HP: For a better world
Chapter 99 Competitiveness
The next morning, Winster went to Professor McGonagall's office to hand in his course selection schedule.
However, Hermione had already arrived at the Great Hall and was eating her breakfast on toast while flipping through the Numerology textbook she had borrowed.
Ron was sitting next to her, asking her in surprise why she started reading a book at the beginning of the school year.
"Didn't you get first place in the grade?" Ron yelled, confused: "Why are you holding a book and reading when the school just started? That's terrible..." He lifted the book and took a look from the bottom, "Or it's digital divination... Haven't you already taken a divination class?" Ron muttered.
"First of all," Hermione slapped his paw, which was still covered with crumbs, away angrily. "We don't have the same course selections anymore, Ron. There's no ranking," she said, motioning for Harry to help pass on the blueberry jam he was holding.
Harry scooped a spoonful of jam from the nearby bowl and dunked it onto her plate.
Hermione thanked him casually, "Thanks, Harry."
"Also," she spread the jam evenly on her toast and took a bite, "I like reading."
"If I must say, Winster was first last year. He just happened to score higher than me in Divination."
Hermione showed a somewhat conflicted expression... She wanted herself not to care, but she couldn't help but think... Winster had lost his memory of previous courses and had to make up for it completely within a year.
He made up for the lost marks in the practical exams in the past two years, so several subjects jumped from A to O. Practical marks account for almost half of the marks, which is why Hermione's marks were reduced to P after the Divination was invalidated... Professors can always find more faults than students. Just like Harry barely got an A [pass] in Potions last year.
It looked like Snape loosened his grip a bit this time... But Hermione had seen clearly that Harry was in the same situation as Trelawney was targeting her... It was just that Snape did not completely dissuade her... or he had some reservations.
To step on the line once is a talent, to step on the line every time is the cooperation between students and professors.
Snape absolutely pinched his nose and gave Harry an A.
Hermione hadn't lost in this kind of ranking for a long time... or it was because of the teacher's selfishness. Although the third-year curriculum was different, statistics were no longer collected for all subjects, but the ranking of each subject was published on the bulletin board.
But she still felt annoyed, and wanted to shout when she thought about it. There was a lot of anger in her chest, but she had no place to vent. Don't think she didn't know that Winster had practiced other spells in private! In advanced spells, Hermione has fallen behind.
She took a few deep breaths, then grabbed the toast and stuffed it into her mouth as if to vent her anger.
Go find Percy, go find the library, and finish breakfast... Hermione thought fiercely in her heart... Go right now!
"Why didn't you come back last night?" Harry asked. "We were waiting for you in the common room last night, wanting to talk about the Triwizard Tournament... but we didn't see you until lights out. Did you go out for a night walk?"
Hermione swallowed a mouthful of bread and said lightly, "Oh, about this matter, I went to Professor McGonagall, it's just a small matter."
She waved her hand as if she didn't care.
"I'm going to change my schedule. Divination is all a scam."
Ron looked a little surprised. "I thought," he interrupted, "I thought you were going to keep fighting with Trelawney."
"How could that be?" Hermione took a deep breath, "Am I that kind of person?" When she said this, she seemed to be gritting her teeth and smiling: "It's just a temporary change of strategy. Maybe my divination should be somewhere else - anyway, I don't believe in talent."
"She's just targeting me. This is all a gypsy trick in the story." Hermione slowly moved her eyes to stare at the two of them. "It's not too late now, right, Ron? Harry? What do you think?"
"Did you really learn anything from this class? I mean - besides making some tea foam and maintaining a crystal ball that's covered in dust."
Ron cleared his throat and tried to say, "In fact, the wizarding world generally believes that Trelawney still has some gift of prophecy..." His voice became smaller and smaller under Hermione's threatening glare, and finally became silent.
Ron ran his hand across his mouth like a zipper, signaling him to shut up.
"…Professor McGonagall is currently looking for some students to replace Percy."
Hermione forced a smile and said, "She even invited me to go and help... help her deal with some heavy application forms, course arrangements from various professors, and teaching props to be used... Percy used to do the same thing, and I never thought he had completed so many difficult tasks before... Professor McGonagall thought I had 'talent', and she encouraged me to give it a try, maybe I could find some new goals."
She deliberately emphasized certain pronunciations and snorted heavily, and in an instant, a sense of oppression from the academic bully seemed to surge over her body.
Ron and Harry looked at each other. Did she mean that she would be a prefect next year?
"Professor McGonagall also told me that Percy would be returning to school frequently recently because of the Triwizard Tournament, and suggested that I go find him. She was worried before that I wouldn't be able to complete the courses because there were too many, but now it seems that I have more than enough energy to do these things." Hermione glanced at the two boys who suddenly stopped talking, lifted her hair, and gathered the messy hair aside.
"Of course... I still have some competitors." Hermione said in a relaxed tone: "Since it is still early to make a decision, Professor McGonagall said she plans to let us try together."
"I looked at Professor McGonagall's list... I don't think any of them can compare to me... at least for now." Hermione raised her chin modestly, enjoying Ron and Harry's shocked looks, and added: "But I think I should ask Percy as soon as possible to find out the situation."
"If you want to do it, you must do your best." She said seriously and enthusiastically. It seemed that Professor McGonagall had changed her way to stir up her fighting spirit: "I can't tolerate losing to others because of my carelessness - just like in the exam... I will start preparing from now on... See you later!"
She walked away angrily, holding the book.
Harry watched Hermione leave in awe, and turned to ask Ron, "Why didn't you tell her that Percy was here?"
"I don't want to talk about him—"
Ron poked at the bacon on his plate and said, "You didn't say that either, didn't you?"
He pursed his lips to point to the opposite side, where a bright red-haired person stood out among the green crowd.
"Ha, Percy," Ron said sarcastically, "an example worth learning from!" He angrily picked up the bacon that he had pierced with holes and put it in his mouth.
"I will never be like him. He was in his own college last night, and sat across from me the next day."
Ron deliberately glared at the Slytherin side, hoping that Percy, who was sitting in the Slytherin seat opposite him, would sense it and wake up.
However, Percy was busy communicating with his superiors who had come to Hogwarts today and was in no mood to pay attention to his youngest brother.
*
As soon as Winster stepped into the hall, he found that there were some strangers in the Slytherin seats today. Everyone sat at the table in an orderly manner, which was rare. Even the students who had finished eating long ago pretended to have enthusiastic conversations with their classmates.
A distinctive red head stood there, constantly raising his hand to reject the students who came forward and wanted to talk to him, but was kept back by Crouch's gentle expression, showing his friendliness.
They wanted to know the details of the Triwizard Tournament, but they also couldn't help but want to leave a good impression in front of this big shot from the Ministry of Magic.
Winster did not rush over, although he had a rough idea of who the other party was - who else could it be? It was said that he favored Percy and was in the limelight after the announcement of the Triwizard Tournament last night, Mr. Barty Crouch, the Director of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.
Only a few "reserved" Slytherins remained where they were and did not rush forward.
Winster walked to his old seat. Luo was waiting for him at the dining table. The others were eating, except Mike, who had not arrived yet. However, Carl had already prepared a breakfast for him and placed it next to him.
"You're really late today," Loial said jokingly. "Would you like some pumpkin juice? And some mashed potatoes I saved for you."
"Thanks, brother." Winster took the plate and sat down and said, "I'm going to hand in my course selection form. What's happening over there?" He gestured to where the crowd was gathered.
"Didn't I say that yesterday?" Loial shrugged. "Someone from the Ministry of Magic came today—the head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Those flirting guys have already surrounded us as if nothing had happened."
Apparently, the queue there had been going on for a long time, and it wasn't over even halfway through the breakfast time.
These nearly adult wizard students from pure-blood families went up to the executive one by one in order of their status, and in this way they made an orderly impression on the big shot... but the real children of big families carefully kept a certain distance from them, and showed a lack of interest.
I'm talking about Malfoy.
The new Daily Prophet was right next to him. The huge headline "Restarting the Triwizard Tournament! A Detailed Account of the Past Triwizard Tournaments" could be seen on the newspaper even through several heads.
As soon as Hogwarts announced the Triwizard Tournament last night, the Ministry of Magic quickly followed suit. Today's headlines were all about the Triwizard Tournament and the organizers of the tournament.
Perhaps only "The Quibbler" would take a different approach to explore the existence of conspiracy theories.
"Why did you come here too?"
Luna noticed Winster coming and quickly ran over to take a seat opposite him. Her silver-white eyes were dazed and focused. She happily shook the carrot earrings on her ears. In her hand was the "The Quibbler" published by her family. It suspected Germany, the party that proposed the event, and linked several recent gas explosions in Germany with the signing of the Triwizard Tournament Treaty. It believed that they had conspired to give up the honor of the venue in order to conceal...
"To conceal the fact that there is a wizard fruit among Muggles, and that anyone who eats it will turn into a Snorlax, causing everything around them to explode???"
Winster read it out loud unconsciously. It seemed reliable at the beginning, but then it suddenly started to talk nonsense in a serious manner, which made Winster have a lot of question marks in his mind.
Luna's silvery white eyes looked over the newspaper:
"I want to wait until they all leave, then go over to ask Germany if wizard fruits really exist. Are all Scimitar-horned Snorks really transformed from humans? Are all German wizards a variation of Scimitar-horned Snorks..." She giggled.
"My father believes that their horns are hidden under their robes and stick out from their chests." Luna gestured in front of her chest, "The horn is like a wizard's wand, it explodes when touched, so there are so many magic riots disguised as gas explosions."
While Winster was still immersed in shock, Luo began to ask questions like a curious baby.
"...Does this kind of fruit really exist?" he asked curiously, staring at the contents of the newspaper and thinking: "Can it turn Muggles into wizards? It sounds a lot like the tests in Greek mythology, where all kinds of magical things always appear... Then when they cast spells, won't their horns explode when they touch clothes? No wonder it explodes so easily... They must be very good at spells like fire magic. After all, this horn sounds a lot like the horn of an ermine..."
"Loao!" Winster couldn't help but shout.
Don't really believe it!
Luna smiled at Loial in a friendly manner and said seriously, "I have never seen a wizard fruit, but Snorlax do exist. They like dark and humid forests... My father said he once saw one in a forest in Sweden. So he must be able to tell the difference!"
Loial asked, looking quite interested.
Winster covered his head and groaned. He felt that if Mr. Lovegood continued to write, he would be able to write a wizard version of One Piece. Maybe many wizards would buy it.
Luna's story attracted a group of junior students, and they started to discuss it. As for the discussion of the words in the newspaper, they had evolved to the point where they began to imagine what the world would be like after it spread... But fortunately, Percy finally began to disperse the people who gathered around him - or rather, he perfectly fulfilled the duties of a good assistant, playing the role of the bad guy, and then promptly drove away the idlers when the boss needed him.
Mr. Crouch was evidently very pleased with him.
"Alright, alright, get out of the way!" Percy sternly lectured, "Don't crowd around here. Mr. Crouch still needs to finish his breakfast and go to work soon. He doesn't have time to waste here with you. Go finish your own things! Mr. Crouch will come to school from time to time, so you have plenty of time!"
The only thing Percy didn't say was that there wouldn't be many chances to get back into the castle.
