Traces of the Enemy

Sunlight bathed the streets of the magical town, bustling with people. This was the gathering place for wizards to purchase magical materials. Carl, dressed in a simple black robe, blended into the crowd, scanning the dazzling array of magic shop signs along the street. He needed to gather some rare materials for his upcoming studies and research. However, he had no idea that this seemingly ordinary outing would lead him to smell danger.

"Carl, let's go to that store first. I heard they just received a batch of good magical herbs." Leo, who was traveling with us, pointed to an old shop at the corner of the street and said, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.

"Okay." Carl responded and was about to raise his foot when suddenly, a familiar aura of dark magic crept up his back like an icy snake, causing the hairs on his back to stand on end. He paused abruptly, his expression becoming serious.

"What's wrong? Carl." Leo noticed Carl's abnormality and asked in confusion.

"There's a scent of dark magic. I don't think it's right," Carl whispered, his eyes sharpening like a cheetah sensing danger. His heartbeat quickened involuntarily. He knew this scent all too well. It was the scent of his old enemy, Victor. Every incident involving him was accompanied by bloodshed and disaster.

"Dark magic? Here?" Leo became nervous. He clenched the wand in his hand and looked around vigilantly.

Carl nodded slightly, closing his eyes and concentrating, trying to track the source of the aura. It was like a faint thread, appearing and disappearing amidst the cacophony of magical energy, but Carl, drawing on his experience of battling dark magic in his previous life, was able to track it down.

"Over there, let's go." Carl opened his eyes and walked towards a narrow alley. Leo followed closely behind him. The two of them carefully avoided the attention of others. They knew that if they alerted the enemy, they might lose the chance to track him.

The alley was dark and damp, filled with a pungent smell, and the walls were covered with moss and unknown magical vines. As Carl and Leo walked along the alley, the smell of dark magic became stronger and stronger.

"Karl, are you sure this is the place? It feels eerie." Leo whispered, his voice echoing in the quiet alley with a hint of uneasiness.

"Yes, it's right here." Carl's tone was firm, his eyes fixed on the front. Suddenly, he stopped and saw a magic circle emitting a faint light on the ground in front of him.

The magic circle was hidden in the shadows of the alley, easily overlooked if one didn't look closely. Its lines were complex and eerie, emanating a dark aura. Carl leaned in to examine it, and the more he looked, the more startled he became. The pattern of this magic circle was strikingly similar to the escape circle Dracula had used during his previous battle.

"This... this magic circle..." Carl's brow furrowed, a flicker of fear and vigilance in his eyes. He recalled the brutal battle with Dracula in his previous life. At the crucial moment of the battle, the opponent escaped through this magic circle, causing Carl to fail and pay a heavy price.

"What's wrong? Carl, do you know this magic circle?" Leo looked at Carl's expression and had a bad feeling in his heart.

"This is a very dangerous escape magic circle, the same one I encountered in my previous life. It seems that our opponents are very cautious. Once there is any disturbance, they will disappear through this magic circle." Carl explained, his hand unconsciously clenching the wand.

"So what do we do now?" Leo asked.

"We can't act rashly. Let's observe first. If we destroy the magic circle now, it may alert them and we will never find them again." Carl said. He pulled Leo to hide in a corner and used magic to conceal their breath.

They waited in the corner for a long time, the surroundings so quiet that only the sound of their own heartbeats could be heard. Suddenly, the magic circle flickered, and a dark figure emerged from it. The figure was shrouded in a black robe, and his face could not be seen clearly, but the dark magic emanating from him made Carl and Leo feel oppressed.

"How's it going?" A deep and hoarse voice came from the black shadow's mouth, like the roar of a demon from hell.

"Sir, everything is going according to plan. We have found several suitable targets." Another voice came from a dark corner, and then several dark shadows slowly walked out.

"Very good, don't leave any traces. The master's plan cannot fail." said the black-robed shadow, with a hint of coldness in his voice.

"Yes, sir. However, we have recently felt that a force is investigating us. Could it be from the academy?" asked the dark shadow in the corner.

"Hmph, so what even if it's the academy? They don't know what they're about to face. Keep moving, and once you're ready, start the ceremony." The black-robed shadow ordered.

Carl and Leo were listening in the corner with fear in their hearts. They didn't know what the dark magicians' plan was, but it sounded like this plan would pose a huge threat to the academy and even the entire magical world.

"We have to go back and tell the teachers at the academy." Leo whispered to Carl.

"Not yet. We don't have enough evidence, and we don't know how many more strongholds like this they have. We need more information." Carl responded in a low voice, a hint of determination flashing in his eyes.

The shadows conferred for a while around the magic circle, then gradually left. Carl and Leo waited until they were far away before coming out from the corner.

"Let's follow them and see if we can find their lair." Carl said. He cast a tracking spell to make himself and Leo's figures blurry and difficult to detect.

They carefully followed the shadows, passing through the streets of the town and arriving at the edge of it. Here lay a desolate ruin, once an ancient magical castle, destroyed in war, leaving only shattered walls. The shadows weaved through the ruins, eventually entering a hidden cavern.

"There is a cave here. It seems that this is one of their strongholds." Carl said in a low voice.

"Should we go in? It might be dangerous in there." Leo hesitated.

"We must go in. Only then can we find out their plan." Carl said firmly, and he took the lead in walking towards the cave.

The cave was dark and damp, and the walls were inlaid with some magical crystals that emitted a faint glow, but this light could not dispel the darkness, but instead made the cave seem even more gloomy and terrifying. Carl and Leo walked carefully, they could sense the presence of magical traps and hidden sentries around them.

"Be careful, there are magic traps here." Carl reminded Leo softly. He cast magic and carefully disarmed one trap after another.

Deep in the cave, they heard some noises.

"These materials should be enough. As long as we find the last one, the ritual can begin."

"What's the last one?"

"It's the legendary Dark Stone. It's said to be hidden in the forbidden area of the academy."

"The academy's forbidden area? That's hard to deal with. There's a powerful protective magic there."

"Humph, we will find a way. The master has prepared everything for us."

Carl and Leo were horrified when they heard this. The Academy's Forbidden Grounds were one of the most mysterious places in the academy, housing many powerful and dangerous magical items. If the Dark Stone was truly there and was obtained by these dark magicians, the consequences would be disastrous.

"We have to go back quickly and tell the teacher the news." Carl said. He knew that the seriousness of the matter was beyond their imagination.

They quietly exited the cave and headed towards the academy. Carl felt heavy-hearted along the way, knowing that the battle with Victor was inevitable, and this time, the enemy's plot was even more sinister.

After returning to the academy, Carl and Leo immediately found several teachers and reported their findings to them.

"The Dark Stone? They actually want to use this idea!" A teacher said in shock.

"It seems we must strengthen the defense of the academy, especially the protection of the forbidden area." Another teacher said.

"Carl, Leo, you did a great job. However, this matter cannot be made public. We have to investigate secretly and cannot let the enemy realize that we already know their plan." The dean said, his eyes revealing solemnity and worry.

In the days that followed, the academy seemed calm, but preparations were underway. Teachers intensified patrols throughout the academy and deployed more magical defense arrays. Carl was also busy, knowing he needed to improve his skills quickly to be effective in the upcoming battle.

He searched the library every day for information, looking for ways to fight against dark magic. In an ancient book, he discovered a long-lost light magic that was said to be able to restrain powerful dark magic and even break dark magic circles.

"If I can learn this kind of magic, maybe I can stop them." Carl thought to himself, and he began to practice according to the records in the classics.

However, this light magic is very complex, requiring extremely high magical power and a pure mind. Carl encountered many difficulties during his practice and was even injured several times due to the backlash of his magic power.

"Carl, don't try too hard. This kind of magic is too dangerous." Ellie looked at the injured Carl and said with heartache.

“I’m fine, I have to learn it, this is our only hope.” Karl said through gritted teeth, his eyes full of determination.

On the training grounds, Carl also increased his intensity. He conducted actual combat drills with his classmates, constantly improving his combat skills. During one drill, he faced off against a powerful classmate. The opponent's magical attacks came at him like a storm, but Carl, with his tenacious will and skilled skills, repeatedly overcame danger.

"Karl, you have made great progress recently!" the classmates exclaimed.

"It's not enough, I need to be stronger." Carl said. He knew that the battle with the dark magician could not tolerate any slackness.

Meanwhile, the academy's investigation has made new progress. Through various clues, the teachers have discovered some of the Dark Mage's spies within the academy. These spies are well hidden, and usually behave like ordinary students, but they have been passing information to the Dark Mage.

"We must find out these spies, otherwise our every move will be under the enemy's surveillance," said a teacher.

The academy began a secret investigation, with teachers using special magic to detect the magical fluctuations of each student, searching for any hidden dark auras. This process also led to some misunderstandings, with some students being misjudged due to their special magical constitutions. However, after careful investigation, several real causes were eventually identified.

"Why did you betray the academy?" The dean looked at the captured traitor, his eyes filled with pain and anger.

"Haha, Dean, you are too naive. The power of Lord Victor is beyond your imagination. He will rule the entire magical world. We just surrendered to him in advance." The insiders laughed crazily, their eyes full of admiration for the dark power.

Carl looked at these classmates who were corrupted by darkness, and his heart was filled with sorrow. He knew that the temptation of dark magic was huge, but these people chose to fall and became accomplices of the enemy.

"We can't let their conspiracy succeed. We must stop Victor." Carl said to the classmates around him, his fists clenched, and the fighting spirit in his heart became stronger.

As time passes, the academy's defenses grow stronger, but Carl's unease grows. He knows the dark magicians won't give up easily; they must be plotting a greater conspiracy. And the dark magical aura lurking in the shadows hangs like a sword of Damocles, poised to strike at any moment, bringing devastating disaster. In this perilous moment, Carl and the entire academy strive to defend themselves, awaiting the final showdown with the dark magicians—a life-or-death battle that will determine the fate of the wizarding world.
