Chapter 17 The Drunk Teacher
Ten days later, Agreed dragged his tired body out of the examination hall. He had been preparing for the exam like crazy and didn't know if he could pass. Now Agreed was even more looking forward to tomorrow's magic test, after all, he still had a little fantasy in his heart that he could become famous in one battle.
With a sigh of relief, Agred ran briskly home, looking forward to tomorrow's test. Suddenly, a loud noise came from a small tavern in the distance. Driven by human nature's love of excitement, and having been rather bored for the past six months, Agred inexplicably headed towards the place. It was this decision that led Agred to meet another person who would change his life forever. His name was Presidian McLaren.
That day, Agreed arrived at a tavern surrounded by a crowd of bored onlookers and saw a disheveled old man being shoved back and forth by two tavern waiters, who were shouting indignantly.
"Old man, you're drinking and not paying?! Either pay up or we'll teach you some manners!"
The drunkard who was being shoved shouted, "How many times have I told you? I don't have enough money on me! My home is nearby. Let me go, and I'll get the money back for you in a bit."
"Let you go?! Who knows if you'll come back? I don't even know you, where am I supposed to get this money back?"
“I am a teacher at the Academy of Elements. My name is Presidian. If all else fails, just take this medal. I will make sure you get your money back.”
As he spoke, the old man took out a medal, which Agreed recognized at a glance as genuine. Moreover, as far as he knew, only archmages could possess such a badge! This drunkard was probably a very important figure.
Unfortunately, ordinary people don't have that kind of discernment. Normally, it's already quite an achievement for them to see even a magician's apprentice, let alone a magician, who is such a noble figure. Even in Augustus, a place full of magicians, magicians are not something that ordinary citizens can just see whenever they want. No one would associate this poor old man in front of them, dressed simply and looking like he couldn't even afford to pay for a drink, with a magician.
So the guy slapped away the medal that Presidian handed him and angrily shouted, "Stop trying to fool me! Stop pretending to be a magician. If the city guards find out, it won't just be a beating for you! Pay up! If you can't afford it, just pawn everything you have on you, strip naked, and you can get lost."
Presidian, naturally, could not accept such unreasonable conditions, and drunkenly shouted, "Don't be so unreasonable! If you keep making trouble, believe me, I'll tear down this lousy shop of yours!"
Seeing that the two sides were about to fight, Agreed immediately stepped forward and shouted, "Teacher! What are you doing here?"
The two sides, who were about to fight, immediately turned around upon hearing this voice and saw Agreed standing to the side. Agreed stepped forward and asked, "How much money does my teacher owe you?"
The tavern waiter immediately released Presidian's hand and shouted, "Five silver coins! Pay for the drinks and I'll let your teacher go!"
Five silver coins! Agreed felt a pang of pain in his heart. This wine was brewed with silver, so expensive! But there was nothing he could do. This old man in front of him was probably some important person. Five silver coins to do someone a favor, Agreed felt it was a steal no matter how he calculated it.
Thinking of this, Agreed reluctantly took out five silver coins from his pocket, threw them over, and shouted, "Here's the money, but you have to apologize to my teacher!"
The waiter's expression instantly changed, and he said with a fawning smile, "Of course, sir, I'm so sorry, I didn't recognize your greatness. Please forgive me."
Agreed's lips twitched. This young man was truly embodying the saying "money talks." With that fawning manner, I would believe you if you told me he had been a traitor.
Presidian snorted coldly, then turned and left. Agreed immediately followed. Seeing that there was no more excitement to be had, the onlookers dispersed, clearly expressing their disappointment with the outcome of this farce.
Presidian walked a short distance ahead and then stopped to wait for Agred to catch up with him. Finally, Agred caught up with Presidian, panting heavily. Who would have thought that this old man, who looked to be over fifty, was in such good health? Agred had almost been left behind.
Presidian looked at Agreed and said, "Boy, I'm very grateful for your help this time. I'll remember this favor. I live in the Elemental Academy. If you need anything, just take this to the academy and find me."
As he spoke, Presidian took out the medal again and handed it to Agreed, but Agreed did not accept it. Instead, he earnestly said, "Please accept this. It must be very important to you. I am also a student of the Elemental Academy. To be honest, I am helping you not out of kindness, but because I have other requests. Although I do not know you, I know that you, who possess this medal, must be a powerful mage. I hope you can be my mentor."
Presidian was somewhat surprised; the kid was quite straightforward. But this also made Presidian feel inexplicably favorably toward Agreed. After all, a true villain is better than a hypocrite, and frankness is a rare quality, whether good or bad.
Presidian looked at the young man before him, pondered for a moment, and then said, "Judging from your clothes, you must be a first-year student. Although I owe you a favor, I can't break the rules. If you can become a magician apprentice in the second half of your first year and are willing to become my disciple, I will definitely accept you. However, if you cannot become a real magician, then there's no point in discussing it."
Afraid that Presidian might change his mind, Agreed quickly said, "Then it's a deal. Please forgive me, teacher, but I'll bow to you first."
Presidian didn't say anything more, turned around and left. To be honest, he didn't have much affection for this boy who had taken the initiative to approach him, but it wasn't Presidian's style to be ungrateful, so he decided to let the matter rest.
After Presidian left, Agreed cheered happily. Now he could say that everything was ready except for the final push. Just wait and see, tomorrow he would definitely make the whole academy's jaw drop!
The next day, the magic test began in the academy's square. A huge crystal ball was placed in the square, and all the first-year students lined up to participate in the test under the guidance of their teachers. The test process was very short. Most people simply placed their hands on the crystal, and if there was no reaction after three seconds, the test subject would be urged by the teacher to leave quickly.
