound.
One of the larger monsters was particularly eye-catching. It stood nearly three meters tall, its muscles bulging, and with every movement, its armor-like scales trembled. Its limbs were thick and powerful, with sharp claws at the tips of its fingers, each as sharp as a dagger, capable of easily tearing through steel. Several sharp bone spurs grew from its back, trembling slightly with its movements, as if searching for the weakness of its prey.
On the city wall, the soldiers reacted swiftly, raising their shields to form a solid defensive line. Spears rained down, striking the monsters accurately and splattering blood. However, the monsters' scales were exceptionally tough, leaving only shallow marks on the spears. The monsters let out shrill screams, but they did not retreat; instead, they charged at the soldiers with even greater ferocity.
The kingdom's army and adventurers outside the city also sprang into action. The kingdom's archers drew their bows, arrows raining down on the monsters like meteors. However, the monsters reacted with incredible speed, twisting their bodies nimbly in the air to dodge the arrows. The adventurers rushed forward, engaging the monsters in fierce close combat. Longswords gleamed coldly, each swing claiming a monster's life; battle axes whistled through the air, cleaving monsters in two.
However, despite their valiant resistance, the number of monsters remained perplexingly small. Just as everyone was filled with doubt, intelligence arrived: the monster army had been largely wiped out by an unknown force. Upon hearing this news, everyone's tense mood instantly eased considerably.
The scattered monsters were easily wiped out by the crowd, appearing as insignificant as ants. With the last monster fallen, the city's crisis was completely averted. In an instant, the entire city erupted in cheers and jubilation, their faces beaming with joy. The city gates reopened, sunlight streamed in, and everything returned to normal.
Alpha and Allen finally breathed a sigh of relief; the fierce battle against the monster was finally over.
The three suddenly remembered that the merchant was still waiting for them in Elparan City. So they quickly set off back to Elparan. Wang Xiaoyi and Allen rode their loyal wolf companions, the wolves moving with agile strides, their hooves flying and kicking up clouds of dust. Alpha rode a giant bird, its wings spread like a cloud, each flap creating a gust of wind, carrying Alpha through the air.
When they arrived at the Adventurers' Guild, they learned some rather absurd news. Upon hearing that monsters were attacking the city, the merchant, without hesitation, paid extra to hire other adventurers to flee back to the village overnight. The three felt a wave of helplessness and frustration, which made them both angry and amused. The merchant's cowardice and selfishness left them feeling helpless.
"This is really enough, what a wasted trip," Wang Xiaoyi couldn't help but complain. "We rushed back as soon as the crisis was over to escort him."
"Forget it, since he's already run away, there's nothing we can do." Allen sighed. "We can only blame ourselves for being so foolish as to believe he would wait for us forever."
