Rebirth: I Became a Maggot 2
Chapter 15 Wildfire
We finally managed to rescue Dafu, which made me very happy. But what made me even happier was the good news Dafu brought: the Queen of Ants was willing to help us.
That news was better than any other news. As long as I could turn into a fly and fly, what would I be afraid of at that time?
Upon receiving this good news, I immediately urged Dafu to hurry back to the ant's nest with me. Let's turn into flies first, no matter what.
Only in this way can I protect myself and find the truth.
We finally managed to climb out of Old Wang's house and took a quick look around. Fortunately, although we were in the village, we were at the village entrance, and it wasn't too far to get to the big banyan tree at the village entrance.
So we started climbing towards the banyan tree at the village entrance. We wanted to get there before dawn so we could make some preparations with peace of mind.
Maggots usually turn into flies in seven to fifteen days when the temperature is low. I don't know how many days I was unconscious before I woke up and found that I had only turned into a maggot. Now a few more days have passed, and I don't know how many more days it will take for me to turn into a fly.
So being able to go back earlier is a good thing, at least it gives you more time to prepare.
I only found this information online when I was bored. I don't really know anything more detailed, and I don't know if there are any dangers in turning a maggot into a fly.
For example, I don't know if there will be any complications during childbirth, or if I'm about to turn into a fly and can't break through the gushing water, I might suffocate myself.
In any case, it's wonderful that the queen ant is willing to help us. I'm still worried about where to find food that will sustain me until I can turn into a fly.
The old road is no longer usable, so we have to take a different route, which means taking a longer detour. Hopefully, we won't encounter any more trouble along the way.
There shouldn't be any animals playing on the road at this hour, right? Even if they were looking for food, they shouldn't be on the road, right?
With this in mind, Dafu and I set off for the ant nest next to the big banyan tree at the village entrance. (For those who don't understand, you can watch the first part of the story.)
Finally, I can go back. Although I'm climbing slowly, I should be able to get there in one night, right? I remember when that chicken bit me and ran away, it only took a few minutes.
Rural areas today are not like they used to be. Now, the entrances to rural areas are all paved with cement roads, just like highways. Except in rice paddies, all the village entrances and villagers' doors are paved with cement roads.
Besides, we can't really just crawl on those concrete roads, can we? What if we run into some careless guy who comes back drunk at night and steps on me and kills me?
So Dafu and I climbed towards the village entrance from the area near the roadside.
It might be slower, but at least it's safer. Even if something unexpected happens, we'll have time to escape, right?
So now Dafu and I are crawling along the path by the roadside. If nothing unexpected happens tonight, I feel like we won't even need to wait until tomorrow; we might arrive by midnight.
My idea was good, but it was as if fate was playing a trick on me. Just after we had been climbing for a while, a few teenagers who were going to an all-night internet cafe suddenly appeared.
Children in rural areas generally don't have computers at home, and with the Lunar New Year approaching, it's common for middle school or elementary school students to go out and play games all night long.
Since staying up all night usually lasts from midnight to 8 a.m. the next morning, kids would typically go out around 10 p.m., walk for more than an hour, and then wait at an internet cafe for a while before they could stay up all night.
How would I know? Because I'm from the countryside, and I used to do this all the time. Even though many families have computers now, it's still more fun to go to an internet cafe together and play online.
As they walked, they discussed who would use the dog head and who would use the barbarian, etc. If they were just walking like that, it would be fine. Even if they were having a big chattering session, it wouldn't matter to me.
But those damned kids started setting wildfires, which made me extremely anxious.
I'll explain the wildfire part here, because I'm afraid some city kids might not understand it when they read my book.
The so-called wildfire is a bonfire lit by rural children by the roadside. They usually like to light the wild grass by the roadside when they are studying at night or coming home late.
This is not only fun, but it also provides light. Since it only lights up the weeds, it doesn't affect the crops. Plus, it's winter, and the weeds catch fire easily, so nobody will say anything about this, and the kids have a lot of fun.
But as luck would have it, these kids started playing with a wildfire while they were walking towards us.
They were coming towards me, getting closer and closer. Seeing those kids walking towards me like monsters, I felt incredibly bitter.
If it were set on fire, even if it wouldn't burn to death, I reckon it would be suffocated by the temperature and smoke.
And all around me were still thick, withered weeds; I estimated that just one match would ignite a raging fire.
As the children's joyful voices grew closer, I felt as if they were a death knell slowly approaching me.
isn't it?
I almost cried. You can't play games with people like this! I just escaped, and now I'm facing the biggest crisis yet. The fires in the distance aren't too bad, since they won't burn over so quickly.
But if those brats came over and set fire to the weeds on my head, I'd really turn into a spicy maggot!
I wonder if I'll end up being eaten by those chickens looking for food tomorrow.
So the only thing I can do now is to run for my life as fast as I can, and hopefully find a hole to hide in. I don’t know if there’s any earthworm hole or anything like that by the roadside.
"Run!" I shouted anxiously to Dafu.
"Ah...? Oh!" Dafu was clearly stunned, and after a beat, he followed me and ran forward.
But how could we possibly climb over walking humans? We crawled as fast as we could, but we only managed to climb less than ten centimeters, while those naughty kids were already above us.
"Wait, there are lots of wild grass here, I'll order one." A mischievous child walked up to our wound and said to the other children who were hurrying on their way.
Then he took out a lighter and lit it on the weeds. As the fire started, it spread rapidly around us, and instantly a sea of fire appeared above our heads.
The worst-case scenario has still happened...
