Chapter 50: The Owner of the Mysterious Voice
The low voice echoed quietly in the room like a cold wind. Every word seemed to carry the chill from the abyss, penetrating into our bones, making us shiver involuntarily, and an inexplicable fear spread in our hearts.
"Who is it?" I shouted, my voice trembling as it echoed through the silent and mysterious room. I gripped my sword tightly, my knuckles turning slightly white from the strain. My eyes, like those of a sharp eagle, swiftly and vigilantly scanned every corner of the room, not missing a single shadow that might conceal danger.
Luo Chen also gripped his wand tightly, his body leaning forward slightly, like a cheetah poised to pounce on an unknown enemy. His eyes were firm and serious, and although his voice sounded calm, I could sense the undisguised tension deep within him from his slightly tense muscles and quickened breathing.
A stifling, oppressive silence permeated the room, as if the air had frozen. Only the magical light emanating from the mysterious object flickered faintly in the dead silence, a ray of hope in the darkness, yet somehow eerie and elusive. Suddenly, a figure slowly emerged from the deep shadows of the room. It was a figure clad in a black robe, as dark as the night itself, its wide sleeves trailing on the ground, swaying gently as he walked. His face was hidden beneath a hood that resembled a thick, dark cloud, blocking out all light. His features were impossible to discern, leaving only a mysterious and dangerous aura emanating from him.
"You have intruded into a place you shouldn't have." The mysterious man spoke slowly. His voice was low and hoarse, as if it came from far away underground. There was an unquestionable majesty in it, like a monarch high above sentencing the intruders to their crimes.
"We're here to stop the spread of evil," I tried to explain. Though my voice was firm, it still felt a little weak in the face of this powerful aura. My eyes fixed on him, as if trying to penetrate the dark hood and see his true face, while also trying to find some useful clue from his every subtle reaction, even the smallest hint.
"Stop the forces of evil? Humph, you ignorant people always think you're doing the right thing." The mysterious man sneered. His laughter was like an ice knife ruthlessly cutting through glass, sharp and piercing, echoing in the silent room and causing a stinging sensation in the ears. His laughter was filled with disdain and ridicule, as if our actions were as childish and ridiculous as children's games in his eyes.
Luo Chen took a step forward, his stride firm and powerful, as if to demonstrate his resolve to the mysterious figure. "We've endured numerous trials to reach this point. If this object falls into the hands of evil, it will bring great disaster." His voice was steady and powerful, each word like a nail, firmly driven into the air filled with uncertainty.
The mysterious figure raised his head slightly, and beneath his hood, a pair of red eyes flickered. Like burning flames, they shone dangerously in the darkness. Even that faint glow was enough to make us feel an invisible pressure. "Do you think those trials prove your qualifications? They were merely basic tests." His words were still filled with contempt, as if everything we had experienced was insignificant in his eyes.
"So what do you want?" I asked impatiently, my voice unconsciously rising. The prolonged tension and feeling of being slighted had stirred a nameless fire within me. Although I knew the wisest option was to remain calm in the face of this mysterious and powerful enemy, I still struggled to contain my emotions.
"If you want to take this item, you must pass my test." The mysterious man said coldly. His voice was without a trace of emotion, like a piece of cold stone, hard and ruthless.
"What test?" Luo Chen asked, his eyes fixed on the mysterious man, full of vigilance and curiosity.
The mysterious figure slowly raised his hand, hidden within the sleeve of his black robe. Only a pale hand could be seen reaching out from the darkness. A black light emanated from his hand, like a black python, snaking forward and rapidly forming a vast magic circle before us. This magic circle exuded a powerful dark aura, a force that surged toward us like a dark tide. The runes within the circle flickered continuously, their light like countless evil eyes, blinking in the darkness, as if foreshadowing impending danger, a chilling feeling.
"You must stay in this magic circle for the time of an incense stick and resist all kinds of attacks from the circle. If you fail, you will never be able to leave this room." The mysterious man said calmly. His voice was like the judgment of the god of death, leaving no room for negotiation.
I gazed at the magic circle, my heart filled with worry. It resembled a vast, dark vortex, emitting a powerful and dangerous aura. Simply standing before it, I could feel an invisible force tugging at my soul. The runes within the circle shimmered with an eerie light, seemingly summoning the sinister forces of the darkness.
"We accept the challenge." Luo Chen said firmly. There was no fear in his eyes, only firm determination.
Without hesitation, we entered the magic circle. As soon as we entered, it sprang into action, like an awakened demon. Bolts of black lightning shot out from the circle, like sharp black arrows, slashing towards us with destructive force. I swiftly swung my sword, drawing silver streaks through the air, attempting to deflect the lightning. Each collision between sword and lightning produced a dazzling flash and a sharp crack, a sound like the ripping of metal that echoed in my ears. Luo Chen swiftly waved his wand, muttering something to himself. Following his incantation, a magical shield formed around us. The shield, like a transparent glass dome, emanated a soft blue light, enveloping us.
Lightning struck the shield repeatedly, making a sizzling sound like hot oil dripping onto a hot pan. Each impact caused the shield to flicker, and the flickering light seemed to be the shield struggling in pain, threatening to break at any moment.
"This won't work. We have to take the initiative." I shouted loudly, my voice still clearly audible amidst the roar of the magic circle. I knew that if we just passively defended, we would sooner or later be overwhelmed by the magic circle's attacks.
Luo Chen nodded, a flicker of determination in his eyes. He concentrated on chanting a spell, the words flowing slowly from his mouth like an ancient ballad. As the spell continued, a beam of white light shot out from his wand, like holy moonlight, rushing toward the magic circle's energy source. I seized the opportunity to rush toward the lightning's origin, my eyes fixed on the runes, as if staring at a group of hateful enemies. I gripped the sword tightly with both hands and swung it with all my strength at the runes, sending sparks flying as the blade collided with the runes.
However, the magic circle's attack intensified. Flames erupted from the circle, like red devil's tongues, slashing towards us with fangs and claws, accompanied by lightning. The intense heat of the flames assaulted my face, making me feel like I was in a furnace.
"Be careful!" Luo Chen shouted loudly, with a hint of anxiety in his voice.
I was instantly enveloped by flames, which clung to me like a hungry beast. I felt a scorching heat surge against my face, my skin aching as if being pricked by countless needles. I rolled frantically on the ground, trying to extinguish the flames. Thick smoke billowed around me. Luo Chen increased the magic power of his shield, but his face grew paler. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, and his body trembled slightly from the excessive consumption of magic power.
Just when we were about to lose our grip, I suddenly noticed a faint glimmer in the corner of the magic circle. It seemed so insignificant amidst the darkness and chaos, but it was like a ray of light in the darkness. I suddenly thought, thinking it might be a weakness in the magic circle.
"Luo Chen, look there!" I pointed at the flashing spot and shouted with all my strength, my voice a little hoarse due to the thick smoke.
Luo Chen's eyes lit up when he saw this. As if grasping a lifeline, he quickly concentrated his magic power and fired a beam of magic at the flashing point. The beam, like a blue laser, shot straight towards the flashing point. After the beam struck the flashing point, the magic circle suddenly trembled, like a wounded beast roaring in pain. The attack also slowed down. The attack, once like a violent storm, now resembled a weakened storm. Although still fierce, it had a chance to breathe.
We seized this opportunity and attacked the glint even more fiercely. I rushed toward the glint once more, my sword in hand like a weapon of revenge, striking again and again. Luo Chen also continuously fired magical beams, his wand waving faster and faster, his incantations chanting more and more rapidly. Finally, under our combined attack, the magic circle's light gradually dimmed, like a candle about to go out. Finally, the magic circle's light disappeared completely, and the surrounding darkness receded slightly. We finally escaped the terrible attack for a while.
"You have passed this level, but there is still the next test." The mysterious man said coldly, his voice still without any emotion, as if everything we did was just within his expectations.
Luo Chen and I exchanged a glance, our eyes filled with exhaustion, yet also with a resolute resolve. Though we were exhausted, our bodies drained of strength, we knew we couldn't give up. This mysterious object was crucial to stopping the spread of evil. We shouldered a grave mission, and no matter how many difficulties lay ahead, we must forge ahead courageously.
"What's the next test?" I asked, my voice a little weak but still full of determination.
The mysterious figure didn't answer. He raised his hand again, and suddenly, many phantoms appeared in the room. They looked exactly like us, in both appearance and clothing, like ourselves reflected in a mirror. However, their eyes were filled with malice, a veiled darkness that emanated from them, sending chills down one's spine.
"You must find your true self from these phantoms and eliminate all the phantoms. If you make a mistake, you will be eliminated by the phantoms." said the mysterious man, his voice echoing in the room full of phantoms, and every word sounded like a cold warning.
I stared at the phantoms, feeling lost. They looked so much like us, like perfect replicas. Their movements, expressions, even their breathing patterns were identical to ours, making it impossible to tell them apart. I felt like I was in a maze of mirrors, with no real way out.
"What should we do?" I asked Luo Chen in a low voice, with a hint of helplessness in my voice.
Luo Chen pondered for a moment, his brow furrowed slightly, his eyes fixed on the phantoms, as if searching for something. After a moment, he said, "I have a plan. We can attack each other. The real us won't hurt each other."
I nodded. While this method was somewhat risky, under the circumstances, there seemed no better option. We began attacking the phantoms, and like enraged beasts, they immediately fought back. For a moment, the room was filled with the light of swords and magic. The cold gleam of swords and the colorful light of magic intertwined, forming a gorgeous yet dangerous scene.
During the attack, I noticed that some of the phantoms' movements were jerky, and their attacks lacked power. I figured they weren't the real us. I began to focus on those with jerky movements. My sword, like a scythe reaping life, slashed at them again and again. Luo Chen used the same method, his wand blasting magical beams to accurately strike those he identified as phantoms. Slowly, the number of phantoms dwindled.
Finally, only a few phantoms remained. Luo Chen and I exchanged glances, each revealing a look of resolve and trust. Then, we simultaneously charged at the remaining phantoms. After a fierce battle, we finally annihilated them all. Under our attack, they vanished like bubbles, leaving no trace.
"Very good, you have passed all the tests." said the mysterious man. His voice was no longer so cold, and seemed to have a hint of imperceptible appreciation.
"Can we take this item away then?" I asked, my heart full of anticipation.
The mysterious figure slowly approached the stone platform, his steps light and slow, as if he were performing a sacred ritual. He picked up the object, emanating powerful magic. In his hand, it shone even brighter, as if welcoming its new owner. He slowly handed it to me, saying, "Take it. I hope you can truly stop the spread of evil."
I accepted the item, my heart overflowing with gratitude. It radiated a warm, magical energy in my hands, as if telling me of its purpose and responsibility. "Thank you," I said sincerely.
The mysterious man nodded, then disappeared into the shadows of the room like a gust of wind, leaving behind only silence and the mysterious object that exuded hope in our hands.
"Let's get out of here quickly." Luo Chen said, with a hint of urgency in his voice.
We carried our belongings, feeling both nervous and excited, and walked out of the sealed room, moving resolutely towards our next goal. The unknown future might still be filled with countless dangers and challenges, but we were ready, for we shouldered the important mission of stopping the spread of evil.
