Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West

Chapter 62: The First Meeting with Dutch

Around 9 p.m., after a difficult trek through the wind and snow, the Van der Linde gang finally arrived near the village of Plow. Seeing the firelight flickering in the darkness in the distance, like a life-saving beacon, warmed their hearts.

Tom, who was on duty, saw the faint glow of the convoy in the distance and had already sent Wang Zhiqiang to inform Henry, guessing that it was the gang Henry had mentioned.

When Henry led the group to Tom's post, Arthur and Dutch arrived just in time.

Henry greeted Arthur first, and before Arthur could speak, he turned to Dutch and introduced himself:

“Henry Allen, I think you must be Dutch van der Linde. I’ve heard Arthur mention you many times. He has great respect for you and has always wanted to know what kind of person has such charm to earn such respect from Arthur. Mr. van der Linde, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” He then extended his hand to Dutch.

Dutch also showed his enthusiasm, holding Henry's hands tightly and replying with satisfaction:

“Oh, Henry, just call me Dutch. I don’t believe Arthur would praise me. He’ll only say how old Dutch is, how stubborn and such.”

Thank you for your help; it's very important to us now. I'm so glad Arthur has a friend like you.

“Come on, let’s go inside first. I think you all need a bowl of hot soup to warm yourselves up.” Henry looked at the eager-looking Fan gang members behind Dutch, welcomed them into the house, and had Ark bring out the hot soup and meat that had been prepared beforehand.

Seeing everyone wolfing down their food around the campfire, Old Dutch finally felt relieved. He breathed a sigh of relief; he had almost ruined the gang this time.

They had finally weathered the storm. Since the blizzard began, he had been working tirelessly for three days and three nights without a moment's rest. After eating a hot meal with everyone and thanking Henry, he led Fan and the others to the large house that Henry had prepared for them.

Listen...

Everyone, let me say a few words.

We went through... a very difficult few days.

I love David, Jenny, Sean, Mike... They might pull through, they might not. If I could, I would give my life to bring them back... I wouldn't hesitate for a second.

But we will set off, we will have food, everyone, we are safe now...

In a blizzard like this, no one will come after us.

This is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity for us.

By the time they arrived here, we had already flown far away.

We've been through much tougher times, and we've overcome them all.

Now, thank you Henry for everything he has given us. Everyone, keep warm, be strong, and do your part.

Believe me, this is not our final destination.

"Mr. Pearson, Ms. Grimshaw, please make some minor alterations here. We may be staying for a few days, and we can't keep troubling Henry. We need our own food."

Dutch began to deliver his prepared speech with great enthusiasm. His tall, imposing figure, coupled with his deep, magnetic voice, imbued his words with confidence and charisma. If Henry were here, he might understand why the gang members revered him so much. Long-term brainwashing combined with his charisma made it difficult for them to question or betray him at this stage.

“Arthur, let’s go out for a bit and see if we can find John and Micah. I sent them out to scout before you came back, but so far only you have returned. We haven’t encountered them yet; they must have gone down the mountain.”

"In this weather?" Arthur wasn't interested in either of them at the moment and clearly didn't want to go out in the wind and snow. He hadn't had a proper rest in a long time, and he wanted to lie in his warm bed.

“We’ll be right back, hurry up, Arthur, you can’t just leave them behind.” Dutch urged, seeing Arthur’s reluctant look.

In the snowstorm, when Arthur finally had time to be alone with Dutch and had the chance to ask him what had happened on the money ship, he was immediately brushed off with Dutch's classic excuse, "We're like this without you." Then Dutch proceeded to brainwash him relentlessly, saying things like, "You're the only person I can rely on; you have to help me restore the morale of the others," and so on. That is, until they met Micah.

"Micah, what did you find?"

"Yes, I found a small farm over there, but I wasn't the first. There was just a one-sided battle there, with many Odrisco gang members killed or wounded, and all the supplies were taken away."

Upon hearing that it was related to the Odrisco gang, Dutch fell into deep thought.

“Dutch, I think Henry might know something. Maybe we should go back and ask him.” Arthur thought of what had happened a few days ago.

“Alright, let’s go take a look, then go back and rest. We’ll find out more about Henry’s situation tomorrow. Arthur, do you know why Henry is here?” Dutch was still wary of Henry. Although Henry had acted friendly, Henry’s strength made Dutch feel uneasy for some reason.

“I don’t know much. Maybe the battle Micah mentioned is related to Henry. Do you remember when Henry helped me a few days ago? They had just cleared out an important stronghold of the Odrisco gang—Hound Ranch. I heard it was because one of the Odrisco gang leaders offended his subordinates, and he must have been chasing them all the way here.” Hearing that Henry had a grudge against the Odrisco gang, Dutch was visibly relieved and suddenly felt that Henry was not so bad after all.

They were able to get through this crisis temporarily thanks to his help. Besides food and supplies, there was also the threat from the Ao Gang. Otherwise, if the Ao Gang had suddenly attacked them while they were exhausted, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

When Micah heard Henry's name, he recalled the figure that had silently appeared behind him that day, knocking him unconscious and rendering him impotent. A look of hatred and fear flashed in his eyes. After recovering from that injury, he went to great lengths to find out who had knocked him out and had even put them in prison.

He knew he was no match for Henry in physical combat, and Henry was always accompanied by bodyguards. He could only try to strike from a distance, but he hadn't found a suitable opportunity yet.

Soon after, the two followed Micah to Adler Ranch. After a thorough inspection, they found little in the supplies, but gained a deeper understanding of the armed forces around Henry.

The three returned to Plowstone Village looking exhausted and fell into a deep sleep in the room that Grimshaw had arranged for them.
