The Cyanided Heart
Chapter 9: Journey to Despair
"You... hurry up!" Jessica's flare gun bullets drew straight pink smoke in the air.Buford struggled and yelled at Amy and Kate.
Amy shook her head feebly, while Kate just took two steps back, horror written on her face.Because if they escaped, Buford would most likely be killed.
"What are you doing in a daze... run!" Buford gritted his teeth and shouted.
There was the roar of vehicles in the distance. After a while, several armored vehicles blocked the way of Amy and Kate.Several soldiers held Amy and Kate's hands behind their backs, and another officer saluted Jessica.
"Report, Admiral Franz. A large residential area was found 1 km southeast, and troops have been sent to suppress the residents."
"It's just right." Jessica pointed to Buford, "Take these brats away together. Be gentle, I still want to ask them something."
"Of course." The officer saluted. Then the three were handcuffed back and forth, and they were thrown into the truck with no expression on their faces.
...
In the narrow and dark compartment, the captured people were crowded.I don't know how long it took, Amy was awakened by the bumps again.Kate seemed to be sitting with her, opposite Buford struggling to get out of the handcuffs.
"Are you all right?" Buford asked quietly.
Amy nodded.Kate moved her body forward and asked worriedly: "What to do, Buford. It's almost over after being caught by these German soldiers..."
"Well, don't worry... there's still a chance we can escape." Buford sighed, "although I'm not sure."
"That... that... I'm so scared..." A strange girl's voice came from beside her.Buford turned his head, and a girl with a side ponytail, a white shirt and a red plaid skirt was looking at him beggingly.
"Hey, don't worry," Kate reassured. "What's your name?"
"Me, um... Anne Fasek." The girl named Anne forced a smile, "I'm really scared...Ever since I got in the car, I was worried that I would be killed..."
"Ah, that... don't be afraid, Annie." Amy tried to reassure her, "We were also arrested here... well, so we are the same, don't be afraid, okay?"
"Yeah." Annie nodded, "Thank you. That...you..."
"You...can you be friends with me?" Annie was extremely firm when she said this, Buford was taken aback for a moment.
"Friend...friend?" Kate smiled, "Of course!"
"Hey...Annie is going to be our friend, I'm so happy!" Amy was a little surprised.
"Then... hang yourself with the hook!" Annie said mischievously, winking her eyes.
"Well! No change for 100 years!" Amy and Kate responded with a smile.
Buford smiled and looked at the three who swore.Annie's red plaid skirt was stained with mud from the truck, and her eyes were a little tired. But she still has an angelic smile, which may be the hope for the future.
I will definitely fulfill your wish.Buford looked ahead, as if Reed was there to listen to his promise.
...
Reed stood at the report station and stared at the falling leaves in the distance. He couldn't help but clutch the file in his hand. For the original volunteer, he considered for a long time, and finally told his parents that he wanted to join the army.
Reed came from a scholarly family. The mother said that although the army was dangerous, she could understand her son's thoughts, and the father always wanted Reed to undergo some training, so he readily agreed with his son's thoughts.
"My child, I wish you peace!" A simple farewell. Before leaving, Reed took a last look at his mother, and then got on the train to a distant place.
It is said that my son is kind, and I hope he can actively help those in need in the future. This is a phrase that Reid's mother often brings up when chatting with relatives.
...
Dear Colonel John Ornest, after our consideration, we have decided to suspend you for violating military regulations and the circumstances are serious. October 1942.
After receiving the letter from his subordinates until he opened it, Reed's heart was like an ocean of ice. What was the cause of the incident?Reed didn't know.Maybe it was a corrupt boss who was tracked down, maybe it was a German kid who was let go in a previous operation, maybe...
The unexplained suspension made Reed a little angry. However, the answer he received was only "to refuse any application from Colonel John Ornest".
Casual and sloppy announcements made myself so painful. The afternoon sun was shining on the potted plants by the window, and Reed was packing his luggage in the office alone. This is probably the last time he will be in this office.
Reed removed the M1891 Mosin-Nagant from the wall. After getting it, Reid began to fight with it.So far, I can't count how many times I have been on the battlefield with it.
Reed strapped his luggage to the back of his bike.Taking one last look at the gray building that had once been his unit, he got on his bike and left the street.Reed admits that he is not a qualified soldier, let alone a good husband. He also experienced love when he was young, but when the girls heard that he was a soldier, they all said, "I'm too busy with work to take care of my family" and then they left.
He can understand their thoughts, but he still often feels lonely.Just because he was busy with work, he couldn't understand the convenience. He really didn't agree with this idea. But in fact, he has been single until now, and this is the result.
Passing through the square as usual, he met a man who needed his help—Buford Fett. The boy was lying unconscious on the ground, and the people around were just watching.
"Are you his father?"
"Father...?" Reed was taken aback. The people around whispered and blocked his retreat.
"Let me just say, he really is..."
"Ha... you are so irresponsible!"
People around him chattered, even though Reed wasn't Buford's father.Ignoring the people around him, Reed noticed a young woman dressed as a boss who seemed to belong to a florist from the flowers on her hat.
"Excuse me...are you his family?" The woman asked cautiously, "He has lived in our store for a long time. If you are... take him home."
"I..." Reed wanted to say no.But the boy in front of him really needed help. Although the people around him could send him to the hospital, no one seemed willing.
Reed's kindness told him he should save the boy.And the surrounding crowd started throwing vegetable leaves and apples at Reed...anything they could throw at them.
"Yes!" Reed roared through gritted teeth, "Listen! I'm his father now! I wasn't before, but I am now!"
Reed picked up the unconscious Buford and rushed away from the crowd...while the angry crowd cursed him behind his back.
Amy shook her head feebly, while Kate just took two steps back, horror written on her face.Because if they escaped, Buford would most likely be killed.
