Rebirth of a Farmer's Dad

Chapter 43 Rural Life

After breakfast, Luo Feng wasn't in a hurry to go home. There was nothing urgent, and he didn't want to be impolite. Instead, Luo Feng chatted with Lao Shuan, naturally talking about everyday matters and things he'd seen in the small town. Gossip, you know, is something all Chinese people love.

When two grown men chat, the conversation inevitably drifts to women. This is a common problem among men; sometimes what starts as a simple chat can easily escalate into risqué jokes. Of course, rural areas were still quite conservative at that time, so such topics weren't discussed. At most, they'd praise whose wife was beautiful or capable.

"Brother Laoshuan, your wife is so capable, you're really lucky to have married her," Luo Feng said, giving a thumbs up.

"What's wrong? Missing a wife? Why don't you find one?" Old Shuan said smugly.

"My daughter is still too young, I'm afraid she'll be bullied," Luo Feng said, shaking his head.

"What does it matter? Just pick someone with a good heart. That's all." Old Shuan sniffed and said.

"Who would want a man like me, especially one with a daughter?" Luo Feng said, taking out a cigarette from his pocket and offering one to Lao Shuan.

"What's wrong with your conditions? You've built a house in the village, a grand one at that, and your business in F County is so successful. How could anyone look down on you?" Old Shuan said, taking a drag of his cigarette.

"Come on, I don't have time for this stuff. I'm busy right now," Luo Feng said, giving Lao Shuan a disgruntled look.

"What are you two talking about? Husband, don't you have to do some work?" Old Shuan's wife appeared behind them without them noticing.

"We didn't talk about anything, just chatting." For some reason, Lao Shuan always wilted when he was around his wife.

"Sister-in-law, Lao Shuan and I were just discussing it, and he said he wants to find another wife." After saying that, Luo Feng glanced at Lao Shuan, who was trembling beside him, and then ran away on his own.

"Fengzi, you're so mean! You're trying to kill me!" Old Shuan's indignant voice came from behind. But before Old Shuan could finish speaking, he let out a scream. Luo Feng turned around and saw his wife dragging him into the house by the ear.

Haha. Luo Feng couldn't help but laugh a few times. He had just tricked Lao Shuan, which made him feel good. Although he didn't know when he had developed this mischievous habit.

"He's probably been corrupted by the second brother and his gang," Luo Feng muttered to himself.

At that moment, the second son, who was delivering food, suddenly felt a chill down his spine and couldn't help but sneeze.

"I wonder which bastard is talking about me," the second brother muttered to himself, before continuing to deliver meals.

Luo Feng, on the other hand, naturally went home. After all, he had things to do and didn't have time to chat with her. The double harvest had just ended, and there was still a lot of work to be done in the fields. In those days, there were no mechanical devices available, so they could only rely on manpower.

Since he had nothing better to do, Luo Feng decided to lend a hand at Lao Shuan's house as a way of repaying a favor. But before that, he needed to change into some work clothes; he remembered he had a few old clothes at home.

After changing his clothes, Luo Feng took Xinghua to Old Shuan's field, where Old Shuan and his family of three were busy working.

"What are you doing here?" Old Shuan asked Luo Feng irritably. There were several scratch marks on his neck, indicating that he had just been scolded by his wife.

"Brother Lao Shuan, I was just kidding, don't take it so seriously. I was just helping out because you were so busy. I had nothing better to do anyway." Seeing his displeasure, Luo Feng quickly put on a smile and offered him a cigarette.

"Those who came to help, don't just stand there, come and work with us," Old Shuan said, taking a cigarette and tucking it behind his ear.

"How dare you talk like that? Do they owe you something?" Old Man Shuan's wife, who was standing nearby, couldn't stand it anymore and quickly stepped forward to scold him.

"It's nothing, we were just joking around. Besides, sister-in-law, you went too far. You should at least give your brother some face," Luo Feng said to his wife after looking at the scratches on Yan Laoshuan's neck.

"It's alright, this guy's skin is tough, this little injury won't hurt him," Old Man's wife said nonchalantly.

Next, Luo Feng joined the family of three in working. The work was simple: turning over the soil and removing the weeds. The three adults finished quickly, leaving nothing for Zhu Zi. Thus, Luo Feng sent Zhu Zi aside to play with Xing Hua, and Luo Feng took over his work.

Zhu Zi naturally had no objections to this arrangement. To be honest, he wished someone would do the work for him every day. After all, he was still just a child, and all he wanted to do was play. Of course, he had no idea that his simple wish was impossible to fulfill.

Old Shuan's family didn't have much land, less than five mu in total. A little over three mu were paddy fields, and less than two mu were dry land. With such a small amount of land, the three adults finished it in half a day.

With nothing to do in the afternoon, I decided to wander around the village, hoping to help out if I encountered anything I could. Living in the village isn't about leisure; my earlier talk of taking a break was just an excuse. Anyone who's lived in a mountain village for a long time knows that interpersonal relationships are extremely important here. Without them, it's difficult to survive in such an environment.

Repairing the shattered interpersonal relationships he had previously damaged was Luo Feng's true purpose for returning home. Everything else was secondary. Otherwise, why would he have chosen this time to come back? If he had waited a few months, until his daughter's winter break, he could have been more relaxed.

Naive Xinghua had no idea what her father was thinking. The thought of seeing her long-lost village friends made the little girl very happy. Didn't you see her sharing quite a bit of the delicious food she brought from the county town these past two days?

That's how kids are. If they're willing to share with you, it means they're in a good mood and trust you. Conversely, if they're not, then you should consider whether you and your child need to rebuild a relationship of mutual trust.

Luo Feng is doing quite well. Xinghua's trust in him has reached a blind level, even bordering on obsession. For a father, this is truly a very rewarding thing. As for the villagers, after so much effort, Luo Feng has noticed that their attitude towards him is gradually improving, and his previously strained interpersonal relationships are beginning to develop.

It seems all his hard work has paid off; his new persona is basically set. Luo Feng is naturally very satisfied. At least now, he'll have people backing him in village affairs, giving him more confidence. Besides, people from the countryside, no matter how they develop, will always remain connected to their village. With the support of his fellow villagers, his career is sure to reach new heights. The day he becomes a millionaire shouldn't be too far off.
