Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 98 The Female Ghost of the Swamp
While the woman in black was packing her things, Henry signaled that it was safe and told Arthur and Lee Yi to come and clean up the battlefield. The main task was to collect the weapons and place them on the carriage with the Maxim gun; Henry planned to tow the Maxim gun back.
By the time everyone had finished packing, it was already dark.
Looking around at the muddy surroundings, there wasn't a good place to settle down.
"Arthur, Black (the woman in black), dare to have a thrilling adventure?"
Henry distributed some dry rations to everyone and looked at the Bluewater Swamp, which was gradually becoming eerie in the darkness, and said.
Bluewater Marsh, like a sinister Lemoine state cemetery, is the final resting place of countless soldiers from the Civil War. Since human settlement, countless people have been mercilessly swallowed by this swamp, forever trapped within its depths. In the pitch-black night, American alligators, more numerous than seaweed, lurk in the shadows with their scarlet eyes, ready to launch a deadly attack on any traveler, sending chills down one's spine.
If that were all, it wouldn't be so bad. The key is that this swamp is full of unknowns and mysteries. At night, the Blue Water Swamp is not only shrouded in thick fog, making it impossible to see the surrounding environment, but also often hears eerie crying sounds from all directions, as well as corpses that have been dissected or dumped on the roadside, which makes people feel terrified.
"What's there to be afraid of? Who's afraid of who?" The big, simple-minded guy said, showing no fear whatsoever.
In contrast to the clueless Arthur, the woman in black was not so calm. Although she had not lived here for long, she had obviously heard about the terrifying rumors in the neighborhood from the local residents and had been told not to go out at night. However, her strong will made her unable to back down.
"Let's go, I've never known what fear is."
Seeing the two men's confident and fearless demeanor, Henry smiled slightly, hoping they wouldn't be frightened later. He instructed Li Yi to drive the carriage carrying the Maxim, and the group slowly walked into the mist towards Lagras.
They hadn't gone far when the horses beneath them began to stir restlessly, neighing incessantly. Strange noises could also be faintly heard. Henry knew they were probably being watched by night stalkers and signaled for caution.
Of course, without him even reminding them, everyone was already on edge.
"There seems to be a woman... crying?" Arthur listened carefully for a while and then recognized another sound. His heart pounded. "Henry, what kind of place is this? This is so damn weird, in the middle of the night."
Henry didn't reply to Arthur, but instead took the golden M1899 into his hand and patted Arthur, gesturing for him to look up to the right front.
"Fuck! What's going on here!" A rotting corpse was hanging high in the tree ahead. Swarms of carrion-eating insects surrounded it, making the people holding lanterns feel extremely uncomfortable.
Perhaps because Henry's group was large and looked formidable, the night watchmen who were monitoring them did not appear. Only when they got closer to the source of the crying did they see clearly that a woman was kneeling in a clearing surrounded by trees and bushes a few dozen meters away. She was wearing a white robe, her hair was disheveled, and her hands covered her face. The eerie and miserable crying was coming from her mouth.
"It's such a familiar scene." Henry recalled the distant memory, and the chilling scene from back then now felt somewhat nostalgic.
"I'll go see what's going on." After realizing that the sound was coming from the source, Arthur wasn't so scared anymore; the unknown is the most terrifying thing.
"Okay, be careful. I have a feeling someone is watching us."
After signaling the others to be on guard, Arthur pulled out his cowboy revolver, held a lantern in one hand, and slowly approached the woman.
"Who's there? Come out now!"
"Is this some kind of prank? Answer me!"
No matter how Arthur called out, the woman in white remained unmoved, continuing to weep on her own.
"Hey, ma'am. What's wrong?"
"Stop crying, say something to me, damn it!"
As Arthur approached the woman, trying to see her face clearly, she pulled out a sharp knife and swiftly stabbed him in the waist. At the same time, several strangely dressed people wielding knives emerged from the surrounding bushes and surrounded him.
The change happened so fast that Arthur was a little caught off guard. Fortunately, he was still wearing the bulletproof vest Henry had given him, so he wasn't pierced.
This made Arthur feel a little embarrassed. He picked up his pistol and shot the woman on the head with a backhand motion, then quickly shot and killed the "people" who were surrounding him. Even though Henry had warned him, he still almost fell for it.
Looking at their shabby and filthy appearance, Arthur didn't even bother to search them. As for the woman, she seemed unable to speak; apart from crying, she didn't utter a single word. It seemed he couldn't get anything out of her, so he simply shot her back to her world.
"Henry, did you already know what was going on? Why didn't you come to help me? Were you just like Hosea, wanting to see me make a fool of myself!"
Arthur walked back, muttering to himself.
"They were nothing but a group of pitiful people poisoned by voodoo, becoming neither human nor ghost, hiding by day and active at night, often plotting to murder passing travelers in this area."
"You need my help for such a small matter? That's a huge underestimation of you, the top marksman in the West. Don't you think so? Besides, didn't we come here to experience the thrill?"
"It seems that...that makes sense...?" Arthur was a little suspicious, feeling that there was something strange about what was said, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it, so he stopped thinking about it.
"You're saying this kid's the best marksman in the West? Hey, kid, what's your reputation? Let's have a match." The beautiful woman in black, who had been quietly following along, suddenly spoke up. That damned competitive spirit.
"Don't worry, there will be other opportunities later. We're still in the territory of those perverted night owls. Let's find a place to spend the night first after we get out."
Henry quickly interrupted the two eager individuals. Perhaps because of the earlier incident, they no longer felt the tension they had before when looking at their surroundings. Although Henry could still vaguely sense someone watching them from a distance, they were too afraid to come out, and Henry didn't bother with them.
Aside from the occasional corpse and passing crocodiles, the rest of the journey was uneventful. The group arrived safely in Lagras and, with Henry's money, managed to get into the residents' houses, allowing the four of them to sleep comfortably for the night.
