Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West

Chapter 49 The Aftermath of the Robbery

After Arthur and his team were running out of ammunition and barely managed to fend off three waves of pursuit before Chief Dunbar arrived with a large number of officers to provide support.

The Pinkerton detectives, who had lost $15, immediately contacted Councilman Matthew after learning that Dutch had escaped Blackwater empty-handed. With his approval and support, they quickly sealed off the entire town of Blackwater and sent telegrams to mobilize a large number of personnel from other places to begin a thorough search of the town.

As for the Odrisco gang entrenched in Riggs Camp, when Colm's spies discovered that Datch had left Blackwater empty-handed, and Pinkerton was making such a big move and searching for their target so frantically, they also quietly slipped away with their men. They couldn't afford to mess with them, so it was best to stay out of the way.

Although he had far more men than the Fan gang, he didn't have any sharpshooters, let alone the fact that the other gang had four sharpshooters who were still being outmaneuvered. What did he have to offer in terms of peacekeeping? If it weren't for the fact that he was willing to sacrifice lives, and his own extreme caution, he would have died countless times over.

Late at night, as the Van der Linde gang members escaped, the 'black' forces and street thugs who had taken advantage of the chaos in the city were quickly quelled under the vigorous efforts of Dunbar and Grant.

However, martial law is still in effect, and residents are ordered to stay home. The homeless have been herded to the large square in front of the North District Bank for unified management. Patches of blood are visible everywhere on the streets, and the silence is eerily profound. Only the whispers of guards moving corpses can be heard.

At this moment, in Henry's home, Paul, Li Yi, Zhang Wei, Carl, and Flying Eagle were reporting their respective mission progress to Henry.

First, let's talk about Li Yi's side. His main task is to observe the overall progress of the Fan Gang's attack in the early stages and the whereabouts of the Caland brothers after their retreat. There's not much to say about that; I've already reported that to Henry. Now, I'll mainly report on the Caland brothers and Jenny's move to the ranch.

"The Calander brothers and Jenny have safely moved to the ranch and are temporarily housed in a secluded, dark room. They traveled very discreetly and never showed themselves in the carriage. There was no indication that they were being followed. Robert, Ellie, and Dr. Jones are stationed there to guard against any unforeseen circumstances."

David was shot in the left shoulder by Langdon, but thankfully the bone wasn't broken. After treatment by Dr. Jones, he should recover in about a month. Jenny's condition is similar to David's.

As for Mike, he wasn't so lucky. According to Dr. Jones, if he hadn't been brought in in time and if he hadn't been so experienced in treating gunshot wounds, he might not have been able to save Mike's arm if he had been brought in any later.

Because of the bone injury and excessive bleeding, it will take several months to resume daily activities. The recovery will depend on the environment and the individual's physical condition. With good luck, recovery can be achieved within 2 years. However, during the recovery process, the right hand should not be overused.

We also discovered that Sean hid in a house on the southeastern border after the arson and riot, but hadn't shown up. Later, I saw many bounty hunters in the vicinity. After relocating the Calander brothers, I went back to investigate and found that Sean had been tied up; they had been captured by a bounty hunter organization led by Ike Skye. Because they outnumbered us, I didn't act rashly to avoid detection.”

"Okay, I understand. You did the right thing. Go and rest for a while. You've worked hard tonight."

After Li Yi finished speaking, Carl continued, "Tonight, we cooperated with Grant to successfully destroy several gang hideouts in the South District, and found their transaction records with South District Sheriff Bernard Weaver at their respective hideouts."

After being interrogated by Grant, they confessed. They are currently being held in the South Precinct jail, awaiting transfer to Chief Dunbar tomorrow. As for Sergeant Bernard Weaver, he was reportedly shot by Fan's gang and seriously wounded, and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Most of the officers he took with him were also killed, with only a few others suffering injuries of varying degrees and receiving treatment in the hospital.

Additionally, we observed that John and Javier, members of the Van Gang, had successfully escaped Blackwater. A few minutes later, a mixed group of bounty hunters and Pinkton agents gave chase. However, we didn't hear any more gunfire after that; we don't know if they failed to catch up or were simply too far away.

"Alright, thank you for your hard work. Go back to the thieves' territory tomorrow and let everyone rest for a few days. Don't bother sending wine over for the next few days. I estimate that things won't be calm in the city for a while. Also, give each person who participated a $50 bonus. I'll cover the cost. Karl, you can just deduct it from this month's profit share. Remember to tell them to keep it a secret."

"Don't worry, Henry, these people are all handpicked by me and are trustworthy. I gave them instructions before we set off. Besides, they don't actually know the identities of the Caland brothers. The Caland brothers wore masks the whole time and got into the carriage very quickly. Ashley and I were the ones who made contact with them."

"Okay, I trust you to do things right. Go and get some rest."

Next was Eagle's side. He was in charge of monitoring the Odrisco gang. He explained the Odrisco gang's activities outside the city at the beginning of the night. However, after hearing the intense gunfights and alarms, they stopped and sent out a few scouts. Soon after, they retreated directly to the north and did not return to their temporary base at Riggs Camp.

Paul then described the situation in various parts of the city that evening, with the South District being the most chaotic, as most gangs and street thugs reside in this poor area. Multiple incidents of vandalism and looting had occurred amidst the chaos, with at least eight shops and five pedestrians reportedly injured.

However, thanks to Henry's prior instructions, Grant's officers, with the cooperation of Carl's bootlegging team, quickly quelled the riot and imprisoned the troublemakers; otherwise, the damage would have been far greater. As a result, the temporary prisons at the South Precinct are now overcrowded, with people practically packed together. This has forced Grant to personally oversee the operation.

Then there's the West End, where the situation isn't much better than the South End, but Chief Dunbar, who was prepared, personally led his team to handle it. As for the East and North Ends, apart from the gunfire and the fire caused by Sean, there wasn't much unrest. After all, these were the areas where the Van Gang and Ping Keton fought most fiercely, so who would be so reckless as to show their face on the street?

The final highlight was Zhang Wei's side. "Boss, as you instructed, I followed Dutch the whole time. After he had Arthur, Micah, and Bill intercept Pinkerton's pursuit, he and Hosea drove a carriage with two large chests of money around the North District for a short while before secretly returning to a house in the West District."

Then they carried the boxes inside, and a few minutes later, they carried the two boxes back to the carriage. After secretly driving to the North District, they drove around the North District for a while in a slightly more conspicuous manner, and then secretly came to a recess in the middle of a cliff by the Upper Montana River, put the boxes in, and covered them up. However, judging from their movements, the two boxes were not heavy.

Finally, they appeared somewhere in the North District in an empty wagon, abandoned it in a corner, and hastily rode back to their camp without any attempt to conceal their actions. Then their entire gang began heading north, and I turned back.

On the way back, I ran into Arthur and Bill, but I didn't show myself; they went after the gang in the direction they were heading.

When I returned to the North District, I ran into Micah again. He was investigating something near the empty wagon that Dutch had abandoned. However, when Chief Dunbar arrived with a large conspicuous number of officers, he hurriedly rode away, glancing back at the wagon area every now and then.

“Well done. Draw the location and appearance of that house in the West District, and that cliff for me... Never mind, we'll disguise ourselves tomorrow. Zhang Wei, you take me there yourself.”

“Paul, come and see if this spot looks familiar. Did Dutch come here a few days ago?”

Paul looked at the simple markings Zhang Wei had made on the makeshift map, thought for a moment, and then said:

“I seem to remember this place. There was a rather old and large house over there, but the owners are no longer here. It seems that a few years ago, the whole family moved to Saint Denis because of their business, but they never dealt with the house and left it behind. They even hired an old man to occasionally go over and help them clean it.”

According to previous intelligence, Dutch did indeed appear there alone, and for quite some time.

“Okay, I understand. Everyone, go with Paul to the hotel next door to rest. Zhang Wei, you can stay here with me. We’ll go for a walk tomorrow.”
