However, it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't, which may be due to the level of the skill.
I don't know my exact location in the maze right now, nor do I know which way Slime-chan went. I think as long as I'm still in the maze, we'll meet again someday.
As long as both sides are still alive... haha...
I continued onward to some unknown place, praying that I would see Slime-chan again and that I would not encounter any trouble.
Then I encountered humans...
hmmmmmm…
You think you can mess with me?!
As I turned at a fork in the road, I saw a group of humans. They were wearing all sorts of equipment, carrying weapons, and chatting and laughing as they made their way deeper into the area.
I ran back before I even thought about it. Luckily, they had their backs to me, or I would have been the one in trouble.
But judging from the direction they're heading, they're not going this way. Should I follow them...?
Hmm! Let's stir things up! Stalk... oops! Follow them!
Chapter 15: Encountering Compatriots
"Hey, there's a trap over there, don't go there yet."
The adventurer, who looked like a thief, told the vanguard warrior to stop, and then went up to disarm the trap himself.
"Oh, oh, oh, that was a huge help! I almost stepped on it!" The fully armed soldier withdrew his foot and thanked the thief.
"Luckily you didn't go down..." the female mage holding the staff said with a wry smile.
They have been in the maze for three days, and in those three days they have encountered all sorts of traps. Although they have managed to escape each one by luck, they are mentally exhausted.
"Alright, it's off." The thief deftly disarmed the trap. "Let's keep going so we can get out of here sooner."
They had completed their quest in the maze and now all they had to do was return with the specified items. The reward for completing the quest was enough for them to enjoy a carefree life for a while.
They exchanged smiles, then tacitly formed a formation and headed towards the maze's exit. They dealt with the monsters that attacked them along the way; they seemed to be quite formidable adventurers.
"Wait... there's a hidden door here." The sharp-eyed thief noticed the marks on the rock wall and deduced that it was a hidden door.
Generally speaking, places with hidden doors are places with rewards—this is a consensus among all adventurers. However, once inside, they are sure to face some troublesome trials, so they began to vote.
"I don't want to go," the monk said, indicating his refusal. "I have a bad feeling about it."
"Hey, hey, hey, we're adventurers! Isn't adventure what we're supposed to be doing?" The thief thought it would be better to go in and take a look.
"I think it wouldn't be bad to go in and take a look," the soldier agreed.
Two to one, the mage's idea was rejected.
"Ugh... I'll just go in with you guys... This is so annoying..." the mage said in despair.
The thief gently pushed the switch, opening the hidden door. The room inside was empty, except for a treasure chest at the far end.
"Only treasure chests?" the warrior asked the thief as he followed them in.
“Yes…only treasure chests.” The thief narrowed his eyes. “Not a single danger.”
"My magic didn't detect any monsters either," the mage replied while casting a spell.
This doesn't seem right. There aren't any tests at all? Something feels off.
"Let's go check out the treasure chest first," the warrior smiled. "What if we make a name for ourselves with this one chest?"
The three imagined themselves squandering their futures, succumbing to their desires, walking to the treasure chest, and opening it.
There are indeed no traps here, and there are indeed no monsters. However, that doesn't mean there aren't mimics.
The treasure chest opened, and sharp teeth snapped shut, severing the warrior's head. The thief reached for his dagger, but the mimic swallowed him whole.
The mage, witnessing the bloody scene, was so terrified that she collapsed to the ground, urinating in the process. How could she possibly escape from a mimic at that distance?
The next moment, the mage's consciousness was disconnected from the world.
The above is a picture of a mimic hunting!
Huh? What are you looking at? I didn't do it. I was just following behind and observing.
The mimic was there, gnawing on the corpses, savoring the taste of humans.
Wow, now I know why mimics are so hated... they're really brutal. But because of your behavior, I've also been categorized as one of those dangerous creatures! I'm completely afraid to see humans now; if I do, all I'll do is fight them.
Ugh... I really want to chat with someone. Hey fellow countryman, can you hear me?
Then, the mimic over there turned its attention to me.
Huh...?
Chapter 16 Wrestling with a fellow countryman (?)
The mimic looked at me and stopped what it was doing. I looked at it too, frozen in place.
hungry.
Wow, there actually was an answer?!
The voice went directly into my brain. It was a different voice from the mysterious one, with a mechanical tone. I was certain that it was the mimic's voice.
But why is the first thing you say is "I'm hungry"?! Didn't you just eat people?! Three of them?!
I would absolutely refuse to eat people!
But I'm still hungry.
The mimic was staring at me. How should I put it? Kind of cute?
You smell so good. I'm hungry. I want to eat you.
Okay, this thing isn't cute at all!
I never expected this guy would want to eat me. I mean, we're clearly of the same kind, why are we killing each other?
Because of hunger.
This is how it answered me.
Damn it, you're an idiot...
I think the reason the mimic is so infamous is because it eats everything! What's so fragrant about me anyway?!
The scent of wealth.
Isn't this just the stench of money?! I know I've spent a lot of money lately, but that doesn't mean I've become tainted by it, does it? Besides, I'm broke now.
The mimic didn't answer me this time. Instead, it quickly approached me and extended its pincers towards me. There's no reasoning with it; I guess I'll just have to fight.
I deftly dodged its pincers, slammed it to the ground with my own, and then knocked it away. Spatial magic definitely wouldn't work at this point; it probably knows about 'distortion' too. Unfortunately, I don't know any other magic. If Slime-chan were here, it probably would have a way, right?
The mimic was knocked away by me, rolled twice on the ground before it regained its balance, propped itself up on its limbs, and charged at me again.
That last tap didn't do much good; my pliers don't seem to be able to break the mimic's shell. Have I been using such a powerful box (shell) all this time? But if it were someone else, I'd get annoyed too...
To be honest, I never imagined fighting against my compatriots like this. It's really troublesome. We can't even break through their armor and can't launch any effective attacks.
And this guy is really reluctant to leave! Is he really starving?! Or are you reincarnated like me, and in your previous life you were a starving ghost?!
There was no answer, of course. Asking such a stupid question was my mistake. I get it, anyway, I'm going to beat you to death today!
Faced with my fellow countrymen charging at me, I met their attack head-on as a sign of respect, but then it actually opened its mouth?! Damn it, why aren't you playing by the rules?!
I instinctively swung the pliers to try and swat it away, but unexpectedly, it bit into the pliers and then tore them off completely in one go.
it hurts--!?
I've never experienced a limb being severed in my past life, and it actually bit it off in an instant! I can't just roll on the ground begging for mercy, can I? I'm truly beyond tears right now. This is probably the first time I've suffered such a severe injury since I came into this world.
Wow... my HP is dropping...
Give me back my hand!
good to eat.
We still can't communicate. Is surviving in another world really this difficult...? Will my hand ever recover? I remember that changing the shell would restore it...
It chewed on my pincers with relish, then swallowed them, and then stared at me with a fanatical gaze. Stop looking at me like that, it's giving me the creeps.
Perhaps this is what a berserker is like; truly terrifying...
Speaking of which, I suddenly had a bold idea! What's inside a mimicry chest? Can I just use 'Twist' to reach inside?
On a whim, I used "Twisting," and half of the pincers sank into the magic circle, then I felt a soft touch. Ah~ that's it!
The mimic suddenly stopped, looking strange. Haha, I've got you! But I don't have time to torture you, my magic is almost gone.
I used all my remaining pliers to grab wildly, and my poor comrade rolled around hysterically. Wow, it looked so fun (laughs).
Then it stopped moving.
"Defeat the Mimic, gain 75 EXP x2, dropped items have been placed in the chest."
Ah... it's over.
We are all of the same origin, why are we so eager to harm each other?
Who noticed Chapter 17?
After the mimic died, its limbs and pincers disappeared, leaving only its shell. So that's how the mimic died?
I looked at the treasure chest I left behind, and the caption read: "Oak Chest." I didn't know what the quality of this chest was like, but it was definitely better than the tattered shell I got at the dragon ant nest, right?
Thinking this, I looked around to make sure no one was there, then I detached from my original shell and crawled into the new one. Sure enough, my HP, which had dropped to half, was instantly restored to full.
I stretched out my limbs and pincers, and they all returned to normal. I would have been in a real headache if any one of them were missing; they're all my bread and butter.
I feel quite comfortable after changing the shell; at least I don't have to run around in that almost useless shell anymore.
And when I first saw it, the new cover looked pretty good. It's like how a girl feels when she wears a beautiful new dress; as a former teenage girl, I felt the same way.
I kicked open my original shell, swung the pincers to check the feel, and continued on my way. Speaking of which, the adventurer seemed to have mentioned that this path "leads to the outside of the labyrinth."
I'll just write this down for now...maybe it'll come in handy later.
Thinking about it this way, I feel like I'm no different from an adventurer now. Entering dungeons to explore for treasure, fighting monsters to level up, rescuing my companions... it's kind of cool, isn't it?
One day I will become human again.
I made a silent vow once again.
A complaint came from a corner of the maze.
Ugh... these days are so boring...
I've been stuck in the maze for a while now, and those old-fashioned people keep lecturing me about traditions and obligations. Are those things really that important?
Is this edible? If it is, I can accept it.
However, this is impossible.
If the dignity of the nobility could be eaten, would so many impoverished nobles have died of poverty?
Hmph, I just don't have any good feelings towards those old folks.
Honestly, I'm so bored. That idiot Sa hasn't come to see me at all. I really want to find some fun.
Huh? What is this?
Hmm, this is quite interesting... It even has divinity...
So that's how it is. Is it a member of the goddess's retinue? Which deity's retinue is it? I have a feeling this is going to develop into something very interesting.
Hmm, let's go observe it.
I've lost track of time in this maze. I can't tell when to rest or when to move anymore; I usually only rest when I'm completely exhausted.
I'm exhausted today... That damn vine hedgehog wasted so much of my time. I would have rather gone to find slime-chan with that time.
But I admit that today's harvest was good. Not only did I get a new shell, but I also got some treasures from my compatriots, all of which looked quite nice.
Before that, I need to dig a hole and hide inside.
I skillfully used the pliers to dig through the maze's stone walls. Why didn't I use this to create a shortcut through the maze? Because the stone walls were much thicker than I had imagined, and if done properly, they could serve as a decent defensive measure.
Based on my experience living here, I quickly dug out my own shelter, a very simple structure, because I was only staying there for one night.
Once inside, I unloaded my spoils from this battle and began experimenting with them one by one. If possible, I hope to be able to borrow them tomorrow.
