Chapter 729 The Avengers, the Ultimate Team, and America
Chapter 729 The Avengers, the Ultimate Team, and America
The Ultimate Team, a superhero team created by the US government to save face after AIM disbanded and the Avengers betrayed them, has been in a very awkward position.
There are three awkward aspects: first, they are always compared to the Avengers; second, they can't recruit enough players; and third, they can't produce any decent results. The latter two points highlight the first, making the Ultimate Team even more awkward.
Because of the inability to recruit, after months of struggle, Carol reluctantly accepted the pressure from various government departments and brought Ares, the Greek god of war who had betrayed her during the AIM incident, into the ultimate team.
In fact, according to Carol's idea, this position should have been given to Hercules, but Hercules looked down on the Ultimate Team (strictly speaking, he looked down on the previous Avengers of America), and Carol couldn't prove herself, so she ended up in this awkward position.
She even considered running away with her bucket more than once, but when she thought that if she didn't lead the team, someone else might take over, Carol decided to hold back. So, after all sorts of struggles, the Ultimate Team gained a great general, Ares, who had a history of backstabbing.
Then she led this group of people to Avengers Tower to put out the fire.
"You guys arrived at the perfect time, you could even say it was too perfect." Tony Stark looked at the group with dissatisfaction, even though some of them were his friends. "Did you install some kind of alarm in Avengers Tower? How did you get here so quickly?"
“Actually, we just happened to be in New York, Stark.”
Faced with Tony's sarcastic remarks that implied a possible accusation, Carol was quite dissatisfied: "The news of the attack on Avengers Tower has been on the news for a while now, and it won't take us long to get here."
In fact, Tony and Peter had already taken care of things, so the Ultimate Team's arrival was indeed not early.
"Okay, okay, let me talk to Tony, alright, Carole?"
Colonel Rhodes glanced at Carol, then pulled Tony aside: "Listen, buddy, you know, we Ultimate Team members always have some missions to complete..."
“Then you can quit and join the Avengers, Rhode.”
Rhodes looked at Tony with a helpless expression, then shook his head: "It's not that simple, Tony. I'm a soldier, and soldiers can't refuse orders. So the Ultimate Team is where I need to fight. Listen, buddy, the Ultimate Team needs to achieve something. We have to do something... even if it's just catching some people."
Tony understood Rhodes's meaning. In order to make the Ultimate Team's performance look better, Rhodes wanted Tony to hand over the Destruction Group to them and take them to another prison instead of locking them up in the mansion prison.
Tony thought for a moment, then didn't agree immediately. Instead, he took Peter to the other side, spoke to him, and asked, "What do you think, son?"
"To some extent, I am quite supportive."
Peter's words surprised Tony, but Peter explained himself: "A prison has a limited capacity, just like the previous Raft Prison. If something happens, it can easily cause a large-scale chain reaction, so it is necessary to separate super-powered criminals."
Tony understood Peter's unspoken meaning: separating different prisoners was necessary, but the problem was that the US government itself was untrustworthy, and the management of these supervillains might be problematic.
However, on the other hand, as Avengers, they actually have no real authority over these supervillains. The criminals currently imprisoned in the mansion have no jurisdiction over them; their control over the mansion prison is entirely based on what everyone considers perfectly legitimate. If the US government were to investigate this matter thoroughly, it could lead to a major conflict with the Avengers.
Then Peter brought up another matter.
“When I was talking to the sabotage team, I asked them about the source of their power. When I asked them one by one, I mentioned Loki, and my spider-sense clearly twitched. Also, many of the characteristics of that crowbar reminded me of Thor's hammer.”
In conclusion, the Destroyer is a superhuman created by Loki, who is the God of Mischief. It's strange that Loki would want to put his own superhuman in prison.
So after discussing it for a while, Peter and Tony finally came to a conclusion. Peter smiled and said to Rhodes, "Okay, buddy, you owe me, take these guys with you. But you have to leave their weapons behind, okay?"
"No problem, no problem," Colonel Rhodes immediately smoothed things over. Carol was definitely not happy with the current situation, but there was nothing he could do. This tactic, though shameless, was effective.
Watching the Ultimate Team leave, Peter seemed somewhat anxious: "I was wondering if Thor's hammer could automatically recognize direction and return to its master, and if this crowbar could have the same effect."
"Are you worried that these guys will turn into our enemies as soon as they get the crowbar? But we've defeated them before, so of course we know how to deal with them."
Nevertheless, Peter still felt that something was wrong, but he couldn't figure it out for the time being, so he decided to put it aside for now and go back to Strange.
As for Tony, he did exactly the same thing as Hydra. After thinking about it, he decided to take a good look at the USB drive brought by the sabotage team. He first had Jarvis check the computer at the front desk, and after confirming that there was nothing wrong, he began to have Jarvis analyze it.
"What was the result, Jarvis?"
Jarvis didn't reply, which made Tony feel uneasy, but fortunately it was a false alarm. Jarvis quickly reported his test results to Tony, and there was no problem at all. Tony was overjoyed. There was nothing wrong? Then your USB drive is a complete scam.
These vandals are really easy to fool; they fell for something so easy.
[They fell for such an easy trick.]
On the other side, Loki, the archmage who had been observing the entire battle from the shadows and had enchanted the crowbar of the sabotage team, quietly appeared next to the Sanctuary. Loki shook his head helplessly, then recalled the scent on the USB drive.
That was undoubtedly a tremendous force, and with it, his plan might succeed.
"But first, I need to find out who's behind him. It seems like he doesn't have a good relationship with Stark either."
