Chapter Eleven: The Debunker
For some madmen, their madness is incurable. In that case, death will be the only cure, the final destination and liberation.
If Solani has not yet performed a blood sacrifice using the flesh and blood of her family, then Fran would not mind changing the treatment plan.
Although she had not been spiritually corrupted by pagan rituals and her faith in evil gods was entirely spontaneous, making her a typical example of self-degradation... she was not entirely beyond redemption.
Fran was able to modify Solani's subconscious, even tamper with and fabricate her "self," erasing her mental convictions and madness, and helping her live out the rest of her life as a noblewoman with dignity and happiness.
If her mental madness is so deeply ingrained that it cannot be removed, then her personality should be reshaped.
If antivirus software doesn't work, then format it! If formatting doesn't work either, then physically destroy it and replace the hardware... Fran has a wide range of medical options, and there's bound to be one that suits her.
But at this moment, the ancient sacrifice of blood and flesh has been completed, and the sins, forged into mountains of iron, have been committed. There is no turning back now.
Even Fran struggled to use his prized medical skills to save the dead who had been transformed by the "flesh-and-blood shaping ritual."
After all, they had already been sacrificed to the Red Cup, becoming one of its endless bloodlines... Did she have to go and fight the Red Cup for them?
As a result, Solaniju lost her eligibility for other medical options. After all, Fran was just a doctor; she had no time to forgive sinners on behalf of the victims.
Fran had some knowledge and understanding of the law, and could be considered quite accomplished in it. However, her legal philosophy was simple and straightforward, which could be summarized as "blood for blood."
"Sigh, there's nothing you can do when you encounter troublesome and annoying patients... These heretics are so unruly, ignorant, and arrogant, what bad luck."
Fran stroked the black stitches on his knuckles, a hint of helplessness in his eyes.
For some patients, all that's needed is to cure their illness and restore their health, while for others...
To live is the plague itself.
-
Three days later.
Norlington Central District, the Hunters' Order's preparation room.
“Sister Heda, when will Dr. Fran finally contact us? This has been three days already…”
Vivian was half-reclined on the sofa in the preparation room, dressed in various standard equipment, almost armed to the teeth.
But at this moment she seemed a little bored, and even had a recently popular chivalric novel covering her face.
"It's only been three days, Vivian, stay calm... don't be impatient."
Haida wiped the wooden-handled folding knife in her hand, which was engraved with obscure patterns, her gaze calm and undisturbed, like a cold, ancient well.
Patience is one of the essential qualities of a funeral maid.
Haida once spent three months with a senior priest in pursuit of a heretical acolyte. It was a long hunt that spanned five cities and traversed countless wildernesses...
Ultimately, the hunt ended with the wicked heir's beheading. She felt a profound sense of pleasure and exhilaration as she severed the head of the acolyte.
Haida doesn't mind waiting, nor does she mind remaining silent, as long as it's all meaningful.
Because of her direct contact with Dr. Fran, Vivian was immediately assigned to Heida's action team. This meant that for the past few days, she had to spend every spare moment with Heida in the preparation room, ready to carry out the purge mission.
"Let's just consider it a vacation. I'll finish reading this book, 'The Female Knight of the Steam City vs. One Strong Goblin and Four Strong Women'."
Vivian sighed, took a soda cracker from the small basket on the table, and popped it into her mouth. She then continued reading the novel she was holding.
She had been complaining about the Secret Service's packed schedule, but the unexpected two-day break made her feel uneasy.
Hai Daxu raised her eyes slightly, glancing to the side with a somewhat strange expression.
"Sometimes it's really hard to understand what's going on in the minds of today's popular writers."
She's the type who never reads popular novels; besides classic works, she usually reads esoteric texts. For example, she's currently reading "The Scarlet Face," which she just borrowed from the Mystic's Library.
This book is one of the Red Cup's doctrinal texts, but it has no occult influences. Therefore, within the Mystic Hunters, it serves as general information about the Red Cup sect. However, due to the taboo nature of this document, certain permissions are required to borrow it.
“Sister Haida, who exactly is Dr. Fran? The General Affairs Council actually agreed to carry out the purge of the Red Cup Cult’s lair according to her plan and issued the purge order.”
Under normal circumstances, in order to eliminate unstable factors in the mission, the General Affairs Division would not agree to allow an unknown person with a security risk, such as Fran, to participate in the elimination mission.
"I'm sorry, I don't know." Haida said honestly that she knew nothing about it.
"But based on my previous experience working with her, I personally agree with the General Affairs Department's description of her as 'friendly.' Dr. Fran is indeed incredibly reliable in most situations. She can even make you unconsciously let yourself be led by her."
"That's it..."
Vivian subtly turned her gaze back to the novel in her hands.
She also thought that as the daughter of "Chief Hunter" Aheng Moira, Haida might know more secrets...□★
As a member of the Secret Service, gathering information anytime, anywhere has almost become an instinct for Vivian. This also causes her to sometimes appear inexplicably frivolous.
"Am I going to have to wait in the preparation room all day again? It's such a hassle to put on and take off all this gear..."
Vivian rubbed her eyes, her tone tinged with a helpless weakness.
Just then, the door to the preparation room slowly opened.
A wisp of cool, damp, grayish-white mist drifted and lingered.
"coming."
Haida's eyes narrowed slightly. She had already witnessed Dr. Fran's methods once before in the medical ward, and recognized him instantly.
"You're here? But this is the cult's maintenance room..."
Vivian was surprised again. She thought Fran would go through a check and notification process at the door first, but he just opened the door and came in.
Her teleportation ability even exempted the "anchors" of the Immaculate Lands?
Fran's slender figure, dressed in a white coat, gradually emerged from the hazy, chaotic mist.
Good day, both of you.
Fran stretched and gave a brief greeting to Haida and Vivian. She then covered her mouth slightly, resisting the urge to yawn.
When there are no patients or requests for treatment, Fran usually stays in a lazy state. Sometimes he even sleeps until noon before putting up the "Open for Business" sign at his small clinic.
Although Fog Street is hidden in a non-existent thirteenth street in North Norlington, it is usually never visited by visitors.
But sometimes, there is a lucky one who is called by the goddess of fate... and by chance comes to the door of the Foggy Street Clinic.
Good morning, Dr. Fran.
Haida nodded slightly in response. Then she began to get down to business.
"Has Lady Solani already returned to the Crimson Cup Cult's lair?"
Fran admired Heda's serious and dedicated work ethic. He clasped his hands together and began to answer Heda's question.
"Yes, that's right. After wandering for two days in the wasteland on the outskirts of the city and among the crowds in the city center with more than ten different appearances, she finally went to a place full of her own kind."
"There's no time to lose. I'll go and inform the General Affairs Department right now. The two 'refutations' from the White Cup Order who came to provide support have been waiting at the Order for two days."
"Oh? It seems the scholars at White Cup are quite interested in this matter."
Fran walked into the preparation room very naturally and casually took a soda cracker from the small wicker basket on the table.
Vivian carefully covered the cover of "The Female Knight of the Steam City vs. the Strong Goblin" in her hand, hiding it little by little behind her back.
While she didn't mind revealing her usual reading material to her colleague Heda, she felt inexplicably ashamed if Dr. Fran saw it. 5
After completing this action, Vivian picked up where Fran left off.
"After seeing the byproducts of the flesh-shaping ritual, the members of the White Cup Order were like gunpowder, and they quickly dispatched exorcists to help with the investigation. They even stayed at our headquarters for two days, ready to participate in the purge at any time."
She recalled the image of the well-dressed, refined, and amiable old man from the White Cup Order who wore gold-rimmed glasses suddenly slamming his pistol on the table.
"Moreover, they were very dissatisfied with the General Affairs Court's requirement to send only two denunciationists and kept asking if more manpower was needed... If they could locate the heretical stronghold themselves, they would definitely have already prepared to attack it themselves."
Heda sheathed the wooden-handled folding knife, which she had previously cleaned and maintained, back into its sheath on her nun's robe, and went to the door.
The swirling mist that Fran had encountered had dissipated, and the area outside the gate had returned to its normal state as a corridor.
Before leaving, Heda also made a slight joke about the White Cup Cult:
"It is said that only three things can move the old scholars of the White Cup. First, the emergence of a groundbreaking new technology; second, a theoretical breakthrough in mathematics; and third, news of the Red Cup Cult."
Watching Haida leave, Fran obediently sat down on the sofa and stretched her slender waist.
Her posture was dignified yet possessed a certain elegant agility, like a cat that had just arrived.
"Once bitten by a snake, twice shy. They've always been like that."
After saying that, she picked up another soda cracker and put it in her mouth. Clearly, she had a fondness for this kind of snack.
-
"These two nines are Professor Tyrell and Mr. Caissard, the 'Eight Debunkers' of the White Cup Order. Three"
"Professor Terence is an 'Ancient Relic Researcher' who carries three relics and possesses knowledge of the White Cup Order's secret arts. Child is his assistant and bodyguard."
After reporting to the General Affairs Department, Haida returned to the preparation room and briefly introduced the two exonerators to Fran.
Terence looked to be in his fifties, with graying hair and wearing a sophisticated khaki winter coat. He wore round-framed glasses with anti-slip chains. He perfectly embodied the image of a middle-aged professor, even carrying a thick tome under his arm.
Child was probably only in his early twenties. He looked strong and tall, handsome and sunny, with an eager expression on his face.
What is particularly striking is that he has a special leather holster on his back, in which is a huge gun of unusual length.
"This is Dr. Fran, a physician and coroner specially hired by the Order of the Mysteries."
Heda then introduced Fran to the two of them, using language that was more acceptable to them.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Fran.” Professor Terence glanced at Fran, a fleeting look of surprise in his eyes.
She seems a bit too young for the medical profession.
Although Terence had some doubts about whether such a young doctor could handle the purge mission, he did not voice his doubts out of courtesy, knowledge, and trust in the Order of the Hunters.
“It is my pleasure, Professor Terence. Oh, and Mr. Child, good day.”
Fran maintained a professional smile, friendly without being obsequious.
"Me too. It's a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Fran."
Childe looked slightly embarrassed but enthusiastic, seemingly hesitant to come forward and shake hands, but refrained from doing so because the teacher did not make a move.
Then, he noticed the black stitches on Fran's skin and asked with concern, "Dr. Fran, why are there so many stitches on your hands and neck? Were you injured?"
"Oh, that's a thing of the past. I was indeed a little injured because of it... but I'm fine now. Thank you for your concern."
Françoise raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised that Child would notice this and actually ask about it. However, out of consideration for others' concerns, she gave a brief explanation.
"Sigh, that kid..."
Professor Terence squinted at his somewhat impetuous assistant and couldn't help but sigh.
Asking him questions about members of a secret cult is impolite, even though I warned him before I came...
"I still don't understand why the heads of the General Affairs Division only agreed to let us send two refutations. Are we really going to rely on the five of us to wipe out a completely unknown den of heretics?"
"Our task is simply to locate and conduct perimeter reconnaissance. Four Funeral Court teams will be following us and will assist in the cleanup if necessary."
"So you're planning to take all the spoils... Alright, I understand. As long as the purge can be completed normally, the White Cup Order will have no objections."
Haida began to explain the specific plans for the mission to Terence, which somewhat alleviated his concerns.
"Time is of the essence, let's set off quickly."
Fran frowned slightly and urged the others on.
She had already located the Red Cup Cult's lair using the drugs Solanie had taken.
But at the same time, she received some less-than-pleasant news… these heretics had begun to relocate. In about half a day, the entire lair would be empty.
Fran stepped out of the preparation room first, his figure disappearing into the shadows of the narrow corridor.

Chapter Twelve: The Hunger Club
North Norlington, on the outskirts of the city.
We're nearing the northern border of Norrington; a little further on, we'll enter undeveloped wilderness.
Therefore, this place is rarely visited, and only members of secret sects and fugitives evading capture stay here for extended periods.
Generally speaking, the security situation here is not bad; orthodox religious patrols regularly conduct raids and investigations. Furthermore, not all secret religious groups are entirely cults; some smaller orthodox organizations also hold meetings here.
