"What's the relationship between the people who chased you last night? Also, shouldn't you tell me your name?"
Jiang Jin leaned forward slightly, his body resting on the table: "Amamiya Jin, the ones chasing me are Sakurai's men."
Matsuda Jinpei remained silent, staring at Jiang Jin for a long while before asking, "Why are they chasing you for no reason? What did you do?"
“Officer, what else can a hitman like me do? But I can’t tell you that, or I’ll be dead if my boss finds out. You wouldn’t have the heart to let me die, would you?” Jiang Jin said, picking up his milk and drinking it as he spoke. “It’s getting late, Officer Matsuda, shouldn’t you be going to work?”
Matsuda Jinpei glared at Jiang Jin, then pushed open the door and stood up, saying, "When are you leaving?" Jiang Jin opened his eyes wide with a wronged expression, "Seriously? You're kicking me out like this? That's so heartless! I'm still injured."
"You look energetic and lively," Matsuda Jinpei sneered. "Since you're not leaving, stay in my house and recover from your injuries properly. Don't go out and get locked up; I won't care about you then."
"Don't worry, I won't cause Xiaozhen any trouble," Jiang Jin said with a grin.
Matsuda Jinpei glared at Jiang Jin: "Don't call me that." Then he turned and left the house without looking back.
Jiang Jin laughed heartily, finding Matsuda Jinpei quite amusing. But after laughing, he suddenly slapped his forehead: "Oh dear, I forgot to ask little Jinpei to make the call! Oh well, looks like I'll have to go out with my injury..."
Jiang Jin's phone had been lost somewhere during the ambush yesterday. He usually didn't carry his phone, which allowed him to contact his group members, when on missions, precisely to avoid this situation—after all, it was a unique time-traveling machine!
The higher-ups are still unaware of his predicament, so Jiang Jin naturally needs to spread the news as quickly as possible. The Sakurai Group ambushing him—offending the organization is a minor matter compared to his injury. Jiang Jin has always been vengeful "from morning till night," and if he doesn't instigate the organization to sabotage Sakurai in this matter, he'll be damned!
Meanwhile, Matsuda Jinpei, after leaving his house and arriving at the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division, immediately approached Takagi and Sato. Instead of directly mentioning the Sakurai Foundation, Matsuda Jinpei asked them to help investigate the armed men who had appeared near his house the previous night.
The case of Saburo Inoue has been solved from the higher-ups' perspective, so there's no point in the three of them continuing to pursue it. Since it's all related to the Sakurai Group, they might as well use the pretext of discovering a dangerous armed man to continue the investigation; perhaps they can find a new breakthrough.
"An armed man appeared near your house?" Sato Miwako asked in surprise. "Are you sure, Matsuda?"
“Of course. They seemed to be looking for someone at the time.” Matsuda Jinpei concealed the fact that Jiang Jin was being chased and only said, “However, it was too dark at the time, and I was worried that even if I called the police, they might not be able to catch them and it might even cause casualties, so after scaring them away, I planned to find you to investigate together the next day.”
“These people have guns, they are indeed very dangerous,” Takagi said without any doubt.
“Then let’s go now. Inoue’s case is now closed.” Sato Miwako’s words were tinged with disappointment and resentment when she mentioned Inoue Saburo’s case.
Jiang Jin's coat still had bloodstains on it, but fortunately it was black and a double-sided one that he had specially ordered. After turning it over, Jiang Jin put on his hat and slowly left Matsuda Jinpei's house.
He just wanted to find a place where he could make a phone call, preferably a public phone, where no one would be able to find his information.
Matsuda Jinpei took Sato Miwako and Takagi to his residence in Beika-cho 5-cho. After asking the surrounding residents and asking the nearby police station to retrieve the surveillance footage, the three confirmed that four suspicious armed men had indeed appeared the previous night, and that the surveillance cameras had captured their faces.
“We’ll go back and report to Inspector Megure then, but what about this person whose face we can’t see?” Sato Miwako pointed to the only person in the surveillance footage whose face was not clearly visible. The person was dressed in black, intentionally avoiding the surveillance, and it was also dark so that their appearance could not be confirmed.
Matsuda Jinpei guessed that this person was Jiang Jin, but he naturally couldn't expose him right now. He had a gut feeling that if he wanted to investigate the Sakurai Group, Amamiya was crucial in the shadows.
“It’s possible that this is the person they’re looking for. Once we catch these people, we can naturally find out who this person whose face we can’t see is,” Matsuda Jinpei said.
After the three left the police station, Sato Miwako wanted to investigate the area captured by the surveillance cameras again, but unexpectedly they ran into Conan, Ran and the three children of the Junior Detective League.
"Conan? What are you doing here?" Sato Miwako asked in surprise.
Conan first glanced at Matsuda Jinpei, since this police officer was acquainted with Mr. Amuro.
"We're here to investigate!" Genta couldn't help but boast to the adults about what he and his friends were going to do. "Our Junior Detective League has received a very important request!"
Takagi smiled and half-squatted down, resting her hands on her knees, and asked, "Oh? What kind of request is it?"
“A classmate from the next class said that he sees someone being kidnapped in the house across from his house every night.”
"And the kidnapped person will be beaten, so we came to investigate."
Kidnapping? Abuse?
Sato and Takagi exchanged a glance. They knew these children often encountered unusual things, sometimes involving important cases. So when they heard about kidnappings, the two of them always took it with a grain of salt before investigating.
This time is no different.
Furthermore, the kidnapping and abuse seemed to have been going on for some time, so the victim must be in great danger now. With these considerations in mind, the two discussed it with Matsuda Jinpei. They decided it was better to be safe than sorry, so the three of them decided to help Conan and his friends investigate this suspicious kidnapping case.
This time, however, no kidnapping occurred; it was all a misunderstanding. The figure the child saw supposedly being kidnapped at the neighbor's house was just a mannequin. The neighbor was a screenwriter who simply rehearsed his plays with the mannequin every night.
"Thankfully, it was just a misunderstanding." Sato Miwako breathed a sigh of relief. "Alright, now that the matter has been clarified, you three children should go home immediately and avoid this area for the foreseeable future."
Upon hearing this, Conan instinctively asked, "Why, Officer Sato? Is something wrong here?"
"Oh, it was Officer Matsuda who saw several men who appeared to be armed yesterday when he was leaving get off work. After investigating today, we've basically confirmed that the four suspects were in this area. Their motives are unclear. When we met you, we were just about to look around for any clues we might have missed before going back to report to Inspector Megure."
"Armed person!"
Several children, upon hearing Takagi's words, were not afraid at all; instead, they were excited and said, "Then let's help with the investigation too!"
After all, their previous case was just a misunderstanding, which wasn't very satisfying.
"Children shouldn't get involved in these kinds of things," Matsuda Jinpei said, frowning slightly.
"Officer Matsuda, we're not just ordinary kids, we're the Junior Detective League! Sometimes you adults can't find information, but we kids might be able to," Genta said with utmost confidence.
Sato and Takagi genuinely trusted these kids, or more accurately, they wanted to see what Conan could discover. After all, the kid always seemed to find new clues and different perspectives in every case.
Matsuda Jinpei had participated in one or two cases involving Conan and had indeed noticed something special about the boy. However…
He's just a child; he probably won't find out about Amamiya's affairs, right? Matsuda Jinpei thought to himself.
Seeing that Sato and Takagi did not refuse, he had no choice but to remind the children that if they found anything, they should tell them immediately and not disturb the scene.
Matsuda Jinpei led a few men to the street where he had spotted Jiang Jin the previous night to begin his investigation. However, he didn't notice Jiang Jin sauntering out from the corner at the end of the street. Upon catching sight of Matsuda Jinpei and his men standing at the end of the road, he was startled and quickly retreated.
"Why did he bring people here? What bad luck, and that Grim Reaper elementary school student is here too. Looks like we'll have to go back."
