Chapter 62 (Narukami) The God's Wife

As usual, after completing the quest, the traveler received an invitation from Ayaka Kamisato. They ate together, went shopping together, and finally sat down at Kamisato's residence to chat.

The atmosphere was wonderful, filled with joy and happiness. But Paimon's question suddenly changed the mood.

Paimon was curious whether someone like Miko had ever been in love. They say love brings about wondrous changes, and given Miko's penchant for teasing, would she change after falling in love?

The traveler looked at Linghua, who had suddenly sat up straight, somewhat bewildered, not understanding why she had become so serious. Seemingly having regained her composure, she said, "That princess is the general's wife; she should not speak so recklessly."

Paimon and the Traveler exchanged bewildered glances upon hearing this, both feeling as if they had stumbled upon a truly earth-shattering piece of gossip.

After a few seconds of stunned silence, the Traveler and Paimon surrounded Ayaka Kamisato with identical smiles. They asked Ayaka in unison, "Is this real or fake? We've never heard of this before."

Ayaka's expression grew even more serious. She used a folding fan to shield her face, unwilling to say more. As the eldest daughter of the Kamisato family, known as the White Heron Princess, she never acted rashly. When it came to matters concerning the gods, she avoided them at all costs, never wanting to bring any harm to herself or her family.

The traveler and Paimon exchanged a glance, realizing they couldn't get an answer, and could only suppress their curiosity. The topic shifted, and the atmosphere among them returned to its previous relaxed state.

A few days later, the curious travelers brought Paimon to Narukami Shrine. Unfortunately, they didn't get to see the shrine maiden at first and were instead dragged into doing some chores.

Seeing Maki's haggard and worried face, the traveler helped her tidy up the fortune slips on the roof. These were bad fortune slips that others had drawn, because people would leave bad fortune slips at Narukami Taisha Shrine to take away bad luck, based on a rumor that had come from somewhere.

Maki watched the traveler's agile figure climbing up and down, and chuckled, covering her face. As the traveler approached her, holding the collected slips in her hand, she asked, "What brings you to see Lord Kuji? He won't be back for the next few days."

The Traveler and Paimon exchanged a glance, then pulled Maki to a corner. Maki was a little confused, but she didn't struggle. The Traveler and Paimon approached Maki with mysterious expressions and asked, "Hey, Maki, you've been at Narukami Shrine for a long time, haven't you? You must know a lot of things, right?"

As Maki looked at the traveler's approaching face, she blushed slightly with embarrassment. When she heard her question, she could only nod awkwardly.

Upon seeing Maki's response, the traveler became even more excited. Her face was filled with curiosity. "So, did you know that the Divine Child is General Raiden's wife? Is that true?"

Upon hearing the Traveler's question, Maki made the same expression as Ayaka Kamisato before, and she suddenly became serious. Then, she secretly glanced around and, finding no one else, quietly said to the Traveler, "No wonder you wanted Lord Miyaji. I can secretly tell you it's true, but you still need to ask Lord Miyaji for the specifics. However, I don't recommend that you ask him."

Paimon became even more interested and asked from the side, "Why? Is there some hidden reason?"

Upon hearing this, Maki simply shook her head and remained silent. After handing her the payment for the travelers' work, she saw them off. She then reminded them that the shrine maiden would likely return to Narukami Shrine the day after tomorrow, and if they were truly curious, they could come and ask her then.

The traveler and Paimon obediently left, but something still felt off about Maki's words. Was it something that shouldn't be asked? Why was everyone so reluctant to discuss it?

After patiently waiting for two days, the traveler brought Paimon back to Narukami Shrine, where they finally met the shrine maiden.

When they met the goddess, she was smiling at them. Although they had come full of curiosity and were not afraid of difficulties, they hesitated a little when they actually saw the goddess.

"I heard you came to see me last time. Is there a problem?" Yae no Miko was holding the latest light novel, and she had obviously been reading it. But when she saw the two travelers, she immediately put the book down and stopped reading.

Paimon looked at the Divine Child. Every time she smiled, someone was going to be unlucky. She didn't want to be the unlucky one, so she shamelessly hid behind the Traveler.

The traveler felt a little awkward. Looking at the goddess's exquisite face, she blurted out in a moment of panic, "Goddess, do you like Rai?"

Yae no Miko's expression froze for a moment; she hadn't expected the traveler to ask this. After a few seconds of contemplation, she composed herself and replied, "Many people are afraid of thunder, but when I hear thunder, I only feel close to it."

A look of understanding flashed in the traveler's eyes, but the divine child suddenly moved closer, his cheek almost touching hers. "Is this what you came here to ask?"

The traveler was speechless when suddenly a pale white hand pulled the goddess away, letting the mischievous fox stand beside her. It was none other than Lei Yingdian, who had come here to find the goddess.

"Don't get so close to others, Divine Child." Shadow frowned.

The shrine maiden looked at her god and blinked. "Oh dear, that god is so petty. She glares at people if they don't listen to her. It's really scary, sob sob sob." As she spoke, the shrine maiden even wiped non-existent tears from her eyes in a very convincing manner.

The Traveler and Paimon stood to one side, watching Shadow frantically try to soothe the feigningly crying Goddess. They found it amusing, wanting to laugh but afraid of being punished, so they held back their laughter. The frequency of their trembling made it seem like something was wrong with them.

Before the shadow could notice, the divine child looked over and said, "You came to me earlier, not because of that question just now, right?"

The traveler shuddered upon hearing the goddess's words. Glancing at the curious shadow beside him, he finally asked, "Goddess, what exactly is your relationship with the general?"

"General, what is my relationship with her? Let me think." The goddess stroked her chin, pretending to be deep in thought.

Then she brought up other things, saying, "Speaking of which, you haven't been in Inazuma for very long, so there are some aspects of the local culture that you don't know yet."

Seeing the curious eyes of the Traveler and Paimon, the Divine Child continued, "Did you know that in the legend of Inazuma, the shrine maiden is the wife of the god? And I am the one in charge of Narukami Shrine. However, before, Kage became the shogun and locked himself up, and he has a very bad temper. So, even if some people know about me and Kage, they don't have the courage to say it."

"Is this what you want to know?" The goddess's smile was ambiguous, as if she were reminding the traveler of something.

Upon hearing the Divine Child's words, the Traveler's eyes lit up, finally satisfying her curiosity. She glanced at the bewildered Shadow beside her, covered her mouth and chuckled, then bid them farewell and departed.

Shadow, standing to the side, still didn't understand what her divine child was saying to the traveler, especially since she was mentioned. However, seeing the divine child's contented smile, Shadow didn't care anymore.

Anyway, as long as the goddess is happy, that's all that matters.
