Chapter 60 (Knowing the Subtle) - Traces
"It's coming for me again. It's going to strangle me. What should I do, Elhesen?"
Perhaps because Kavi was too flustered, his words were somewhat incoherent, and he was just instinctively showing his panic in front of the person he trusted most.
Looking at Kavi in front of him, Elhesen finally sighed and hugged the pale-faced Kavi into his arms. "Are you that afraid of snakes? I promise, he won't hurt you."
Elheisen's words carried a hint of something, but Kavi's mind was completely blank; he was just panicking over last night's dream. Elheisen, who was usually so clever and never stumped by problems, had finally encountered a major issue. He couldn't understand how anyone could be so dense.
That evening, Elhesen found himself with a pillow in tow, looking for Kavi. Kavi was too afraid to sleep alone at night because of the snake, so he had no choice but to come to Elhesen. He figured that even if the snake came, Elhesen could definitely catch it.
Leaning against his bedroom doorframe, Elhesen sighed and rubbed his forehead after hearing Kavi's purpose, then laughed. Kavi, seeing Elhesen laugh, assumed he was mocking him and was about to argue. But Elhesen stepped aside and gestured for Kavi to come inside.
As Kavi entered the room, he was looking around with satisfaction when he suddenly heard a voice behind him: "You'd better not regret this."
Elhesen's eyes gleamed under the light, his bright red pupils subtly slanted upwards, and he looked at Kavi with a smile. Kavi, of course, didn't care about Elhesen's words. He sat comfortably on the bed like a spoiled kitten. Hearing Elhesen's words, he arrogantly replied, "What do I have to regret?"
Then he patted Elhesen's arm as he sat down, looking at the bulging muscles with great satisfaction, "It's up to you now. Protect your senior and drive that snake away!"
Al-Hysen smiled without saying a word, letting him speak.
The first night was peaceful; Kavi slept soundly, without dreams or snakes. The second day, however, Kavi began to dream again, the same tangled, eerie dreams tinged with a strange comfort.
Kavi couldn't sleep well and woke up very early. He saw Elhesen sleeping next to him and cautiously moved closer, trying to gain some sense of security. As he leaned on Elhesen's shoulder, Kavi suddenly noticed that Elhesen's body was a little cold; he must not have covered himself properly with the blankets during the night.
He thoughtfully covered Elhesen with a blanket, using his own warmth to comfort him. Elhesen half-opened his eyes, glanced at him, and then pulled him into his arms.
As Kavi was held tightly by Elhesen, their skin pressed together, he suddenly felt something cool against his waist. Startled, he shakily reached out to touch it.
He only felt the muscles on Elhesen's waist and abdomen; they were a little cool but felt nice. Kavi then relaxed and quietly leaned against Elhesen's chest, taking a nap.
When Tinali saw Kavi, he was genuinely shocked and asked him in disbelief, "You've been working non-stop on several drawings, why do you look so pale? Doesn't Elhesen care about you?"
She quickly brewed a cup of health-preserving tea for Kavi, then looked at him with concern: "You can't continue like this. Relying on your youth to act recklessly will ruin your health."
Kavi listened to Tinari's lecture, tears welling up in his eyes. He simply recounted the recent events in detail, albeit somewhat haphazardly. Tinari listened with shock, his expression suggesting a hidden difficulty, unsure whether to speak or not.
Seno, who had somehow gotten close by, said, "You can report me."
Kavi looked a little bewildered, then excitedly exclaimed, "Disciplinary officers catch snakes?!" He tried to grab Seno's hand, but Seno dodged him, though he didn't seem to mind. He simply said happily, "Great! That snake kept me up at night. Catch it quickly!"
Seno looked at Kavi speechlessly, thinking he was so dull-witted; he wasn't usually this slow. Tinari couldn't help but chuckle, then coughed lightly as he looked at the two people who had turned to look at him.
“…Kavi, look at me, have you found anything?” Tinari pointed suggestively to his ears and tail.
Kavi scratched his head, not knowing what Tina was doing, and after a while it suddenly dawned on him, "Oh, you've been taking great care of your fur lately!" He even gave her a thumbs up.
Upon hearing Kavi's words, Tinali immediately covered his face. Seno nearly spat out the water he had just drunk, but then couldn't help laughing. Kavi turned to look at him, puzzled. "What are you laughing at?"
Under Tina's gaze, Seno composed himself and said seriously, "It's nothing, the tea is so good I want to laugh."
Kavi scratched his head, wondering if this was some new lame joke. Tina was also exasperated. Kavi, who was academically brilliant and quick-witted, was sometimes so clueless in his daily life that it was impossible to understand him.
He could only hint at it to Kavi: "Kavi, I am an orc. Perhaps there are other orcs in Sumeru?"
"Oh, you've made some new orc friends and want me to see if they're good people, right? No problem, leave it to me!"
Kavi patted his chest, assuring Tinari with absolute certainty. Seno laughed again, and Tinari glanced at him. Kavi asked him again, puzzled, "What are you laughing at now?"
Seeing that Tinari was numb to Kavi's slowness and his eyes were a little dazed, Seno opened his mouth to say, "He means that Elheisen is..." Before he could finish speaking, Seno was covered by Tinari's hand.
“It’s nothing, Kavi. Seno took the wrong medicine this morning. You know, he got injured a few days ago and has been taking medicine recently. I wasn’t watching him properly today, and he took the wrong one. Don’t worry about it. Okay, you can go back now. I’ll go change Seno’s dressing.”
Tina quickly told Kavi, while tightly covering Seno's mouth with her hand. Kavi was a little confused, but still obediently went home.
Back home, during dinner, Kavi recounted the day's events to Elhesen, even laughing as he spoke. Elhesen's expression was somewhat subtle, and he made up his mind: waiting for Elhesen to come to his senses was uncertain; he'd better rely on his own efforts.
That night, without Kavi noticing, Al-Hysen took the medicine packet that he had given to Kavi.
Kavi didn't sleep soundly that night; his consciousness seemed to float on the surface of the sea, hazy and disoriented. When he felt the entanglement again, Kavi struggled to open his eyes. This time, he succeeded.
Looking up, in the pitch-black room, a pair of emerald green eyes stared at him, their vibrant pupils bulging with excitement, and the once-cold scales that had wrapped around his body had become warm.
Kavi heard someone laugh; it was Elhesen.
With a sigh, he said, "You finally figured it out, senior."
