Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad
Chapter 55 Showdown
Luo Feng invited Wu Muxiu into the house and poured her a cup of tea.
“These days, the people in the surrounding villages are all in a state of panic. Why did you come here, and all alone? Aren’t you afraid something might happen to you?” Luo Feng asked.
"I just wanted to come see you and talk to you," Wu Muxiu said in a barely audible voice.
"You've come all this way, but what did you bring? What's in the basket?" Luo Feng asked.
"I brought you some things." With that, Wu Muxiu placed the basket on the table and lifted the floral cloth covering it.
Luo Feng glanced into the basket and saw that it contained some rice cakes and a pair of cloth shoes.
The contents of the basket sent a chill down Luo Feng's spine; he couldn't just accept this. Otherwise, the relationship between the two of them would become completely complicated.
These two things are quite particular in rural areas. Rice cakes are a common pastry in rural areas, and whether someone can make good rice cakes is one of the criteria farmers use to choose a wife.
However, if this rice cake is sent by an unmarried girl, then there's something to say; the recipient must be the girl's sweetheart.
As for cloth shoes, their significance is self-evident.
Upon seeing these two items, Luo Feng couldn't sit still any longer. However, he didn't know how to refuse, after all, the girl meant well.
Gritting his teeth, Luo Feng decided to go all out. If this matter couldn't be clarified today, then something serious would definitely happen later.
"To be honest with you, I don't actually plan to find a wife. After all, my daughter is already four years old, and besides, I simply don't have time to think about these things right now." Luo Feng looked at Wu Muxiu earnestly and revealed his true thoughts.
“It’s okay, I don’t mind. If you don’t have time right now and don’t want to think about these things, I can wait until the day you’re willing to be with me,” Wu Muxiu said, shaking her head nonchalantly.
"I don't want to hold you back. You're a good girl, and you shouldn't waste your youth on me." Luo Feng gave her the "friend zone" card, which, in his view, was the most common way for girls in later generations to reject suitors.
"Is there something I did wrong? I can change it. Tell me." Hearing Luo Feng's words, Wu Muxiu was at a loss.
That's how rural girls are these days—kind, simple, and always thinking of others. Like Wu Muxiu, when she's rejected, her first thought is about what she did wrong, not about blaming the other person.
"No, you're very good, you really are a good girl, it's my fault for letting you down," Luo Feng said, emphasizing each word.
"Do you already have someone you like?" Wu Muxiu looked up at Luo Feng, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Yes, I already have someone I like." Although he knew that saying this would hurt Wu Muxiu, Luo Feng had no choice but to tell a white lie.
Sure enough, as soon as she said that, Wu Muxiu could no longer hold back and ran out the door in tears.
"I hope you can understand my predicament." Luo Feng muttered to himself as he watched Wu Muxiu's retreating figure.
"Brother Feng, what did you do to that girl? Why did she run out crying?" Almost as soon as Wu Muxiu left, Biaozi and his two friends appeared.
"Were you three hiding nearby watching the whole time?" Luo Feng kicked each of them in an annoyed tone.
The three of them accepted it with smiles, then waited for Luo Feng's reply with smug looks.
"Alright, stop looking at me like that, or I'll beat you up." Luo Feng felt annoyed by their expressions.
"Brother Feng, tell us about it," Biaozi said, leaning closer.
“That’s right, look at us, we’ve been perking up our ears for ages, we’re practically rabbits now,” Afu chimed in, and Baosheng nodded in agreement.
"I have absolutely no intention of finding a wife right now, but I can't hold a girl back either," Luo Feng bluntly told them his true feelings.
"And then you rejected the girl?" Biaozi asked.
"Something's not right. The girl was crying so hard. Brother Feng, what did you say to her?" Baosheng asked, stroking his chin with one hand.
"I told her I have someone I like and I can't be with her," Luo Feng confessed.
"Hey Feng, you're being way too direct. Couldn't you have been a little more tactful? After all, she's a girl." Biaozi couldn't quite accept it and scratched his head as he said to Luo Feng.
Baosheng and Afu, who were standing to the side, also looked helpless.
“What do you know? Sometimes the most direct and clumsy methods are the most effective,” Luo Feng said to the three of them.
"But your method is too stupid."
"Exactly, look how sad that girl is crying."
"Brother Feng, I'm not trying to be mean, but you went too far."
The three clearly disagreed with Luo Feng's words.
"That's amazing! And the best is yet to come." Luo Feng looked at the three people with disdain. They really were three bumpkins.
"What else are you planning to do?" Biaozi asked.
"What do I want to do? I want you to help me return these things she sent," Luo Feng said, pointing at Biaozi, while patting the basket on the table.
The three of them glanced into the basket and were immediately speechless at Luo Feng.
“Brother Feng, the fact that she sent you this means she’s already interested in you. It’s not really appropriate for you to keep doing this,” Biaozi said to Luo Feng with a serious expression.
“Exactly, this is so immoral. Aren’t you afraid of being gossiped about behind your back?” Afu also tried to persuade Luo Feng.
"Let me make this clear in advance, I definitely won't do this job for you. You can decide which of the two is more suitable and let them do it." After saying that, Baosheng turned around and ran out the door.
Baosheng seems to be a smart man; he knows how to protect himself.
The remaining two exchanged a glance and also wanted to run out the door, but Luo Feng was quick and grabbed Biaozi's arm first.
"Didn't I tell you to go and pay it back? Why are you running away?" Luo Feng said to Biaozi with a smile.
"Brother Feng, how can you still laugh? This is really despicable. I will not do it." Biaozi sternly rejected Luo Feng's request.
"If you don't want to do it, then I won't give you your living expenses this month," Luo Feng threatened.
"Aren't you making things difficult for me?!" Biaozi shouted at Luo Feng.
"Give me a straight answer, are you going to do it or not?" Luo Feng asked bluntly.
"I can do the work, but if anything goes wrong, it's all your responsibility." Left with no other choice, Biaozi had to agree to Luo Feng's request.
"Go ahead, come back soon, and I'll treat you to a drink when you get back." Luo Feng said, waving to Biao Zihui to indicate that he could leave now.
"Come on, still drinking? We're not even sure if we'll make it back alive," Biaozi said dejectedly.
"It's not that serious, don't scare yourself." With that, Luo Feng shoved the basket into Biaozi's hands and pushed him out the door.
