Witch Special
Chapter 13: I’ve been slacking off so much that I can’t stand it anymore at the company
When Lin Zhenxi became a special correspondent, she chose a wand as her starting weapon. Although her initial thought was simply that "waving a wand and casting spells was cool and stylish," it's undeniable that this choice provided Lin Zhenxi with a huge advantage in her future work. The wand's versatile spellcasting capabilities allowed Lin Zhenxi to handle a wide variety of situations with ease, something her colleagues, who had chosen technologically advanced equipment as their starting weapons, clearly couldn't do.
Technological weapons are often specialized in a certain area, such as electromagnetism, mechanics, and dynamics. Although they are as powerful as gods in specific fields, they also have great limitations.
However, versatility is only relative. Just as it's impossible for a person to master all knowledge, Lin Zhenxi's wand also has its shortcomings. Healing ability is one of the missing pieces of the puzzle.
This is because Lin Zhenxi's wand is made of elderberry, and its core is a single tail feather from the ominous Thestral. Both items are imbued with a strong ominous aura, focusing on killing rather than healing. Therefore, when facing an enemy, Lin Zhenxi is a skilled attacker, both offensively and defensively. However, when faced with a wounded individual requiring treatment, Lin Zhenxi's wand magic can only clean the wound briefly, making it appear more tidy. Like... cleaning a wound? And that's without disinfection or sterilization. In short, if it were just a minor wound, it would be fine, but the cat-beast currently has too many wounds for Lin Zhenxi's wand alone to heal.
Therefore, she needed to borrow power other than the wand, even if that was not what she wanted.
Wait...it seems there really is another way. Lin Zhenxi suddenly slapped his head and thought of a perfect way to prevent others from discovering that he had hurt an alien.
Since the cat beastman is so conspicuous, why not make it less conspicuous? A battered and bruised cat beastman would certainly attract attention, but what if it were an injured cat trapped in a cage and about to be taken to the vet?
That's it, transform the cat beastman! This is something Lin Zhenxi can do, and it's even something she's very good at.
In this way, Lin Zhenxi will not need to switch her power system, and can avoid some things that make her very resistant from happening. It is simply a foolproof plan, perfect!
The Human Transfiguration Charm is a high-level wand magic spell, far beyond the realm of being simplified into a single incantation, at least not with Lin Zhenxi's current magical proficiency. To perfectly and permanently transform an adult-sized cat-beast into a cat, Lin Zhenxi needed to concentrate on wielding his wand while ensuring an unimpeded flow of his own magical power, activating the corresponding runes within the wand in sequence and ultimately successfully unleashing the Transfiguration Charm.
The cat-beast watched Lin Zhenxi's mysterious words as he began to wave his wand at him again, feeling terrified. The previous night and the previous experience had already left a deep psychological scar on him. Unsure of what kind of sorcery Lin Zhenxi was about to unleash on him, he instinctively wanted to flee. However, his body, overcome by sheer terror, refused to obey, leaving him flailing about on the ground like a cat in a nightmare, unable to stand.
Then, Lin Zhenxi's magic was complete. She pointed her wand downward at the cat-beast, and it was enveloped in a white light. Its body was constantly kneaded, squeezed, shrunk, and deformed within this white light. Finally, in a manner that completely defied the laws of physics regarding the conservation of mass, the nearly 100-pound cat-beast was transformed by Lin Zhenxi into a mere cat weighing only a few pounds.
Oh, it's still striped. The stripes on its tail when it was in human form have now spread all over its body.
Experiencing the terrifying forced compression of its muscles and bones, and feeling the strange shift in its perspective, the cat-beast's emotions became even more unstable. But before it could react drastically, Lin Zhenxi used the wisteria vines entwined on the trees beside the trail to tie it up. As the vines continued to grow, a conveniently portable wicker cat cage appeared on the ground, enclosing the terrified meowing cat.
"Don't scream. I'll take you to find Karina." Lin Zhenxi lifted the handle of the cat cage and spoke slowly to the tabby cat that was so scared that it had started to urinate.
But it was obvious that her words did not help to ease the cat beastman's fear. It continued to scream with its equally deformed vocal cords, making a shrill noise.
Finally, Lin Zhenxi was annoyed by the noise and simply sealed the cat's mouth silently.
The world suddenly became quiet.
Next, Lin Zhenxi cleaned up the traces around him, used his personal terminal to report the damage of the four floating ball lights to the municipal government, then picked up the cat cage that had no door at all and walked towards the company.
---------------
There are quite a lot of elderly people walking their birds in bird cages in the park, but it is rare to see people carrying cat cages. However, they are not particularly eye-catching, so Lin Zhenxi arrived at the company smoothly without any incidents.
After entering the company's service hall, Lin Zhenxi took the cat cage and found the cat-orc customer service representative from yesterday and placed the cat cage in front of her.
"They are from the same group as yesterday. Please receive them."
"Hmm...?" The cat-orc stared at the tabby cat lying in the cage as if dead. He shook his ears and a big question mark seemed to appear on his furry head.
Lin Zhenxi slapped her forehead, she forgot to break the spell.
She placed the cat cage on the ground, then pulled out her wand and gently waved it, dispelling all the magical effects she had cast on the two objects. The cage instantly transformed into several slender vines, and the cat inside, like a balloon connected to an inflatable port, rapidly expanded in size. In the blink of an eye, a cat-beast appeared lying on its back at Lin Zhenxi's feet.
"Now you understand, it's here to look for the one from yesterday. I'll leave it to you."
After saying that, Lin Zhenxi ignored the dumbfounded cat-beast customer service representative and simply walked away. As for how the customer service representative managed to appease the cat-beast, who, despite his reckless personality, seemed to have suffered a great deal of mental trauma, that was not her concern.
She went back to the office.
---------------
But this time, her work was interrupted. It was a rare and long time since she received a work-related notification.
Company announcements were usually sent via email. While Lin Zhenxi might be a witch who wielded magic, she was still a young person living in modern society, so it made sense that she wouldn't be able to use electronic devices. Therefore, the cute attribute that witches inevitably clash with electronic devices didn't exist in Lin Zhenxi.
The company notified Lin Zhenxi to go to the resettlement center, but did not tell her what to do, just that she should go there.
It was a nonsensical order, but the response level was very high, requiring deployment within two hours, second only to the emergency response that required immediate action.
There was no other way, so Lin Zhenxi had to put away the magic circle diagram that he had just filled with two magic runes. He also took away the donut that the black cat was holding in his arms and chewing on, then carried the cat's skin by the scruff of its neck and left the office.
The cat took a reluctant look at the donuts that Lin Zhenxi casually put back into the snack box, lowered its limbs, meowed softly, and gave up resistance.
Lin Zhenxi rarely visited the resettlement center. To be more precise, in the ten years since she joined the company, she'd only been there once, when she was first getting acquainted with the company's environment, and hadn't been there since. As the name suggests, this place is for those from other worlds who haven't yet adapted to the human world and need to be cared for and educated. Those who have just arrived in this world and are still struggling to adapt are placed in the resettlement center, where they're forced to learn the common sense of the human world. Only when they're able to live independently are they allowed to graduate and, under the company's arrangement, take up recommended positions, becoming a humble cog in Earth civilization, contributing their own strength to its development and growth.
It wouldn't matter if it was called a training center, or something more impressive. Ultimately, it was a place where aliens were taught how to integrate into human society. It was also the "school" that all aliens sent to the company had to graduate from.
Lin Zhenxi recalled his impression of the resettlement center from the depths of his mind, and after a long journey, he finally arrived at the gate of the resettlement center.
The company's internal areas are essentially separate entities, akin to self-contained spaces, connected by portals, much like the reception hall, accessible by simply touching any exterior wall. Traditional directions don't exist here. To avoid getting lost, one must either memorize the correspondence between the various portals, at least the ones one frequently uses, as if they were the bathroom. Alternatively, one can simply stop any passing autonomous robot and ask for directions.
Well, most people rely on these autonomous robot guides throughout the company to avoid getting lost. Among these people is Lin Zhenxi.
There was nothing she could do. Her memory of the resettlement center had long since faded; it wasn't a significant place anyway. She only knew there was such a place within the company, but she had long forgotten how to get there.
