Chapter 4 (Sati) Falling Asleep to the Sound of Rain

A gentle drizzle outside the window irrigated the thirsty rainforest and nourished the parched earth. After the dry and hot weather of the past few days, both animals and plants longed for this heavy rain.

In the cabin hidden in the woods, unlike when working in the jungle, Tinari, having shed her layers of clothing and wearing only a thin black undershirt, was watching the light rain outside the window. Behind her sat Seno on the bed, meticulously applying essential oil to the tail of the person in front of her. Today was a very leisurely day; neither of them had any work, so they were enjoying the tranquility in the cabin.

“Your tail has always been well-maintained, fluffy and soft, like…” After a pause, Seno continued, “…candy made of cotton.” As if unaware that he had said something strange again, Seno continued to stroke his tail.

Tinari was used to Seno's occasional strange behavior and could even ignore it automatically. "Are you done?" she said, stretching her body. Her slender waist resembled a fully drawn bow, agile and powerful, possessing a captivating beauty.

Seno put down the large tail he was holding. Nourished by the essential oil, the tail was even shinier and smoother, with a strange, faint fragrance. "It's done. I'll go put the essential oil away." He touched Tina's waist, feeling a tremor beneath his hand. Tina turned to look at Seno, who smiled and got up to put away the essential oil.

"Put it on the first shelf of that little cabinet, yes, right there." Tinari directed Seno with great interest, sitting cross-legged on the bed, pointing out the direction when Seno went the wrong way.

After putting his things down, Seno sat down next to Tinari. Tinari leaned against Seno, and the two quietly watched the rain outside the window. For a moment, the room was silent, broken only by the pitter-patter of raindrops on the branches and leaves. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the two nestled close together.

Tinari yawned, his eyes half-closed in drowsiness. Last night had been unbearably hot and humid, with constant thunder; even with Seno's company, Tinari hadn't slept well. Now, the quiet surroundings and the gentle patter of rain, with its somewhat lingering sound, made him feel sleepy as well.

Seno didn't say anything; he knew Tinari was sleepy. He gently pulled him to lie down on the bed, held him in his arms, and covered him with a thin blanket.

Overwhelmed by drowsiness, Tina was unusually docile, letting Seno move him around. He simply curled up after lying down, nestling against Seno's chest to be completely enveloped by him. The sound of rain wetting the forest was somewhat noisy, but the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of Seno was soothing that he quickly drifted off to sleep.

Seno held Tinari in his arms as if he were holding his most precious treasure. Feeling Tinari's breathing gradually become steady, Seno closed his eyes. Perhaps it was the comfortable temperature, or perhaps holding his lover made him feel safe and secure; in any case, Seno was about to fall asleep.

Half-asleep, half-awake, all he could vaguely see were the little fox's large ears, which twitched slightly even in its sleep. Seno opened his mouth slightly, but made no sound. Then, he closed his eyes as well.

Sleep well, my little fox. I will always be here for you, no matter what.
