Chapter 40 (Knowing the Subtle) The Bird's Poem 6
Since then, their relationship has plummeted.
Elheisen brought out an exquisite birdcage, lined with soft cushions and adorned with fine ornaments. Everything was prepared and placed in the cage. Elheisen remained as caring towards Kavi as before, his attitude even unchanged.
Kavi found it difficult to accept being locked in a cage. He resisted Elhesen's approach and refused to stay in the cage. At first, Kavi would angrily argue with Elhesen, but as Elhesen treated him with the same attitude, Kavi gradually became quieter.
He refused to speak another word to Elhesen, nor did he want to eat. Kavi used this to rebel against Elhesen, hoping that he would be released and that they could get along like before.
Elheisen took Kavi out of the cage and held him in his hand to prevent him from escaping. Then, ignoring Kavi's resistance, he forcefully fed him. Elheisen talked to Kavi every day, regardless of whether Kavi responded to him.
For Al-Hysen, this version of Kavi made him feel safer. Just staying in the cage, by his side, not going anywhere, meant he wouldn't be harmed.
The cage was almost always with Alhesen, and he had prepared a curtain to cover it. Of course, there was no need to cover the cage at home; this was for when he could take the cage with him outside.
Wenna is a staff member in charge of the trivial matters of the Order of the Church. She is gentle and meticulous. She often goes to the offices of the various adults in the Order of the Church to deliver the assigned documents to them. This includes Elhesen's office.
In Wenna's eyes, Elhesen had always been a kind-hearted person despite his cold demeanor. After all, he had repelled the harasser with his icy words when she was being harassed. Wenna kept this kindness in her heart, thinking of repaying this gentleman in the future.
Lately, whenever she came to deliver documents, she would see something covered by a gray curtain on Lord Elhesen's desk. The thing was about a meter tall and looked rather large. Sometimes, when Wenna came in, she would hear Elhesen talking to the cage.
Wenna heard a name, "Kavi." So Lord Elhesen had a pet. What kind of animal could it be? A cat? A fox? Or perhaps a little bird?
Wenna didn't hear any sounds from the caged animal, so she couldn't guess what kind of animal it was. In any case, Lord Elhesen's favorite animal must be very well-behaved and beautiful, otherwise he wouldn't always carry that cage with him. Wenna even managed to catch him a few times, during his breaks, lifting a corner of the curtain and speaking gently to the animal inside. It was a rare sight in Lord Elhesen's voice; it was truly tender!
Wenna was curious, but out of respect, she wouldn't pry into other people's secrets. Discovering the real treasure in the cage was an accident.
During lunch break that day, a senior student asked Elhesen for help, and since he couldn't bring his cage, he left it on the office desk. Wenna came to deliver documents she needed to process that afternoon, as usual. Seeing no one in the office, she placed the documents on a corner of the desk.
Suddenly, she heard a loud noise coming from the cage. She was worried that the animal inside might be sick, but her upbringing wouldn't allow her to touch other people's things without permission. After some struggle, Wenna finally opened the cage. What she found was a delicate little blonde person with red wings.
Wenna was bewildered, and she and Kavi, who had turned his head away, stared at each other. For a moment, neither of them uttered a word.
After a moment of silence, Wenna asked, "Um, are you alright? I heard a really loud noise. Wait, can you talk?" Wenna slapped her head as if she had just realized what was happening, and then started gesturing wildly.
Kavi chuckled at her words. "I'm fine, I just tripped and fell. It's soft inside, I'm not hurt," Kavi's slightly hoarse voice reached Wenna's ears. Kavi hadn't wanted to talk to Elhesen for a long time, and his voice sounded a little awkward.
At that moment, Wenna immediately asked Kavi with concern, "Would you like some water? Let me pour you a glass." She immediately got to work; she liked Kavi very much because he was handsome.
Kavi immediately stopped Wenna. Although he was reluctant to say it, Elhesen took meticulous care of him, considering almost everything, not to mention something as small as drinking water.
Wenna returned and started talking to Kavi again. Both of them were very sensitive and gentle, and they quickly hit it off. They learned each other's names and backgrounds.
Kavi learned that Wenna's quiet, unambitious nature, coupled with a lack of talent and drive, was why she worked as a lowly document delivery person. Wenna also knew about some things between Kavi and Elheisen, but Kavi hadn't told her everything. Nevertheless, Wenna felt sorry for Kavi. This kind-hearted girl had already considered Kavi a friend after their brief interaction.
"Lord Elhesen shouldn't have locked you up here. Although he helped me and is a very good person, this is wrong."
Wenna expressed her opinion somewhat seriously. Then she began to ask Kavi for his opinion.
"What do I think? I... I feel that things aren't right now. I really want us to get along like we used to... although it seems impossible now."
Kavi spoke with a touch of melancholy, his wine-red eyes filled with sadness.
"So, have you two had a proper talk? You both care about each other. I think you could ask Lord Elhesen why he suddenly locked you up."
Unna couldn't bear to look at Kavi's sad face, so she racked her brains and came up with a solution.
"If we ask and find out, maybe it's just a misunderstanding?"
Wenna thought optimistically. Kavi was also inspired by her words. Since Elhesen locked himself in the cage, they really hadn't communicated much. Maybe he should have a good talk with Elhesen today.
Kavi nodded, agreeing with Wenna's suggestion. They chatted for a while, then Wenna had to deliver some documents and said goodbye to Kavi. Before leaving, Kavi told Wenna to put the curtain back in place and not to show any sign of having spoken to him in front of Elhesen. Elhesen had been acting strangely lately, and Kavi's intuition told him it was best not to tell him. Wenna nodded as if suddenly understanding, then followed Kavi's advice, concealing any trace of having touched the cage.
Wenna just felt that she shouldn't touch other people's things. Although she felt very sorry, she thought it was better not to let Lord Elhesen know.
Despite their lack of coordination, they managed to keep it a secret from Elhesen.
