Chapter 204 A bag of cookies
Shen Yisui never expected Cheng Jingyi to answer him. He only listened to Shen Yisui selectively and never thought too much about what he was saying.
The whimpering sound that had been building up in his throat continued to rise in the room. Shen Yi paused at his door for a few seconds, then followed the route to his room next door.
As Cheng Jingyi watched him walk past her door, the defiant warning she was making gradually faded away.
He put the garbage bag on his bed, tore open a bag of bread, and sat on the bed to chew a few bites. This bread, which had been sitting there for who knows how long, was long past its expiration date; the writing on the plastic bag was barely legible, let alone the production date.
Cheng Jingyi rummaged through the contents with one hand and finally found a sandwich cookie that hadn't expired among the many packages. It was a decent food item in the garbage bag; with a cream filling, at least it still had some flavor.
Cheng Jingyi stuffed the cookie into her pocket, got up, and walked out the door.
Shen Yisui's room was right next to his, very close, separated only by a wall.
Cheng Jingyi deliberately slowed his steps, carefully controlling the strength of his leg muscles, and quietly walked to Shen Yisui's door.
The iron door to the room was long since blackened and rotten, while the wooden doors to the two smaller rooms inside were still barely usable. However, the screws had rusted over time, and they creaked when moved.
Cheng Jingyi stopped in front of Shen Yisui's door. Shen Yisui's door was not closed, and he was looking down and rummaging through the contents of the trash bag, holding a bag of instant noodles that had just been opened.
Cheng Jingyi stared silently for a few seconds, then suddenly reached out and knocked on the door.
After two knocks on the door, Shen Yi raised his head warily.
"What?"
Cheng Jingyi secretly squeezed the sandwich cookie she had in her shirt pocket, feeling a little embarrassed to offer it: "I want..."
Shen Yisui stood in front of the door. He couldn't see Cheng Jingyi's expression, but he heard a sound and then his palm touched the biscuit in Cheng Jingyi's hand.
"The cookies in the bag are all mine, you don't have any." Shen Yisui withdrew his hand, and after saying that, he was about to close the door. "By the way, this room is mine too, don't come in."
Cheng Jingyi paused, "You—"
The door had already been closed by Shen Yisui. Cheng Jingyi stood outside for a moment, his face visibly darkening.
Shen Yisui had not yet returned to his original position. He stood by the wall for a while when he heard the door being pushed open forcefully again without warning a few seconds later.
Shen Yisui felt the chill creeping in from outside, and the meaning in his voice was unclear: "Cheng Jingyi, what do you mean?"
Cheng Jingyi pulled Shen Yisui over. Shen Yisui was on edge. There was a bowl of water left over from last night on the cabinet next to them. He subconsciously reached out his hand towards it.
"Snapped!"
Shen Yi felt a sharp pain in his palm as something was being stuffed into it with a soft sound. His fingertips trembled, then another hand covered the back of his hand and wrapped it into a fist.
Cheng Jingyi didn't say a word. He stuffed the biscuit into Shen Yisui's hand, grabbed the doorknob, and neatly closed the door.
Shen Yisui stood behind the door, somewhat puzzled. He still had the bag of cookies in his palm; the plastic bag was crumpled, and the cookies inside had cracked into several pieces.
"...What does it mean for him to choose to live a life of ignominy?"
Watching from above, the creature, barely clinging to life, carefully scanned the bag of biscuits in Shen Yisui's hand. They were neither poisonous nor harmful, and were safe to eat.
“Based on my years of experience, he’s trying to please you right now,” Gouqiechoongsheng said seriously.
"...Trying to please me?" Shen Yisui was somewhat suspicious.
Cheng Jingyi has always held a high position within the zombie ranks and is predominantly assertive. Using cookies to curry favor with others is not something he would do.
“Of course,” Gouqiechoed, analyzing, “After all, he can only get more benefits if you're happy. Don't you think so?”
Shen Yisui seemed to be deep in thought. He heard the footsteps outside the door fade away, and then he returned to the bedside with the biscuits in his hand.
The cookies in the bag had already been broken into several pieces. Shen Yisui tore open the packaging, pinched a piece, and took a bite. He found that the cream flavor was strong and cloyingly sweet.
"Not bad," Shen Yi commented.
To live a life of ignominy: "..."
Seeing him eating slowly on the bed, Gouqietousheng deliberately reminded him, "Have you read the book I gave you? It's not that I'm rushing you, but you're progressing a bit slowly."
Shen Yisui took a sip of water: "I looked at it yesterday and I'm still sorting through the information."
To live a life of ignominy: "..."
“What’s there to sort out? That book has 7,332 pages, but there are less than three months until the next zombie horde,” Gouqietousheng reminded him. “You need to hurry.”
Shen Yisui: "...Isn't this book too thick? Do you have an abridged version? I read slowly, so I might not be able to finish it."
"No," Gouqie replied simply and decisively, "This is already the simplest version."
Shen Yisui remained silent.
It has 7,332 pages. If he wants to finish reading it in three months, he would have to read at least 80 pages a day.
Shen Yisui is blind. Although he has thoughtfully replaced all the contents of the books with Braille, he still has to touch the text line by line to understand the contents, which is always troublesome.
Gouqietousheng clearly sensed Shen Yisui's resistance to reading Braille. Knowing Shen Yisui's situation, he said, "I can provide you with some extra help. Do you need me to read to you? That way you can read while eating."
Shen Yisui: "..."
"No need." Shen Yi sighed, quickly finished the few cookies in the bag, and said, "I'm full, I'll go watch now."
Overjoyed at its survival, it patted Shen Yisui's head and said, "You are truly the most diligent child I have ever raised!"
Shen Yisui: "..."
Shen Yisui pulled out the book from under the bed. His claim of "living a life of ignominy" was true; the book was as thick as his English dictionary, indeed containing seven or eight thousand pages.
However, this book's cover was different from the others. Perhaps because of its age, or perhaps because of poor preservation, the cover was completely missing, and the first page Shen Yi received was the content.
Shen Yisui ran his fingertips across the pages of the book. He seemed to remember something, and a few seconds later he suddenly stood up, took a long string with a bell attached, and went to the door.
The wooden door to the room could be closed, but the lock had long been broken, so it was still easy for people outside to come in.
After a moment's thought, Shen Yi hung the bell on the handle of the wooden door, which was connected to a hook on the wall. Once the door was pushed, the bell would ring.
