Chapter 41 (Knowing the Subtle) The Bird's Poem 7
When Al-Hysen returned, he didn't find anything unusual. The documents on the table told him that Wenna had been there. But he didn't care much; this gentle girl never touched other people's things.
The clever Elhesen could never have imagined that, by accident, Wenna actually communicated with Kavi and even became new friends with him.
Back home, Kavi and Elhesen continued their previous interactions, albeit somewhat coldly, with little communication.
Al-Hysen noticed that Kavi was in a much better mood tonight; he was willing to eat and no longer sullenly squatting in the corner. He was even willing to talk to him.
"Elheisen, I haven't asked you yet, why are you suddenly unwilling to let me out? Is it because I was injured last time?"
Before going to sleep, Kavi suddenly spoke. This was the first time in a long time that Kavi had spoken to Elhesen in a gentle tone.
Elhesen raised an eyebrow and said, "You always like to run away and come back covered in injuries. Why don't you just stay by my side and you won't get hurt? That's the most direct and effective solution."
Of course, Elhesen wouldn't reveal his nightmare, nor was he willing to clearly tell Kavi that he feared Kavi would leave him like a real bird, never to return.
Kavi looked at Elheisen, and the perceptive Kavi could sense something was wrong. Connecting this to Elheisen's previous nightmares, he asked, "What are you afraid of?"
Kavi approached the edge of the cage, gripping the somewhat cold iron bars tightly with both hands. He looked up, his eyes fixed intently on Elhesen.
Al-Hysen chuckled softly, glancing at the birdcage above and then at Kavi inside. "I'm not afraid of anything, and I won't be. You should go to sleep."
Al-Hysen turned off the light, closed his eyes, and refused to speak with Kavi any further. For him, the most effective approach was to resolve problems thoroughly before they occurred. He wouldn't remain oblivious; he would arrange everything meticulously.
Kavi fell silent, realizing that no matter what he said, Elhesen wouldn't back down. But that didn't mean Kavi would give up. For the next few days, Kavi remained by Elhesen's side daily. He struggled to find a way to break through.
Finally, one afternoon, Kavi seized his opportunity.
That day, Elhesen was summoned by an elderly scholar, a man of exceptional talent and kindness. He had helped many people and possessed wisdom unmatched by ordinary people. Even Elhesen could not refuse the request of such a benevolent scholar. Elhesen placed Kavi on his office desk, just as before. Perhaps Kavi's recent docility had made him somewhat complacent. He hadn't expected anything unexpected to happen.
Wenna came in just the same way as last time; she also knew that the elder had called Elhesen away. In a way, she was the one who facilitated this.
She didn't do anything particularly significant; she simply overheard him pondering the interpretation of ancient scripts while delivering documents, and casually mentioned that Lord Elhesen was quite skilled in ancient scripts. The sage then excitedly went to find Elhesen.
While Elhesen was away, Wenna went into the office. She hadn't had a chance to speak with Kavi during this time, and she was worried about him. Kavi was also happy to see Wenna. Kavi told her about his conversation with Elhesen, and Wenna squatted on the floor listening quietly. After listening, she was silent for a while, then asked Kavi a question.
“What are your thoughts? I know I shouldn’t speak up for Lord Elhesen, but he truly values you.”
"Lord Elhesen has always been intelligent and taciturn, as if there is a clear boundary between him and the world. But when he is with you, Lord Elhesen seems to be more worldly."
Winna was a little shy; she wasn't good at praising others, but she hoped her new friend would have a good outcome with the person she respected.
"Some time ago, Lord Elhesen had a longing to go home. I could tell, and it must be because of you. Lord Elhesen's way of speaking has also become a little gentler, and sometimes he would stare blankly at a crimson feather."
Wenna laughed when she saw Kavi's somewhat dazed expression.
“It’s hard to imagine, but it’s true. I hope you’re all doing well. So, what can I do?” After saying that, Wenna looked at Kavi very seriously, her expression expectant, as if she would immediately do whatever Kavi asked.
Kavi was somewhat moved by what Wenna said. He was grateful for her willingness to help him and touched by Elhesen's feelings. But he would never respond to Elhesen's love by locking himself in a cage.
Kavi explained his thoughts and what he needed Wenna to do to her, and Wenna agreed and did as he asked. After everything was prepared, Kavi asked Wenna, who was about to leave, "How can I thank you?"
Wenna turned around in surprise, thought for a moment, and then said to Kavi with a big smile, "Once everything is alright, just give me a box of candy, it has to be really sweet."
Kavi sat by the open window, watching Wenna's departing figure, feeling a warmth in his heart. This was why Kavi was willing to reciprocate life with genuine emotion; there were always warm-hearted people who would pass on their gentleness to others.
Kavi sat by the window, gazing blankly at the familiar yet somewhat unfamiliar scenery. However, Kavi didn't stay by the window for long; Elhesen soon returned. The first thing Elhesen saw upon entering the room was the open birdcage, and his pupils contracted sharply. After scanning the room, he quickly locked his gaze on Kavi sitting by the window.
"Kavi, come here."
Elhesen extended his hand to Kavi, to the palm that Kavi cherished so dearly.
Kavi shook his head, refusing Elhesen's offer. "I'm leaving. Wait for me, Elhesen."
"Are you leaving me?" Elhesen's voice trembled slightly. He dared not approach, afraid that Kavi would simply fly away.
Kavi took one last look at Elhesen, and then resolutely flew away as Elhesen ran toward him.
As Al-Hysen watched Kavi leave, he felt a sudden emptiness in his heart. A strange emotion swept over him, and he found it difficult to even think about how Kavi had escaped the cage, how to find him, and how to bring him back.
Al-Hysen no longer wanted to think about it. He understood that this was Kavi's own choice, and no one could stop him. This seemingly weak little bird possessed a resilience and perseverance that others could hardly imagine.
His most precious treasure has left him.
