God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 31 A New Threat Approaches
The campus had returned to its peaceful state. The streetlights cast a soft glow, the shadows of the trees swayed, and everything seemed so peaceful. The air was filled with the fragrance of the earth, tinged with the coolness of the night breeze.
Chu Feng suddenly stopped.
"Wait..." he whispered, his gaze fixed on the mountain behind him, his brow furrowed. He sensed a faint, almost imperceptible evil aura, a presence so deeply hidden, like a venomous snake lurking in the shadows, waiting for its moment to strike. Yet Chu Feng could clearly sense its presence... This evil aura seemed... ready to stir...
Pan Yue noticed Chu Feng's strangeness, followed his gaze, and asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"
"I feel... there is still some evil energy left." Chu Feng said in a serious tone and clenched his fists.
Pan Yue felt it carefully but found nothing. "It might be residual energy fluctuations. Don't be too nervous," he said soothingly.
Chu Feng shook his head, his uneasiness growing stronger. He didn't believe his feelings were wrong. Although the evil spirit had been destroyed, he couldn't ignore this lingering chill.
The next morning, Chu Feng went to Principal Guo and told him about his concerns. However, Principal Guo interrupted him impatiently, "Chu Feng, I know you're enthusiastic, but you need to know when to stop. Yesterday's events were already enough of a headache. I hope you won't create more panic."
Principal Guo was criticized by his superiors for his handling of the previous evil spirit incident. He blamed it all on Chu Feng, believing that it was Chu Feng's meddling that caused the matter to escalate.
"But Principal, I really feel..."
"That's enough!" Principal Guo said sternly, "If you find anything unusual again, report it to me first. Don't act on your own! Do you understand?"
Chu Feng's actions were greatly restricted, which made him feel extremely frustrated. He knew that if he left it alone, something even more terrible would probably happen.
After class, several students gathered around him. "Student Chu Feng, we believe you! There must be something wrong in the back mountain!"
"Yeah, we all feel like there's something weird there," another student agreed.
These students had all personally experienced incidents involving evil spirits before, and they trusted Chu Feng far more than they trusted the principal.
"Thank you." Chu Feng nodded gratefully, and hope rekindled in his heart. He looked at these trusting eyes and knew that he could not let them down.
"Let's go to the back mountain together." A student suggested.
"No," Chu Feng shook his head, "The principal doesn't allow us to go to the back mountain anymore."
"What should we do then?" The students were a little disappointed.
Chu Feng gazed at the distant mountains shrouded in mist, his eyes determined. "I'll find a way," he whispered, his tone filled with unquestionable determination. Night fell, and Chu Feng was alone... Night fell, and Chu Feng stood alone at the window of his dormitory, gazing at the distant mountains shrouded in mist, his eyes complex. Principal Guo's warning and his inner uneasiness left him torn. He knew he couldn't disobey the principal's orders, but he couldn't ignore the lurking danger either.
At this moment, there was a gentle knock on the dormitory door. Chu Feng opened the door and saw several students standing outside with some hesitation on their faces.
"Student Chu Feng," one of the students said with courage, "We know the principal doesn't want you to go to the back mountain anymore, but... we believe in you!"
"Right," another student echoed, "We all think there's still trouble in the back mountain, and you're the only one who can protect us!"
Hearing these words of trust, Chu Feng felt a surge of warmth in his heart. These students had witnessed the horror of evil spirits firsthand, yet they still chose to trust him. This gave him an immense sense of responsibility.
"Thank you," Chu Feng took a deep breath, his eyes becoming firm, "I'll find a way."
He knew he couldn't let down the students, nor could he allow the hidden dangers to threaten the safety of the campus again. A force surged from the depths of his heart, dispelling his previous hesitation and uneasiness, and filling him with motivation.
The next day, Chu Feng quietly began his investigation on campus. He carefully observed his surroundings, keeping an eye out for any signs of anomaly. He noticed something was amiss with the school library lately. A faint, cold aura permeated the air, making him feel uncomfortable.
However, Chu Feng's actions did not escape the attention of Teacher Su. Teacher Su had always been prejudiced against Chu Feng, believing him to be a troublemaker. Seeing Chu Feng investigating around the campus again, she immediately ran to complain to the principal.
"Principal, Chu Feng is sneaking around campus again!" Teacher Su said angrily, "He's disrupting the normal teaching order!"
Principal Guo frowned when he heard Teacher Su's complaint. He was also very dissatisfied with Chu Feng's behavior and thought that he was deliberately challenging his authority.
"I understand," Principal Guo said in a cold tone, "I'll take care of it."
Chu Feng didn't know that Teacher Su had already complained to the principal. He remained focused on his investigation, his unease growing stronger. He sensed that the evil spirit lurking near the library was gradually gaining strength.
In the evening, Chu Feng found Pan Yue and told him his discovery.
"Library?" Pan Yue frowned. "How could there be..."
"I'm not sure," Chu Feng shook his head, "but I feel like there's definitely something wrong there."
"Then what should we do?" Pan Yue asked.
Chu Feng looked around and said in a low voice, "Let's sneak in at night and take a look."
Pan Yue nodded, knowing that this was the only way at the moment. They had to avoid the interference of the principal and Teacher Su in order to find out the truth.
It was late at night, and the campus was hushed. Chu Feng and Pan Yue quietly arrived at the library entrance... Chu Feng reached out and pushed the door, only to find it locked. "Looks like we'll have to find another way in," he whispered, his gaze fixed on the window on the second floor of the library...
The second-floor window was half-open, and a chilly air seeped through the crack, further solidifying Chu Feng's judgment. They nimbly climbed through the window under the cover of darkness. The library was completely dark, save for a few rays of moonlight filtering through the window, illuminating the dusty bookshelves and adding a touch of eeriness.
"Be careful," Chu Feng whispered, tightening his grip on his custom-made dagger. Pan Yue pulled a small detector from his backpack. A red dot flashed on the screen, indicating the concentration of evil energy, guiding their direction.
As they entered the library, the chill in the air grew stronger, and the books on the shelves seemed to tremble faintly. Suddenly, a heavy ancient tome took flight, its pages rustling and rustling with a harsh, grinding sound. Immediately afterwards, more books flew from the shelves, twisting and distorting in the air, transforming into tiny monsters with sharp teeth and claws. They hissed and leaped towards Chu Feng and Pan Yue.
"These are books contaminated by evil spirits!" Pan Yue exclaimed, and quickly stepped back, with a short sword flashing with cold light in his hand.
Chu Feng reacted quickly, wielding his dagger with a burst of cold light, cutting down the attacking book monsters one by one. However, these book monsters were so numerous, seemingly endless, that they soon surrounded Chu Feng.
"Chu Feng!" Pan Yue shouted anxiously. He wanted to go forward to support, but he was entangled by several book monsters and could not escape for a while.
Chu Feng, surrounded by the book monsters, felt the pressure double. Although these book monsters were not strong individually, their sheer number made it difficult for him to resist. Just when he was about to collapse, Pan Yue suddenly shouted, "Chu Feng, look up!"
Chu Feng looked up and saw a huge black vortex slowly spinning on the dome of the library. Countless tiny black threads hung down from the vortex and connected to the book monsters.
"That's the source of the evil spirit!" Pan Yue shouted, "As long as we destroy it, these book monsters will disappear!"
While fending off the book monster's attacks, Pan Yue carefully observed his surroundings. He discovered that the shaking of the bookshelves seemed to be somehow connected to the vortex in the dome. He quickly ran to a bookshelf and pushed it hard. The bookshelf creaked and shook slightly, and the vortex in the dome flickered.
Pan Yue's mind moved, and he immediately understood the key. He shouted loudly: "Chu Feng, help me push down the bookshelf!"
Chu Feng immediately understood Pan Yue's intention. He fought back the book monsters around him, then ran to Pan Yue's side. Together, they toppled the bookshelf. As the bookshelf collapsed, the vortex in the dome shook violently, and the black threads connecting the book monsters snapped. Deprived of their energy source, the book monsters dissolved into confetti, drifting through the air.
The surrounding bookshelves stopped shaking, and the library returned to calm.
"Huh..." Pan Yue let out a long sigh and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Chu Feng also breathed a sigh of relief, but his heart was still full of vigilance. He knew that this was just the tip of the iceberg of the new threat, and the real evil spirit seemed to be hiding deeper.
Suddenly, Chu Feng's gaze fell on a wall deep within the library. It looked like any other wall, yet it faintly emanated a strong, sinister aura. He stepped forward, observing carefully, and discovered a barely perceptible crack in the wall... Chu Feng reached out and gently pushed along the crack...
