Chapter 52 (Empty) Ode to the Wind 8

The message, left in the form of a fairy tale, was easily understood by everyone after they learned the whole story. Nasita realized that the version of herself who possessed the memories of the stragglers must have foreseen that something might happen. That's why she had the traveler accompany her into the World Tree to prevent such an event.

Fortunately, Nasita retained a memory of the stragglers.

"I don't like this ending," Paimon said, shaking his head at the two of them. His expression was somewhat sad; the greedy little fellow was soft-hearted and easily trusting.

"This is precisely why wisdom cannot answer all questions. We look up, we know, we understand, yet we remain trapped by problems. There is no single answer... What life in the world yearns for is always the pursuit of truth and the resolution of difficulties. To return the truth to a person is to return the choice of destiny to them."

Narcida's voice remained gentle; this goddess of wisdom possessed patience and meticulousness towards all things. Seeing Ying's still somber expression, Paimon thought of taking her out for something to eat to cheer her up, and Narcida agreed that a walk would be pleasant. So, Paimon and Ying went out.

Unexpectedly, Ying spotted the stragglers around the corner. However, their personalities seemed to have changed somewhat. Ying watched the entire interaction between the stragglers and the merchants, then followed the stragglers out of the city gate.

After being discovered by the stragglers, he was surprisingly good-natured, unlike before when he would hurl sharp insults. He listened patiently to Ying speak, gently telling her that he was a wanderer with no memories of his past. Ying was naturally astonished to see such a doll. After Ying recounted some things related to the stragglers' past, the wanderer chose to follow him to find his former memories.

On the way, Ying stole a glance at the homeless man beside her. He was obedient and gentle, like a blank sheet of paper. She couldn't help but ask, "You trust me that much? You believed me just because I said I knew you?"

The wanderer lowered his eyes and remained quiet for a moment before speaking: “I met a blond man who looks a lot like you. He… he always looked at me with such sadness. He was hiding in the crowd, probably thinking I hadn’t noticed him. But I’m not stupid, of course I can sense when something is wrong. At least, when I needed sunset fruit, I shouldn’t have picked up such good-looking fruit on the roadside so soon after leaving town.”

“I believe he must know me, so I believe what you said.”

The wanderer looked up at Ying, his gaze gentle, reminding her of the shimmering light reflecting off a stream in the afternoon—so beautiful. So this must have been him before; he looked so easily fooled. No wonder her brother liked him. Ying realized the wanderer was referring to her brother and wanted to explain, but she opened her mouth and couldn't utter a word.

The soldier noticed Ying's actions and kindly said to her, "I didn't mean to ask about your relationship with him. It's okay if you don't want to talk about it." The obedient doll thought she had said something she shouldn't have and waved her hand at Ying in a flustered manner.

The road to Jingshan Palace wasn't far, and they arrived quickly. The wanderer's clear eyes looked at the tiny deity before him. Nasita also looked at the little doll before her, her tender green eyes as gentle as ever, whether facing the defeated stragglers she had hidden or the pure white doll before her.

After a brief exchange, the wanderer resolved to regain his memories. With Nasita's promise, the stragglers and Ying entered the floating memories. They saw many fragmented memories belonging to the stragglers, the image of the Kakeru laughing with others, and his happy life with the little boy…

This also included the image of the pure white doll dancing gracefully under the maple tree, holding a paper fan, while Ying watched her brother, who seemed both familiar and unfamiliar, gazing at the doll. She didn't know if it was because of her brother or because of the doll, but a bittersweet feeling welled up inside her. They shouldn't be like this.

Finally, the wanderer chose to accept all the memories. The radiant memories settled on his chest, and in that instant, many figures flashed before his eyes, and emotions surged forth. As he was lost in the memories, the Seven Leaves of Silent Illumination appeared, shielding the wanderer. At the critical moment, a delicate wind-elemental divine eye appeared before him. He defeated the mech before him.

As his memories returned, the wanderer's personality reverted to its previous state. After exchanging a few words with Ying, he turned to Nasita.

“Little Lucky Grass King, the information in the World Tree, you left it there on purpose, didn’t you?”

“I’ve put a lot of thought into making sure you get the information as naturally as possible,” Nasita replied to the wanderer.

The wanderer looked at the deity standing before him with his arms crossed and asked in a dangerous tone, "Why go to such lengths? Are you trying to win me over?"

"To be honest, past experiences have made you a useful individual to me and Sumeru. Winning you over is indeed part of my plan."

“But before that, I want to tell you the truth about the past. If I’m just using you, then I’m no different from the Doctor.”

As Narcida explained, the wanderer's quills softened, and his gaze towards her became much gentler. After a moment of silence, he said, "...You are indeed very clever."

“This is probably the virtue I should possess.” Nasita’s eyes crinkled as she smiled, like a child who hadn’t yet lost her innocence.

His conversation with Nasita solidified the wanderer's resolve; he decided to stay by the Grass God's side and offer them some help. Perhaps, this was his purpose. The wanderer thought to himself, then looked up and saw Nasita, who seemed like a gentle elder, saying, "He's been waiting for you over there for a long time. Go and talk to him."

The stragglers looked towards that corner and slowly walked forward. While Paimon was still confused about what Narcida was saying, Ying realized that her brother should be over there. She was about to follow the wanderers when Narcida stopped her, "You just saw his memories, let them have a good talk." Ying remained silent; indeed, this shouldn't be her business. There was still plenty of time; she could fight her silly brother another time.

The wanderer walked towards Kong, who stood in the shadows, step by step. His steps were extremely steady; though he was approaching, it felt as if he were leaving. Kong couldn't help but take a few steps forward as well. "You've come."

The homeless man looked at Kong, who seemed a little cramped, and chuckled. "You've been waiting here for so long just to see me, haven't you? Let's go outside."
