Oritis in the world of Detective Conan

Chapter 56: The Shadow of Belstein (Part 2)

As soon as they walked out of Mandala's residence, they saw an old man wandering here.

"Hello, we are tourists visiting the island and have a few questions to ask you..." Mao Lilan took the initiative to greet the old man.

"Oh, welcome, guests from afar, my name is Money Tree." Money Tree stopped and looked at the few people.

Conan silently recorded it in his little notebook. He remembered that the money tree seemed to symbolize prosperity and wealth?

The money tree complained to the others, "Hmph! When I was young, I also distributed those plant specimens for the high priest. You've never experienced the fragrance of those specimens...it made me feel twenty years younger! Then I was ostracized and had to come here to be a guard. Hmph, that damn guy, hasn't he been replaced by the tuberose now?"

"Grandpa, did the tuberose come to the island later?" Conan immediately asked the money tree.

"Oh, of course. He looked like a melancholy young man when he landed on the island, and then..." Money Tree's expression suddenly became alert. "Wait, you look like you're here to gather information? No, I have to report to the high priest."

Seeing the money tree leave angrily, Maori Kogoro couldn't help complaining: "What kind of person is this? He's so crazy."

In order to prevent someone from stopping them from continuing their investigation, Conan suggested searching Mandala's residence again. However, after entering the house again, Maori Kogoro found another person in the house.

"who is it?"

A woman wearing a black coat, black leather pants and black gloves, looking very capable, appeared in front of several people.

"It's Miss Acorus. I remember she was a tourist who came to the island with us." Xiaolan recognized Acorus's identity.

"What are you doing here?" Kogoro Mouri asked in a bad tone.

"Who are you? Why are you questioning me?"

"We received a letter of authorization, entrusting us to investigate the murder that occurred here." Xiaolan handed the letter of authorization to Changpu.

Ayame glanced at the letter of commission, she moved her eyes left and right to look at the three people, and finally set her sights on Conan.

"I also received a letter of commission, but I must keep the matter under investigation confidential." Ayame raised a letter of commission in her hand, and Conan noticed that the wax seal on the letter was red.

Conan couldn't help but feel curious about the contents of Ayame's letter, but also a little worried. After all, this meant that someone from Oletus's supervisor camp had also been sent over.

"What? A guy who is sneaky and refuses to speak clearly." Kogoro Mouri was a little unhappy.

"Whatever you think, I have to continue my investigation." Acorus said as he took off his gloves, put on another clean pair and touched the bookcase beside him.

Conan noticed that Ayame's fingertips were all purple.

"This diary contains some observation records about the plants on Bearstein Island." Acorus silently closed the diary.

Xiaolan noticed the oil painting hanging nearby.

"That's The Death of Alcestis, a famous Greek tragicomedy," Acorus explained.

"A king was sentenced to death by the goddess of fate for his crimes. The sun god offered the king a chance to live, but someone had to die in his place. The king's parents, brothers and sisters all retreated, but his wife Alcestis stood up."

"Just before going to the underworld, the goddess of fate asked Alcestis, are you really willing?"

"After giving an affirmative answer, Alcestis ran to the underworld without looking back. Hercules heard about this and rescued her from the underworld. The king was so excited to see his wife who had returned from the dead that he shook her hand."

"But Alcestis remained silent forever and never uttered a word again."

Xiaolan couldn't help but feel sorry for this story: "If only Alcestis could still speak."

Maori Kogoro has a different view on this story: "How can something like resurrection from the dead be without a price?"

Conan noticed that there seemed to be some purple marks on the oil painting, which emitted a strange fragrance, not like paint.

After a while, Money Tree came hurriedly and shouted at the few people, driving them out.

The few of them had no choice but to go to where the tourists were staying. Before they parted, Ayame squatted down and suggested to Conan that they could conduct an investigation together tomorrow.

The next day, several people decided to find the residents of the island to find out what was going on.

The group walked to a flower field, and Acorus pointed out a man who was smelling the flowers. He was the islander Trumpet Creeper, an ardent supporter of the high priest, and his flower language was honor and prestige.

Conan took the initiative to approach and said, "Hey, big brother, do you know where I can meet that beautiful priestess?"

Trumpet Creeper was very alert: "The High Priest never sees anyone!"

"But a murder recently occurred on the island, which may have unnecessary impact on the high priest. We are here to investigate." Xiaolan stepped forward and spoke.

"The case is over and the murderer has confessed! Go away, don't even think about disturbing the high priest!" Ling Xiaohua gradually became irritable and drove away several people.

"That guy is too violent." Kogoro Mouri complained breathlessly after running out.

Ayame was taking notes on another islander's research at the time. Conan came over curiously, and Ayame took the initiative to disclose the information she had found:

"Beilstein was originally a lifeless island, where the islanders made their living by farming or fishing."

"But after the high priest arrived, everything changed. Flowers with a strange fragrance spread across the island, and the islanders became more and more devoted to plants. Visitors to the island would hold mysterious ceremonies under the guidance of the high priest."

Verbena, the informant, spoke softly, "Without the High Priest's permission, no one will bring the case to you. Tuberose has the High Priest's token on him, and he relies on that to issue orders for the High Priest."

"Besides, he often visits Miss Mandala's cell. He must have bad intentions. I believe she was wrongly accused, but I don't have the ability to help her clear her name."

Verbena said and left.

"It seems we have to talk to the high priest about this matter." Acorus stroked his chin and thought.

When we arrived at the bridge in front of the high priest's residence, we saw a figure guarding the bridge.

"Every year, curious people come to the high priest's residence to find out what's going on."

"I'm Dahlia, responsible for guarding the High Priest's residence. Please go back. There are no plant specimens to send this year."

Dahlia's words seemed like a betrayal. Thinking this, Conan suddenly saw Tuberose walking towards him from the other side of the bridge.

"The high priestess is so tolerant, but you treat her guests so rudely? Don't you know that the prosperity of Bearstein cannot be separated from their help?" Tuberose attacked Dahlia.

"Tuber-jasmine, what right do you have to boss me around?" Dahlia was clearly unconvinced.

Tuberose took out a lavender rosemary flower from her bosom and waved it in front of Dahlia. Dahlia immediately became furious: "How did you get the high priest's token? Before you came, the person she trusted the most was me!"

With that, Dahlia left angrily.

"Okay, everyone, it's really not convenient for the high priest to see outsiders."

Conan asked, not giving up, "Can we obtain the same token from the high priest?"

Tuberose's voice suddenly grew low. He glanced at the group from beneath his mask and spoke sinisterly, "You're here to investigate that case, right?"

Several people suddenly became nervous.
