Chapter 50 The Mysterious Guest Appears

Chapter 50 The Mysterious Guest Appears

The roar of helicopter rotors echoed in his ears. Nick Fury squinted with one eye, gazing through the bulletproof glass window at the Avengers Tower, which was gradually shrinking in the distance.

He didn't believe in any totem legends about Lady Spider, but he knew perfectly well the origin of the spider that bit Peter and Cindy—it was the product of a super-soldier project codenamed "Savage Force," which aimed to create a new generation of super soldiers using animal genes. The earliest project leader was Professor Nathaniel Essex of Britain, but he handed the project over to his two students, Richard Parker and Herbert Edgar Wyndham, because he turned to research on mutant genes.

The latter has been missing for many years, while the former, Richard, chose spiders as his research subject. He conducted the research with his wife, Mary Parker, but withdrew from the project a few years ago, and the research was taken over by Richard's student, Jonathan Drew.

The reason they chose to leave was because they discovered that the U.S. military was sharing relevant information with another secret force, which was why Nick Fury recruited them, ultimately leading to their deaths at the hands of the Winter Soldier.

The deaths of Richard and Mary Parker were a major blunder for S.H.I.E.L.D., but their sacrifice was not without merit—it tore open Hydra's carefully woven facade. This terrorist organization, which should have been eradicated in World War II, was not only alive but had also extended its tentacles into the very marrow of the postwar order.

AIM, Roxon, the Hand… these Hydra forces that have surfaced are merely the tip of the iceberg. And “Savage Force”—which Hydra internally calls “Project Two”—is just the beginning. Fury’s temples throbbed. If the overt Savage Force project could produce three superhumans, how many monsters would Hydra’s clandestine Project Two have spawned?

More importantly, Hydra has definitely planted spies within S.H.I.E.L.D., but how many spies are planted within S.H.I.E.L.D., and whether they can be wiped out in one fell swoop, are all unknowns for Nick Fury at this moment.

“He knows these things.”

As Fury watched Avengers Tower disappear from sight, he remembered what Peter Parker had just said and frowned.

Did Richard leave him something?
Wilson, cigar in hand, walked into the Fisk Building's basement, Aaron Davis following silently like a shadow behind him, smoke swirling in the incandescent light. Something new was under construction: a high-specification, covert laboratory.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you here, Dr. Otto Octavia.”

Faced with the outstretched mechanical claw, King did not refuse, but grasped it, shook it slightly, and then released it: "I think you understand my request. Spider-Man has seriously disrupted New York's underground trade, and I need a weapon that can deal with him."

“It’s an honor, Mr. Kingpin,” Otto said, adjusting his glasses with his mechanical claw. “But first, I need to collect enough data. I’ve seen some of Spider-Man’s battles and recorded his fights with the Thriller and the Spider Swarm. Even so, I don’t think that’s the limit of his abilities. If you want to defeat Spider-Man, you have to push him to his limits first.”

"As the old saying goes, be close to your friends, but even closer to your enemies."

Kingpin frowned upon hearing this. Testing Spider-Man's limits? He knew that even with all the weapons the New York mob had, they couldn't possibly be a match for Spider-Man. These superhumans had changed the game; numbers and firepower were no longer absolute advantages.

Therefore, to fight Spider-Man, we would have to create something similar to a swarm of spiders.

"Make me a suit of armor. I'll take on Spider-Man."

Aaron Davis spoke up, and Kingpin turned to look at his trusted aide, whose gaze was firm: "Leave it to me, King, I can handle it."

“Listen, Aaron, my friend.” Kingpin put his arm around Aaron’s shoulder, the pressure just right. “I’ll build you a suit of armor, but not for dealing with Spider-Man, understand? We don’t need to do it ourselves.”

He turned to Octavia: "I will hire a group of international mercenaries to test your new equipment, Dr. Otto. Before that, you should focus on developing weapons to deal with Spider-Man. I hope to see results soon."

Watching Kingpin leave the lab, Otto propped himself up with his mechanical claws and turned on his computer. Besides the weapons he developed, there were other options, such as stealing the research findings of America's Super Soldier program.

As far as Otto knew before leaving Osborn Technologies, the military had discovered a meteorite in the Arizona desert. It carried a symbiote that could fuse with Earth's organisms and significantly enhance human capabilities. If they could obtain and control this entity, defeating Spider-Man would be a piece of cake.

As Otto pondered this, he checked Kingpin's current inventory of Chitauri parts on his computer, adjusting his glasses as he began to devise some equipment to deal with Kingpin.

As for what he wants to do, it has always been clear—Spider-Man is not his enemy, never has been; Norman Osborn, who has ruined him, is Otto's real enemy.

"A light particle imaging device? It was given to Quentin Baker... Kingpin actually managed to find someone who understands this stuff."

In fact, Quentin not only knew about it, but he was also constantly improving the device. At this moment, looking at the thing in his hand that resembled a fish tank, he couldn't help but hold his breath.

"I'm done? I'm done. I really got it done?"

As he muttered to himself, Quentin couldn't help but rub his temples. Electrodes connected to the projector were attached to both sides of his temples, and the images in the room were constantly changing.

Quentin heard footsteps; Kingpin's men, who had been bullying him, were coming again. He looked around and then at the light particle imager in his hand.

He put this thing on his head.

"Baker? Where did that kid go?"

The two gang members who entered found the room empty and, puzzled, prepared to leave. They walked towards the door but bumped into something. They quickly realized what had happened.

"That damn kid is playing tricks on us again! Quick, find the door and get out!"

After groping their way to the door, they left the room. Based on past experience, as long as they left, they could avoid being tricked by Quentin and then teach that bastard a lesson.

But this time something seems a little different...

They stepped out of the room, only to find nothing had changed. They walked back into Quentin's studio, and then they were struck hard; something slammed into them, knocking them to the ground.

With a puff of smoke, a man wearing a glass hood and a green suit appeared in front of them. The gang member threw a punch, but missed everything.

“Tell Kingpin—I’ll take care of Spider-Man.”

Nathaniel Essex, the well-known villain of the X-Men, Mister Sinister. Herbert E. Degar Wyndham, whose future name is "Supreme Evolution".

Mysterio, who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #2 (February 1963), whose real name is Quentin Baker, is one of the founding members of the Sinister Six and one of Spider-Man's most famous enemies. He was originally a Hollywood special effects artist who has no superpowers. He is good at using high technology to create realistic illusions and hallucinogenic chemical gases.
