Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 63 Hosea Matthews
The next day, when Dutch and Arthur woke up and came to the hall, Hosea and Henry had already been chatting by the fireplace for a while.
Although they had known of each other's existence for some time, this was the first time they had formally met. Henry held the wise old man in high regard.
In Henry's view, Hosea is a highly contradictory figure. On the one hand, he is a highly skilled conman; on the other hand, for his time, he possessed extremely high moral standards and a wisdom about life that surpassed that of his gang. Compared to Dutch's fanatical idealism and Arthur's struggle between good and evil, Hosea is the prophet and guide for this group of lost souls.
He cared about everything in the gang. We often saw Hosea teaching young Jack to read, talking to Abigail to encourage her and tell her the future would be better, and talking to John to hope he could take care of his family. He was like a patriarch, providing emotional comfort to others.
In Arthur's journal, he describes Hosea as kind and fair, radiating humanity. Arthur's ability to retain his kindness in the chaotic Wild West is undoubtedly related to Hosea's daily teachings.
Hosea clearly recognized that the gang was no longer tolerated by the times, and that if things continued as they were, without seeking change, the gang would eventually come to an end. He tried to save it, but due to the limitations of the era and the stubborn and dissolute heart of a certain person, he ultimately couldn't come up with a good way to make the gang live a better life.
Hosea recounts his past to Henry, recounting how he was a mediocre comedian in the first half of his life, then reflected on himself, learned from his mistakes, and found a new direction in life, switching careers to criminal investigation and becoming a con artist. It was through this that he met Dutch van der Linde, and the two initially clashed but eventually discovered each other's strengths and developed a mutual appreciation, which led to the formation of the van der Linde gang.
For example, his dream when he was young was to become a priest. He also once thought about finding the legendary dragon, but unknowingly, they became it.
Henry and Hosea discussed the changing times, the development of urban civilization, and the inevitability of a society governed by the rule of law. But before they could delve deeper into their conversation, Dutch appeared before them.
"Good morning, Henry. And you, Hosea, it seems you've recovered quite well after a night's rest."
Good morning, Dutch. How did you sleep last night?
“Very good, this is the best sleep I’ve had in days. Thank you for your generosity, Henry.”
"Also, there's something I'd like to ask you, Henry. I sent someone to scout ahead, but he hasn't returned. Last night, Arthur and I went to look for him, and we found a small ranch in the northwest where a battle recently took place. Do you know anything about what happened there? Would it be convenient for you to tell us?" After a brief greeting, Dutch asked about the main reason he had come to see Henry.
"Of course, Dutch, there's nothing I can't say. That ranch is called Adler Ranch, the ranch owned by the Adlers who prepared food for you yesterday. As you can see, it has been taken over by the Odrisco gang, and the leader there happens to be the one who hurt my men, so we came and wiped them out."
"Dutch, if you're interested in Odrisco's help, we brought back two prisoners. They're tied up in that little empty house across the street, and we don't know what to do with them. How about you handle them?"
Henry knew Dutch wasn't easily trusting, so he deliberately spared two prisoners, letting Dutch investigate the Ottoman gang's train robbery. He wanted to find a pretext to sow discord among the gang members, planting seeds for future plans. He also wanted to know the extent of Cornwall's development and the information found in Cornwall's private carriage on the train.
"Thank you so much, Henry. You may not know, but the Odrisco gang has always been at odds with us. They're our enemies, and I need to get some information about their gang from them. If you ever need anything, just let us know, Henry."
I have to go take care of some things now. You know how tough things have been for us lately. I have a lot to worry about and to plan for the future of the gang. See you later.
Hosea, please take good care of our friends for me.
Dutch called out to Hosea, who was smoking his pipe and pondering Henry's words about civilized society, and then hurried off to the small house across the street where the Austrian gang members were being held.
Just as Hosea and Henry were about to continue their conversation, they heard Abigail pleading with Arthur to save John.
Henry and Hosea got up and went over. "Please, Arthur, John, he's been missing for two days in this blizzard."
"Don't worry, your John will be fine. He's as stubborn as a rock..." Arthur said defiantly, clearly not fond of John at the moment and still angry about his earlier departure.
“At least go and take a look,” Hosea interrupted Arthur’s grumbling. “Maybe something has happened. The gang is short-handed right now, and almost everyone is injured. You’re the only one who’s suitable to go out, Arthur.” Hosea looked at Abigail’s worried face and the weather outside, and tried to persuade Arthur.
“I’m not good at finding people, and I don’t think he’ll get into any trouble.” Arthur wouldn’t defy Hosea’s demands, but he kept complaining.
“Javier, can you help Arthur go out and search?” Hosea asked hesitantly, looking at Javier, who had a minor arm injury. (As mentioned before, since Arthur only returned a few days ago, most of the Van Cleef's men, except for Lenny and Micah, had sustained minor injuries during the pursuit.)
“Perhaps I can be of some help. I’m quite good at finding people. Javier, you’re still injured, so you should rest and recuperate at the camp, or help with guard duty.” Henry interrupted before Javier could answer.
"Do you know which direction John went?" Henry continued to ask.
“I remember Micah went east, while John went west upstream along the stream.” Javier was happy to have someone else do it for him.
“Arthur, let’s go, let’s go take a look.” Henry patted Arthur on the shoulder, gesturing for him to follow.
"Don't touch me, it's not like I agreed to it." Arthur shrugged, saying no, but his body betrayed him as he followed her out.
