Chapter 20 Learning Magic

Agreed replied solemnly, "I will live on, teacher. I will make the Church of Light pay for the crimes they have committed!"

Upon hearing this, Presidian's expression changed instantly, and he hurriedly advised, "Promise me you won't seek revenge when you're not strong enough. The Church of Light is not as simple as you think. I've heard that their god has recently performed another miracle, and now the Church of Light has become the most powerful organization on the continent. Even Augustus cannot resist them."

Therefore, you must promise me that you will never clash with the Church of Light unless I am stronger than you. Swear it! Right now! Otherwise, I will never teach you even the slightest bit about magic!

Agreed looked at the concerned old man and solemnly promised, "I promise you that I will never provoke the Order of Light when I am not strong enough. I swear on the honor of the Agreed family!"

Seeing this, Presidian finally felt relieved and sighed, "That's good. Don't worry, you are that old man's grandson. I will treat you as my successor and teach you everything I know. Even if your talent is limited and you can only reach the level of a great mage, you can at least pass on the flame called Agred."

Agreed nodded in agreement, and Presidian didn't say anything more because he knew that haste makes waste and that saying too much could have the opposite effect. So he continued, "In that case, let's begin learning magic, but before that... we need to clean up this place." As he spoke, Presidian helplessly pointed to the mess on the ground and then gave an awkward laugh.

Agreed nodded knowingly and quickly picked up the cleaning tools on the ground. Together with Presidian, they spent an hour cleaning up the abandoned attic. After the cleaning was finished, Agreed sat down in a chair to rest, covered in sweat, while Presidian was calm and composed. However, this was because Presidian used magic to control various tools to carry out the cleaning work. The convenient and quick magic amazed Agreed.

After cleaning up, Presidian looked at the panting Agreed and thought to himself, "It seems this kid hasn't practiced the Shadow Council's magic, otherwise his physique wouldn't be so weak. Right now, this kid is truly a piece of rotten wood waiting to be rebuilt. But even so, I will make you shine with a brilliance far beyond what others expect!"

After Agred had rested, Presidian took out a large stack of books from his spatial ring and placed them in front of Agred, saying, "Your task today is to thoroughly study the incantations of these low-level spells and quickly become able to chant and use these basic spells freely. You don't need to cultivate magic power techniques right now; what you actually need is time to settle and control your enormous magic power, which doesn't match your true level. Once you can use second-tier spells as skillfully as a mage, we can proceed to the next stage of learning."

Agreed asked in confusion, "Aren't you going to guide me in my studies?"

Presidian shook his head and denied it, saying, "The purpose of education is to guide, not to lead. It's not like herding livestock. There's no need to push you every step of the way. My role is just to show you a path. How you walk it is up to you. My path may not be suitable for you. Success can never be replicated. This is a truth I've learned over a lifetime."

After saying this, Presidian left, leaving Agreed in the attic to study carefully.

"Illumination Spell, Level 0, a life-related spell. Chanting incantation: 'Great spirit of light, please bring light to this world.'"

Ignite, Tier 0, a life-skill spell. The incantation is: 'Great light of the sun, lend me your power!'

..."Agred looked at the beginner's spellbook in his hand, reading it aloud and chanting the incantations as he went, but he couldn't get it right at all. He could recite the incantations, but activating the magic was obviously not just a matter of reciting them. Otherwise, magicians would not be such a rare profession.

Agred looked at his hands, utterly perplexed, and asked, "What's wrong with this? How do I activate magic?"

While pondering, Agreed suddenly remembered that he had a teacher even more senior than Presidian, and quickly took out the Bible of the Dead, preparing to call upon Tutankhamun for answers to his questions.

But just then, Agreed had an epiphany. Holding the book, Agreed inexplicably remembered the essence of activating magic, which was... the soul!

"That's right, that's correct. Spells are completely worthless; the strength of the soul is the key! So-called spells are just ways for a mage to borrow the most power of heaven and earth with the least amount of soul power!" Agreed shouted as he gradually realized.

Argrede then chanted the incantation for the fire-summoning spell again while drawing upon his soul power. Having cultivated the Styx Soul Forging technique for half a year, Argrede was already adept at guiding his soul power.

After guiding his soul power in, the energy elements in the world instantly responded to Agred's call. A small flame appeared out of thin air in Agred's palm. Agred had succeeded; he had figured out the principles of magic without any instruction.

But Agreed still felt something was wrong. He remembered the original intention of the Styx Soul Forging: a truly advanced mage never uses spells to request, but to command!

Agreed began to frantically unleash his soul power, a massive soul phantom appearing behind him. Then, Agreed shouted, "Fire!"

In an instant, a blazing fireball appeared in Agred's hand. Agred looked at the fireball before him excitedly and shouted, "I did it! I cast a spell without chanting! The soul is indeed the key to magic!"

Just as Agreed was lost in ecstasy, the Necronomicon within his pendant began to hum. Tutankhamun, observing this from within the Necronomicon, murmured solemnly, "To have grasped the technique of instant magic on his first encounter with it! Wow, this time he's truly found an extraordinary successor. Even I back then might not have possessed such comprehension..."

Next, Agred excitedly tried various spells according to the chanting incantation, but innovation is not always successful. He failed to cast many spells instantly, which left Agred covered in dust and dirt from the uncontrolled elemental energy. Fortunately, he was only trying low-level spells with very little power, otherwise Agred would definitely have been blown to death by the violent magical energy.

In less than half a day, Agreed had figured out the essence of Tutankhamun's so-called magic that enslaved the world. Traditional magic was used by combining one's own soul energy with the power of heaven and earth, consuming one's own magic power while casting spells through chanting. However, this method had very obvious drawbacks: powerful magic chants were very long, casting time was too long, and magic power was extremely consumed.

Tutankhamun's enslavement of heaven and earth, on the other hand, involves directly commanding all the natural elements through his powerful soul, instantly casting magic without using his own magic power as much as possible. This method not only greatly shortens the casting time but also makes the spells more powerful, allowing multiple spells to be cast at the same time to create terrifying chain attacks.

However, this method of casting magic also has drawbacks, namely, the stringent requirements on the strength of the soul!
