Red Dead Redemption: The Great Philanthropist of the West
Chapter 14 Facing Morveli
After distributing the weapons, Henry led them out of the cave before engaging them.
After surveying the terrain, Henry led them to a small slope not far ahead, below which lay the path leading to Beaver Rock Cave.
It's a great place to ambush, with high ground and several large rocks for cover.
Henry tossed a shotgun to the two female hostages for protection, told them how to fire it, and instructed them never to point the gun at their own men, telling them to stay hidden and not come out.
Then he arranged ambush positions for Antora and Grant, and took out high explosives from his backpack, giving each of them a few, to be lit and thrown down together when he gave the order.
Lorian and the others gaped as they received the explosives, wondering how Henry could carry so much explosives; was he ready for war at any moment?
Despite their surprise, they knew this wasn't the time to ask that question.
Their initial unease quickly subsided, and they even felt a little excited.
With this powerful weapon on the battlefield, if thrown well, it might be possible to wipe out most of the enemy's main force in one wave.
As the full moon slowly climbed overhead in the west, faint lights appeared on the distant path.
"They must be coming back. Everyone's taking cover. Safety first, killing the enemy second. With me here, the enemy won't get away."
"Prepare the explosives. Await my instructions. Okay, quiet."
As the enemy slowly approached, Henry finally saw their numbers. Fortunately, there were only about twenty, and many were wounded—probably the work of Flying Eagle.
The four men stared intently at the Movery family members as they reached their designated spot.
"Ready, light it, throw it," Henry said quickly in a low voice.
At the same time, they threw explosives into the crowd.
"Boom... Boom... Boom..." Before the Mofri family could react, they were blown to pieces by the explosives.
"The enemy is up there, charge!" When the remaining men finally realized there was an ambush and prepared to return fire towards Henry and his men.
Another wave of explosives was dropped.
"Keep lighting fires, keep throwing, until they're all gone."
As the booming explosions below gradually subsided, most of the Movery family members lay scattered and broken on the roadside.
The remaining few lucky survivors could no longer muster the courage to resist and were shot dead one by one by Henry and his men during their desperate escape.
After quickly cleaning up the battlefield, Henry couldn't resist leading them towards the place where they had camped the day before.
It was absolutely disgusting; there was blood, flesh, and mangled limbs everywhere. The two female hostages were vomiting uncontrollably.
Not long after they left, they encountered the Flying Eagle.
It turned out that after seeing the Movery family retreat, Eagle was afraid that Henry and his group would be in danger, so he followed them again.
"You're all alright, that's wonderful!" Flying Eagle was so excited to see that everyone was unharmed that he rushed over and gave each of them a hug. This made Lorian blush, though it was hard to tell because of her skin.
“I’m glad to see you’re alright, brother. We were just about to head to the camp to meet you. Now we don’t need to. Let’s find a suitable place to camp nearby and head straight to Annesburg at daybreak,” Henry said.
“Grant, you take charge of guard duty. Lorian, you and the two ladies go and tidy up the tent.”
"Flying Eagle, you and Antora go gather some firewood nearby. I'll prepare the ingredients. Soon we'll have roasted meat and hot soup."
After assigning tasks to each other, Henry also took out some ingredients from his backpack to prepare.
Perhaps it was the sound of explosions from the battle just now; there weren't any large animals nearby.
As the bonfire burned brightly, the slightly damp air around us felt warmer. Everyone's hearts gradually calmed down.
Everyone gathered around the campfire, watching Henry flip the roasting meat from time to time, the sizzling oil constantly bubbling out, making everyone's appetite increase.
When he took out his special spices and applied them to the roasted meat, the aroma filled the entire camp, and everyone subconsciously swallowed.
We didn't realize it during the fight, but now we realize that we haven't eaten for almost a day.
"Alright, let's eat." Lorian poured each of them a cup of coffee, and then cut up a whole roasted deer leg into portions for each person.
"I never expected Henry to cook so well. Why did you always make Lorian and me cook before? We can't cook as well as you." Antora complained to Henry with her mouth full of oil.
“You guys did a good job too. Next time I’ll make you more spices, and you can make it just as delicious.” Henry indicated that he didn’t want to cook for a large group of people all the time; cooking once or twice was enough.
"Flying Eagle, now that you've finished eating, go relieve Grant on guard duty. Let him come and eat something first; I have something to discuss with him."
A moment later, Grant came over. Henry gestured for him to sit down and have something to eat. It was clear he had been starving for a long time.
After all, he had been captured for two or three days, and the Movery family only gave him a little food and water each day to keep him alive.
"Thank you for saving me, sir. I don't know your name yet," Grant said to Henry while eating heartily.
“Henry Allen, you can just call me Henry.”
“Mr. Henry, you seem to know my name. How did you know I was the sheriff?”
"I first learned about you from a cigarette card, Slim Grant, the famous black and white series, ranked sixth in the sharpshooting team. Later, by chance, I met kid Calaway in a bar and heard him talking to others about you being the sheriff in Annesburg. He seemed to be thinking about dueling with you."
"I didn't expect anyone to still remember us; that was so long ago. That coward finally mustered the courage to challenge me to a duel, but I don't care anymore."
"Would you mind telling me why you were captured by the Mofri family? Logically speaking, with your skills, a few people shouldn't be able to defeat you."
When Henry asked this, Grant fell silent for a long while before saying:
“I don’t know why this happened. We received a report that the Movery family was frequently committing murders and robberies in this area. But they outnumbered us, and my colleagues didn’t want to take the risk.”
I believe that as bailiffs, we should not disregard the safety of people's lives and property. We are determined to bring them out to arrest Mowgli's men.
But they wouldn't compromise and went on strike until I offered to use myself as bait to lure out Mofri's men, and then have them flank and attack from behind.
As a result, whether Mofri's men received the news or it was just bad luck, I encountered their main force that day. A dozen or so men surrounded me, while my companions never appeared... until I met you.”
"Sometimes I wonder if it's worth staying in this town. The town is full of lifeless people. The streets are filled with prostitutes who serve the miners and miners who dig pits for Cornwall day and night. People die silently every day."
My words, as the sheriff, carried less weight than those of Cornwall's underlings. Even my deputy and other colleagues worked solely for Cornwall.
I suspect someone betrayed me and secretly informed Mauve about my actions before my arrest.
