Chapter 53 (Empty) Ode to the Wind (End)
“During my time wandering, I saw a very large tree outside the city. Let’s go there,” the wanderer said, walking ahead with a light tone. After his conversation with Nasita, he felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted from his heart, and he was now experiencing a rare sense of ease.
"……Um."
Although Sora was puzzled as to why they had to go there, he obediently followed the puppet out of the city gate to find the large tree. After walking for a while outside the city, they encountered overgrown weeds and bushes. The path became difficult to walk on, so Sora immediately followed the wanderer, walking beside him and taking out his sword to clear the weeds from the road.
The homeless man looked at him but said nothing.
After walking for a while, they came to a clearing. Soft grass grew on the ground, interspersed with Sumeru roses, creating a unique beauty. The most eye-catching thing was the large tree. Kong looked up at the tree; it was indeed very large and lush. Although the most abundant plant in Sumeru was the Enlightenment Tree, it was rare to see one that grew so thick and strong.
"arrive."
The wanderer, who was walking ahead, stopped first, and Sora stopped as well. Then the wanderer turned to face Sora, and quickly stepped forward to take the sword from his hand. Sora did not stop the wanderer; he simply believed that the wanderer still hated him and wanted to stab him with the sword.
The homeless man looked at the empty space in front of him with a "do whatever you want" expression, raised an eyebrow, and said, "You don't think I'm going to kill you, do you? I'm not that stupid. Killing you would just cause too much trouble."
Hearing the homeless man's words, Kong looked at him with some surprise. His dazzling blond hair was striking in the sunlight, and the excitement in his eyes made him look like a happy golden retriever. "Aren't you angry anymore?"
The wanderer did not answer, but simply picked up his sword and walked to the foot of the tree. Then, under Kong's gaze, he danced lightly, just like the little puppet that had danced gracefully under the maple tree many years ago.
He used to hold an exquisite paper fan, but now he holds a sharp longsword. His dance style is also vastly different; it used to be beautiful and moving, like a butterfly fluttering and dancing, rising lightly and then falling. Now it is like a sword stripped of its glitter, its sharpness revealed in every spin and sway.
Sora sat on the ground watching the wanderer, just as he had sat under the maple tree long ago. The wanderer's sword dance under the tree was earnest and beautiful. Sora's sword swayed, rose, and spun with his movements, his robes fluttering. Sunlight gently fell on him like scattered specks, and he leaped and landed lightly, like a breeze brushing the ground, leaving no trace.
As the dance ended, the wanderer approached Kong, sword in hand. Only then did Kong realize that tears were streaming down his face. He hurriedly wiped his face, and the approaching wanderer placed his sword aside. The wanderer gently touched Kong's eyes with his fingers, wiping away the tears with an incredibly tender gesture.
"You've realized it too, haven't you? Everything is different now."
"No, that's not it..."
Kong hurriedly grasped the homeless man's hand; it was fair and intact, showing no trace of the time when all ten fingers had been destroyed. He didn't want to hear the homeless man continue; he knew that once the words were spoken, nothing could be undone.
"I told you back at the World Tree that we've both changed too much. Sora, I can tell you, I still love you. But I don't love you the way I used to."
Seeing you makes me feel like a human being with a heart, happy and joyful. But I don't want to live with you, nor do I want to keep the promise we made. You remember that promise, right?
The wanderer's voice slowly reached Sora's ears, "I will take you away to see all the mountains and rivers." Sora murmured softly.
"Correct."
The wanderer's voice sounded hollow, as if it came from a distance.
Hearing his words, Sora felt as if his heart was being torn apart. It was too late; he understood that everything was beyond repair. Sora tightly embraced the homeless man before him; he loved him. Even though he was a doll, in Sora's eyes, he possessed a burning heart. Sora loved him, from the past to the future, a love that would never be swallowed by time. But they could no longer be together.
The homeless man looked at Kong, who was weeping, and gently leaned against him. He told himself that this was the last embrace.
In Nasita's memory, the homeless man returned very late that day. However, he seemed remarkably calm, as if he had finally resolved something significant. He told her that his affair with Kong was over and that they would have no further connection. Nasita was surprised; she believed the homeless man still loved that person, so why wasn't he willing to give him another chance? But she didn't ask.
For a long time afterward, Nasita didn't sense Kong's presence in Sumeru. She thought Kong would come to persuade the wanderer to stay, but he didn't. Finally, Nasita couldn't suppress her curiosity and asked the wanderer the question.
The wanderer glanced at her. "Huh? Are you curious? How strange, why would a god of wisdom like you care about other people's love affairs?"
Nasita smiled. "Love can also be considered a kind of knowledge, and different kinds of love correspond to different kinds of wisdom. I seek all kinds of wisdom, including the wisdom of love. I just don't understand why, since you still love each other, you won't give each other another chance?"
The wanderer put down what he was holding. "Imagine you have a beautiful, favorite plate that you use to hold all sorts of fruit every day. But one day, the plate breaks, and all the fruit on it is covered in dust and can no longer be eaten. You throw away the fruit, find all the pieces of the plate, and piece it back together perfectly."
"Will you use this plate again?" the wanderer asked Nasita.
Nasita thought about it carefully, and then replied, "If it's broken, it can't hold fruit anymore."
"Yes, it's broken. Even if you put it back together, it's unusable. You can only keep the pieced-together plate as a keepsake. Maybe years later you'll still like it when you see it again, but it's unusable now."
After the wanderer finished speaking, Nasita seemed to understand something. In the days that followed, she never spoke of emptiness again. The wanderer lived a relatively easy life by her side, except that for some reason, he insisted on sending him to the Order of the Church. He even had to write some nonsensical papers, which was incredibly troublesome.
Nasida keeps track of the homeless's situation, hoping they can face their lives with more optimism. The results have been satisfactory; at least everything is moving in a positive direction.
"Nasita! You wretched woman, I told you I wouldn't attend that guy named Tinari's lecture. Why did you still sign me up!"
The wanderer's angry voice reached Nasita's ears, but she paid it little attention. She simply watched the leaves swaying gently in the breeze outside the window. "Hmm, the weather is lovely today," she thought, "a perfect day for studying."
