Chapter 54 Ode to the Wind (Side Story)

Note: This is a story about the daily interactions between the wanderer and Nasita, and it does not involve any romantic pairing.

The wanderer was annoyed; ever since he joined the Causes and Conditions school, one problem after another had arisen. Attending classes, collecting data, writing papers…

There were so many things to do that the wanderer couldn't help but complain inwardly. What was wrong with the scholars in the Order of the Church? They were all like gears, constantly turning, not only spinning themselves but also dragging others along. How infuriating!

When a senior student begged her to help him find information again, the wanderer's expression darkened even more. However, she suppressed her temper and helped the poor senior, who had enormous dark circles under his eyes, search for books about Liyue's history.

Finally, after several people searched diligently and kept meticulous records, the senior student completed his task. Overjoyed, he grabbed the homeless man's hand and wept.

The homeless man smirked and tried to shake him off, but the senior student lowered his hand first. Then, after rummaging around for a bit, he pulled out a box of date and coconut honey candy, left the box with the homeless man, and ran off with the information he had painstakingly found.

Looking at the box of candy in his hand, the homeless man noticed it was the most popular candy of the moment, and quite expensive. "Hmph, but I hate anything cloyingly sweet," he thought to himself with a snort.

Just as the homeless man was about to throw the candy into the trash can, he suddenly thought of the child-like deity. He grumbled to himself, "Oh well, I'll take that troublesome fellow with me. Hopefully, it'll keep her quiet."

When he returned to his lodgings, the homeless man opened the door and, sure enough, saw Nasita. He handed her the candy box, which Nasita immediately recognized as not having been bought by him, but after a moment's thought, she understood what had happened. So, she happily asked the homeless man, "Have you made any new friends?"

The homeless man frowned upon hearing this, but still told her, "I just helped a troublesome guy."

Nasita opened the candy box and took out a piece of honey. "This is good too. The candy is very sweet. Thank you."

Initially, the two wouldn't have interacted like this. After the traveler left, Nasita arranged a house for the wanderer. Although the wanderer said it was his cage, he actually used it as a place to stay and would go back to rest every day.

At first, he was unwilling to rest, considering himself a doll who didn't need a daily routine like humans. But Narcida didn't think so. She believed that all intelligent beings needed rest, that mental fatigue was different from physical fatigue, and that wanderers also needed to alleviate their mental fatigue.

The wanderer couldn't win an argument with Nasita, so he started avoiding her. But no matter where he went, this girl could always find him with perfect accuracy. She would even look at him with a gentle smile.

The gentleness from the gods made him back down.

The wanderer would obey Nasita's words, sleeping and resting every day. When he saw this childlike deity standing before the stove, trying to cook for him, the wanderer was speechless. He then snatched the tools from her hands, placed her on the sofa, and went into the kitchen to cook a meal himself.

When the food was served, Nasita's eyes sparkled, and she earnestly praised the homeless man's cooking skills. The homeless man turned his face away from her, his expression a little unnatural, and said, "Eat quickly."

Nasita looked at his reddened ears and smiled gently.

Since then, Nasita and the wanderer often lived together in that house. They weren't together all the time, but they kept each other company.

Nasita often handled work at the Pure Land Palace, but initially her efficiency wasn't very high. As a wise deity, after being imprisoned by the Sage for many years, she wasn't very good at handling official documents. Even with the help of the acting Sage, Elhesen, there were still many things to deal with after the war.

So she would take the work she hadn't finished that day back to their house and continue working on it. When the homeless people saw Nasita working, they initially didn't react much; they just frowned and didn't look at her.

The first time, he ignored Nasita. The second time, he didn't go to see her, but covered her with a thin blanket while she slept. The third time, the wanderer stood in front of Nasita, looking at her somewhat haggard expression, and asked her mockingly, "As a god, you have no capable subordinates; you are truly incompetent."

Nasita ignored his words and gently explained to him why she was so busy. The wanderer turned and left without a word, but just as Nasita was about to continue working hard, the wanderer returned.

He asked Nasita if she trusted him and was willing to let him help her. After receiving Nasita's affirmative answer, he told her fiercely that he would only help her this once.

With the help of the homeless woman, Nasita finished the rest of her work in less time. The homeless woman didn't just take the work and correct it; she would tell Nasita how to solve different problems.

As the executor of the Fools, he also reviewed many documents for the Fools when he was a skirmisher. However, at that time, no one cared whether he rested or not. Most people would only give him insincere praise when they saw him working day and night.

Perhaps I'm living too comfortably now, because when I think back to the past, it all seems like a dream.

At the end of his instruction to Narcida, the wanderer reminded her that it would be best to consult the acting sage. There were some things the wanderer himself couldn't interfere with. Narcida, however, smiled and said directly to him, "I trust you."

The homeless man turned his face away again, refusing to look at her. But suddenly he felt that staying here as a "prisoner" wasn't so bad.

Scholars of Sumeru mostly pursue knowledge and put in more effort. The Wanderer joined the Order of the Church as a scholar at Narcida's request, something he wasn't initially interested in. However, Narcida hoped he wouldn't just live in the darkness as a shadow; she wanted him to have his own hobbies and live more freely in the light.

Things are different now than before; you could count the number of people who knew him on one hand. He was free.

The wanderer believed he could retaliate and ignore all the harm and insults, but he could not refuse such pure kindness. He chose from the various schools of thought in the Chancellery, ultimately selecting the Theory of Causes.

He quietly merged into Sumeru, becoming a seemingly ordinary scholar. His days settled down; he rarely thought about emptiness anymore, only seeing that golden figure in his dreams late at night. However, he felt peaceful; his heart calmed down.

The drifting puppet, beside the wise deity, found its own peaceful corner. Two equally lonely souls kept each other company, and neither felt alone anymore.
