The Great Doctor Girl
Chapter 25: The old love is still there, but it is hard to escape the inner demon
The afternoon sun filtered through the dappled leaves, casting patches of golden light across the café floor. Huang Junze walked into the café with a sense of trepidation. The rich aroma of coffee and soft music filled the air. Sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting brilliant streaks of light and shadow across the floor.
In the corner of the cafe, a figure so familiar that it made his heart beat faster came into view.
That's Su Jingyan.
She was as elegant and dignified as ever, dressed in a well-cut black suit and skirt suit, the simple design yet delicate and refined. Her features were still exquisite, and her deep eyes held a hint of a faint, yet heartbreaking sadness, which was the fatal temptation that made Huang Junze irresistible back then.
He stood there, a bit bewildered for a moment, staring blankly at her as she slowly smiled back at him. At that moment, time seemed to flow backwards, and every memory of their past flooded back into his mind like a tide. He couldn't deny that his complex feelings for Su Jingyan hadn't completely faded. Like a dormant seed, it began to stir the moment she appeared.
"Junze, long time no see." Her voice was low and gentle, with a familiar warmth, as if instantly pulling him back to those beautiful times.
Huang Junze's throat tightened slightly. Even though he had a thousand words in his heart, they were stuck in his throat at this moment, unable to speak. He nodded with difficulty, then slowly sat down, looking at the woman in front of him with a complicated and tangled gaze.
"Why did you come back suddenly?" He finally mustered up the courage to speak, but his voice was a little hoarse, with a hint of imperceptible vigilance and deep confusion.
Su Jingyan lowered her eyelids, her slender fingertips gently cradling the coffee cup in her hands, her hands as graceful as a carefully crafted work of art. She smiled faintly and said casually, "I'm back home to take care of some things. I heard you were getting married, so..." The intentional, meaningful pause in her words pierced Huang Junze's heart like a sharp needle, causing his heart to tighten.
"So you came back to take a look?" Huang Junze frowned, his inner defenses had been shaken slightly without him realizing it. He tried hard to remain calm, but found that his voice still revealed a hint of panic that was difficult to conceal.
She raised her head, a complicated look in her eyes: "Junze, are you really planning to marry her? Are you sure you have really let go of the good times we had in the past?"
This sentence was like a bombshell, striking Huang Junze's most vulnerable spot. He had asked himself the same question countless times in the dead of night. My presence had indeed helped him gradually break free from the shadows of the past, allowing him to once again feel the warmth of life and the beauty of love. But Su Jingyan was like a ghost deep in his heart, constantly surfacing and making him doubt his sincerity.
"You left without saying a word back then, so why did you come back?" There was a hint of anger and helplessness in Huang Junze's voice, and his eyes were full of pain and confusion, as if he was a trapped beast in the dark.
"I had no choice." There was a hint of grievance and helplessness in Su Jingyan's voice, and a trace of tears flashed in her eyes, as if she was telling her own difficulties, but in Huang Junze's eyes, all this seemed so false and powerless.
Su Jingyan looked at Huang Junze's expression, and the corners of her mouth curled up slightly, revealing a barely perceptible smile. She knew Huang Junze too well, and she knew that every word and every action of hers could accurately pluck the most sensitive chord in his heart.
"Junze, you know, I have never really left you. No matter what happened over the years, you still have me in your heart, right?" Her voice was as soft as a dream talk, like a whisper full of temptation, eroding Huang Junze's reason and determination bit by bit.
Huang Junze's heart suddenly contracted. He wanted to refuse, wanted to tell her that everything was over and that he loved me now. But when the words came to his lips, they seemed to be under a spell and he couldn't say them.
It was already evening when Huang Junze, distraught, returned to his villa. The sunset glowed like a blazing flame, tinting the sky crimson. Yet, this vibrant color couldn't warm his already frozen heart. The trees surrounding the villa swayed in the evening breeze, rustling as if whispering his inner sorrow.
I waited for him quietly in the living room, a book in my hand, my eyes drifting to the door from time to time. When I heard the sound of the door lock turning, the feeling of unease in my heart surged out again like a tide.
He walked in slowly, with a trace of fatigue and hesitation that was hard to conceal on his face. His eyes deliberately avoided mine, as if he didn't dare to look me in the eye.
"You're back." I tried to force a smile and looked at him. My tone was as gentle as usual, but there was a hint of imperceptible temptation.
Huang Junze nodded slightly, his movements somewhat mechanical and stiff. He took off his coat, tossed it on the sofa beside him, and simply replied, "Yeah, a little tired."
His answers were brief and cold. He didn't share his day's experiences with me as usual, nor did he offer any extra explanations or concern. A sense of unease was brewing within me, but I suppressed it and didn't ask any further questions.
He hurried into the study and slammed the door, leaving me sitting alone in the living room with a suffocating silence in the air.
My thoughts were a tangled mess, unable to calm down. I wasn't stupid; my keen intuition told me this was more than just tiredness. Huang Junze's emotions were clearly disturbed by something, and it was most likely related to his past relationships.
I sighed softly, trying to keep my expression calm, not letting my inner turmoil show on my face. I wouldn't rush to ask questions, nor would I easily reveal my inner uneasiness.
This storm has not yet fully emerged. I must remain calm and wait for the moment when he is willing to open his heart to me.
In his study, Huang Junze stood by the window, gazing at the distant night sky. His hands were clenched into fists, resting on the windowsill, his knuckles white from the strain. Su Jingyan's words echoed in his mind, swirling like a spell.
"Junze, are you sure you've let it go?"
Had he let it go? He himself didn't know the answer. My presence, like a ray of warm sunshine on a winter's day, illuminated his dark, cold world, allowing him to once again feel the warmth of life and the sweetness of love. But Su Jingyan's shadow kept inadvertently intruding into his thoughts, and the unforgettable love and pain he once felt made it difficult for him to let go.
"I can't let her..."
"Did she come back for me?"
Huang Junze muttered silently, his mind a tangled mess, unable to untangle. Su Jingyan's return intensified his inner struggle, the emotions like cold thorns of ice piercing his heart as it struggled to heal. I am his current lover, and my kindness, gentleness, and determination are gradually healing his once deeply wounded heart. But Su Jingyan's past existence, like an invisible shackle, binds him tightly, preventing him from completely escaping the past.
My gentle yet resolute face appeared before his eyes. I had risked everything to heal him, and slowly melted the iceberg in his heart. But now, Su Jingyan's appearance had once again awakened the dormant demon in his heart, plunging him into endless contradictions and entanglements.
My kindness warmed him, but Su Jingyan's return reignited his inner confusion. He began to wonder: Was his feeling for me born of gratitude or true love? His recent apathy wasn't what he wanted, but whenever he thought of Su Jingyan's words, the phrase "Have you truly let go?" kept echoing in his mind.
Late at night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. A faint noise coming from the study next door was particularly clear in the quiet night. My heart grew heavier. Although Huang Junze didn't say anything to me, my keen insight as a doctor told me that he was experiencing a huge emotional turmoil.
Although I had never heard Su Jingyan's name from his mouth, from his subtle movements, I had already sensed that the white moonlight that had once been buried deep in his heart had quietly returned. Her appearance undoubtedly opened a new rift between us.
Huang Junze's eyes were no longer focused on me, and his movements became hesitant and cold. Although he didn't show any unusual emotions to me, I knew clearly that a part of him had begun to waver.
This wavering pains me, but I won't be foolish enough to rush into questioning. I know that at this point, pressing matters will only make matters worse. Huang Junze is struggling internally; he needs time. All I can do is wait. Wait for him to open up to me about his confusion, or for that distance to slowly reveal itself.
The next morning, Huang Junze was as silent as he had been the night before. He sat at the table eating breakfast, his eyes never meeting mine. He quickly drank a few sips of coffee and then left, making an excuse that he had something to do.
I sat at the dining table, watching him walk away, the uneasiness in my heart growing stronger. Even though we were planning our wedding, I could feel something invisible pulling us apart.
The memories of our wedding photos no longer feel sweet, but rather like a patch of bleak memories. The scenes of us holding hands and smiling together during the photo shoot have gradually been replaced by a heavy emotion.
I know that Huang Junze hasn't completely let go of the past. Although he once opened his heart to me, confessing how he was hurt by Su Jingyan and how he slowly regained his trust in love in front of me, I still know that the wound has not truly healed.
It was already evening when Huang Junze returned home from outside. He looked normal, but there was still an unconcealable weariness and irritation between his brows. We exchanged a few brief pleasantries, and the atmosphere remained strangely dull.
I chose not to ask further questions, not because I didn't see the problem, but because I knew Huang Junze was not ready to face this emotional storm. And I also needed time to think about how I should deal with all this.
Late at night, I watched Huang Junze still sitting in his study, gazing out the window at the night sky, seemingly lost in deep thought. His phone lay on the table, a few unread messages flickering across the screen. I quietly walked over, handing him a glass of milk without disturbing him.
Faintly, I caught a glimpse of that familiar name - Su Jingyan.
It was indeed her. My suspicions were finally confirmed. This woman had returned, and her return was quietly shaking Huang Junze's heart.
I took a deep breath, suppressed the complex emotions within, and silently walked back to my room. Unease filled my heart, but I told myself I couldn't rush into anything. This was a long battle, and I needed patience and wisdom.
The preparations for the wedding were still going on in an orderly manner, but the relationship between Huang Junze and I was like a taut string that could break at any time.
