Chapter 106 Don’t look back
The clear, melodious chimes continued, as if guiding Wu Xiaoxie in the right direction.
The faint candlelight of the octagonal lantern seemed to possess a magical power, dispelling the thick fog around them. Looking up, a row of flickering candlelight stretched out in the distance, leading towards the direction from which the bell tolled.
Wu Xiaoxie quickly followed, falling behind.
The bells hanging from the lantern in his hand rang in unison with the other bells, their sounds perfectly synchronized and without any discord.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, the candlelight was neatly arranged into several rows as we continued forward.
Wu Xiaoxie quickly found a random team and followed them.
After advancing several dozen meters, the candlelight stopped and the bell tolled temporarily.
While he was still in a daze, a hand suddenly reached out from the side and pulled him back down, then helped him to his feet. A childish voice whispered something in his ear, sounding somewhat surprised and reproachful.
Wu Xiaoxie recognized the voice as that of the little boy who had brought him the stone box before. He guessed that because he was unfamiliar with the place, he had joined the wrong group, and the candlelight in this group was noticeably lower than the ones next to it.
Wu Xiaoxie touched his nose, feeling slightly embarrassed. He lowered his head, looking down at his nose and contemplating his inner thoughts. He didn't know what these people were trying to do here, but judging from the scale, it was probably some kind of important sacrificial ceremony.
A melodious and steady voice came from above, different from the tone of his speech. It sounded like a prayer or plea, like chanting. Even though Wu Xiaoxie couldn't understand a single word, he could still feel the immense intent contained within it.
Unbeknownst to them, the thick fog around them dissipated.
Wu Xiaoxie cautiously raised his eyelids and looked ahead. He saw a tall and majestic altar directly in front of him, beyond the dark crowd. The leader he had seen before was standing on the edge of the altar, chanting, holding up something black. Behind him, to his right, stood a slender and graceful woman, holding the hand of a little boy who was also dressed in a white robe with dark gold patterns.
As if by some strange twist of fate, Wu Xiaoxie's gaze met that of the little boy. Despite the great distance between them, Wu Xiaoxie surprisingly saw a hint of familiarity and an unconcealed surprise in the boy's eyes.
With a sudden rush of sound to his head, Wu Xiaoxie was so startled he almost forgot to breathe. He remembered where he had seen those peculiar heterochromatic eyes before.
The eyes of the wooden fish, controlled by some force, are this color in the tomb raider's hole in the underwater tomb.
Even though the mask covered the upper half of his face, he was 100% certain that the little boy was Muyu.
Wu Xiaoxie opened his mouth, wanting to shout out, but the words that came out seemed to be blocked by something, and he couldn't even hear them himself. He was anxious and hurriedly tried to push through the crowd in front of him to find the wooden fish.
The child looked at Wu Xiaoxie, his eyes flickered, and his lips moved slightly.
"Hurry up!" The childish voice of the wooden fish suddenly rang in his mind.
Wu Xiaoxie was taken aback and subconsciously asked, "What?"
"Go! Don't look back!"
Wu Xiaoxie felt his body was out of control, automatically turning around and starting to move his legs. He tried desperately to stop, but to no avail.
The surrounding mist was rushing backward at high speed. Wu Xiaoxie was about to explode with anger and frustration. His mind was a mess. He couldn't understand the meaning of his and Muyu's appearance here. Those white-robed people seemed to have a close relationship with Muyu. Could they be Muyu and Xiaoge's clansmen?
That's not right. According to what Muyu said before, the Zhang family members practiced the "Finger of the Tomb Raider" technique from a young age, and their fingers were different from ordinary people's. But he didn't find anything special about those people's hands.
I've racked my brains to the point of baldness, but I still can't come up with a solution.
Without realizing it, the wind stopped, and Wu Xiaoxie found that the fog around him was getting thicker and thicker. Everything in front of him was a white blur. In a daze, he had the illusion that he was about to turn into fog and disappear into the world.
Suddenly realizing something was wrong, he knew it wasn't an illusion. He immediately looked down at his body and saw that, without his knowledge, his body was no longer a solid entity. It began to slowly thin and fade, as if a piece of ice was gradually melting and sublimating into a part of the surrounding mist.
Just as his thoughts were about to vanish, he felt a long-lost, explosive pain, as if his body had been run over countless times by a fully loaded truck, and all his bones were shattered.
"Uh--"
Wu Xiaoxie's body slammed heavily onto the boardwalk, and he cried out in pain. The pain also brought him back to his senses in an instant.
What lay before them was no longer a snow-capped mountain, but a colossal octopus covered in grotesque, blood-red markings. Each of its tentacles had a large, red lantern-shaped eye, one of which had been blown apart by Lao Yang's shot, leaving seven remaining.
My goodness!
Wu Xiaoxie exclaimed inwardly, "So the monsters in hell are octopuses! Could it be that this place was an ocean hundreds of millions of years ago? If so, wouldn't these octopuses be ancient relics?"
After thinking about it, he wanted to slap himself. At a time like this, he still had the nerve to think about such things. He was really impressed with himself.
The octopus didn't seem to be in a hurry to eat Wu Xiaoxie. It just used its tentacles to tease him, as if it were treating him as a toy. It tossed and turned Wu Xiaoxie like a ball, occasionally slapping the boardwalk. The violent vibrations made Wu Xiaoxie bounce like a ball, and the boardwalk swayed precariously under its torment.
