Monster Hunter in League of Legends
Chapter 23: Choosing the Katana, Choosing Success
With Milio by his side, Tarin slowed down and began to tailor-make an Insect Glaive for Nidalee.
Meanwhile, Milio watched as Tarin began a new round of forging, his face filled with surprise and curiosity.
During this process, Tarin activated the vitality within the Odogaron material, unleashing its hidden firepower and extracting this ecosystem to create a new cycle. Although Milio didn't directly perceive what life energy or dragon vein energy was, he could clearly sense that the flames Tarin created during forging were completely different from the destruction described by Grandmother Lupe.
It's a continuous, stable cycle.
This was the first time Milio had ever felt such a flame, a flame unlike any other. Before he knew it, Milio was completely captivated.
Although the forging process slowed down, with the groundwork laid by the Odogaron One-Handed Sword, Tarin became quite adept at forging the Insect Glaive.
Ultimately, the most difficult aspect of Dragon Vein Forging is that the craftsman needs to grasp the energy properties and life cycle of the magical materials themselves.
Don't be fooled by the fact that in the game, once you have all the materials, you can find a craftsman and forge it in less than thirty seconds. In reality, the Odogaron armor set that Tarlin himself is wearing took the craftsman over a month of meticulous forging.
The reason is simple: before the Azure Star and even before the Third Fleet arrived at the Starry Sky, the craftsmen at the Starry Sky outpost were unfamiliar with the Odogaron, a new monster that was making its debut on the new continent. It was a completely new species that they had only heard of but never seen.
In fact, when Tarin suddenly found so many Odogaron materials, it even surprised and inquired of the Grand Master, but Tarin brushed it off by saying that he had "accidentally encountered an Odogaron corpse and took the opportunity to skin it."
Yes, this is also why Tarin feels helpless about Monster Hunter World... Although it helped him complete his initial accumulation, as a price to pay, there are too many things to consider. He can't transform on the spot, unpack materials on the spot, and then quickly recover by chugging healing potions like he can in Runeterra.
As he pondered, and with the establishment of the ecological cycle, the fire-attribute dragon vein energy began to perfect within the weapon. In just a moment, the Insect Glaive was completed.
Removing it from the charcoal fire, Tarin's dragon-like arms did not suffer much damage. Instead, with a slight shake, the floating ash was dispelled, and then a strangely shaped, long-handled weapon, resembling both a spear and a club, came into view.
The entire staff was reshaped from the blood-red horn and bones of the Odogaron. Under Tarin's sculpting, the staff was covered with twisted muscle textures, and when power was injected and blood energy burst forth, the flesh seemed to still be pulsating.
The middle and front sections each have a pair of ferocious claw-like barbs, like open beast claws, which can lock onto prey during thrusts and tear through armor during sweeps. A light-colored bone blade extends from the end, while the main blade is made of multiple layers of keratin, with the tip forked into sharp fangs.
As Nidalee gazed at the weapon that might belong to her, a hint of anticipation flickered in her eyes.
As a wild animal, Nidalee was certain that with just a slight swipe, the spear could tear a twisted, unhealable open wound into an enemy.
Such a wound, for any creature, will tip the scales of victory or defeat in a battle. For one thing, the continuous bleeding alone is something most wild animals cannot withstand.
Tarin didn't keep her in suspense and immediately handed the Insect Glaive to Nidalee.
As Nidalee held the Tarlin Insect Glaive and stroked it up and down, feeling the muscle texture on the Glaive and the lingering heat of its recent forging, a hint of joy appeared in her eyes.
However, Nidalee is Nidalee after all. After the initial joy, she quickly regained her composure, but a hint of relaxation appeared in her eyes as she asked, "This gun feels a little different from the spear we used before."
"Okay, I'll teach you some usage later." Tarin nodded.
After glancing at the time, Tarin said, "Let's stop forging here and go take a rest."
Tarlin looked at Lupe and said, "Moreover, after all this forging, I think Lupe has a more direct understanding of my abilities. Perhaps we can have a more open and honest discussion on the existing basis."
Upon hearing this, Lupe nodded understandingly, his gaze complex as he said, "That's indeed the case... Mr. Tallinn."
Lupe knew of Tallinn's name from the elderly traveling merchant, but before that, that was all he knew. Now, however, Lupe specifically referred to him as "Sir," undoubtedly to express his respect.
Or rather, by now, Lupe has more or less realized that, given the ability Tarin has demonstrated, if he really had any designs on the family, there was absolutely no need for him to go through all this trouble.
All you need to do is find any elemental tower, and the city lord, scholars, or even Yuntars within will be happy to help find their family—a powerless and helpless loser family—who were banished for choosing the wrong side in the political struggle and were thus expelled, all for the sake of the possible 'Axiom of Life' and this miraculous forging technology.
Thinking this, a slight warmth also rose in Lupe's heart.
Although it sounds strange, if everything is really as Tarin said, then perhaps this is the opportunity he has been waiting for for decades to make his family rise again.
Thinking it over, Lupe turned around and said, "I'll go tell the family to prepare a feast... Hmm, the woodlands have been rainy and damp lately, so let the beasts rest in the village. As for food, there are still about a hundred sheep in the village, which should be enough to feed thirty to fifty Pakarin cats."
"That's troublesome."
Sensing Lupe's overtures, Tallinn did not refuse.
In non-intensive hunting situations, Pacarin cats don't actually need to eat much; they just need to stay full.
In this situation, including the organs, one sheep can feed three or four adult forest cats, and even more young and cubs. Although this reduces some pressure on the village, it also prevents them from going hungry.
Moreover, Tallinn was well aware that although he was doing this for his own reasons, the opportunities the Lupe family gained in the process were not easily obtained like cattle or sheep.
After Lupe left, Nidalee turned her gaze to Tarin and asked softly, "Weren't you planning to get a new weapon? Why didn't you continue forging?"
"The manufacturing process for the new weapon is a bit complicated, so it needs to be redesigned."
Tallinn shrugged, a hint of helplessness in his eyes.
After living there for a while, Tarin had more or less realized that dual swords were not quite suitable for combat in Runeterra.
To be precise, it's because dual blades are too aggressive. When Demon Mode is activated, combined with the ecology of the Odogaron, it's easy to get carried away and launch a fierce attack if you're not careful during the battle.
This poses a serious risk in Runeterra.
Especially in the presence of magic, like the Noxian Iron Maiden Riel, whose innate magic "Iron Manipulation" can control steel, she simply extracted an iron ore from the mountain and compressed it into the armor she wore.
In terms of character design, it's simply illogical. Don't let her support role in the game fool you; if we go by the lore, over 80% of the champions in League of Legends would be instantly killed by Riel.
In this situation, it becomes necessary to switch to a weapon that can be used for both offense and defense.
This was undoubtedly a difficult decision.
And there's a reason for that.
As is well known, Monster Hunter players often exhibit different personality traits when using different weapons.
For example, the Greatsword Shrimp, which is the underlying logic of the Monster Hunter series, will have an uncontrollable urge to fan the sleeping creature with all its might when it sees it.
Also, pay attention to its sound effects mods; if you install them, there's a high probability the person is gay.
One-handed? Central air conditioning.
Big Hammer? A boring, honest guy.
Charge Blade? His mind is filled with hopeless sister complex.
A sword-wielding axe? He's a dragon lover; he just grabs a monster's head and charges in.
Guns? Cowardly and lecherous.
A flute? A people-pleasing personality.
Light crossbow? Avoidant personality.
Heavy crossbow? Old Jin is inclined to.
Bow and arrow? They'd shatter at the slightest touch.
Insect guillotine? All talk and no action.
A spear? Turtle Man.
Dual swords... As his ex-wife, let's just label him as having violent tendencies.
Therefore, Tarin plans to bring his talent to the katana first.
As for the dual swords? Good luck to him.
Well, while saying this might sound like a slanderous statement to other weapon players, considering that this is the evaluation given by the Katana Master, and taking into account online reputation and the legend of the Katana Master...
Not surprising then.
Thinking about it this way, Tarin felt a little regretful. If it really was the dual swords that were practically a melee wheelchair in the game, then Tarin would definitely not have chosen to switch.
Unfortunately, this is reality.
While dual swords are powerful, their defensive capabilities and strategic maneuvering are debatable. In the game, a perfect dodge can avoid all damage except for the killer move, but in reality, there is not so much room for error.
The katana's Foresight and Iaijutsu are both attacks that exploit openings based on life energy, making them more applicable in real life than the perfect dodge mechanic in games.
The reason why Tarin did not choose to forge the katana immediately was also very simple.
TMD Capcom did not design the Odogaron Greatsword.
Although Odogaron was the second most powerful Elder Dragon in the Rotten Vale before the release of the Iceborne DLC, after Vaal Hazak, there were only four weapon types made from Odogaron materials: Dual Blades, Lance, Sword and Shield, and Light Bowgun. There was no Long Sword derivative for Tarlin's upcoming job change.
Like the Odogaron, the Great Jagras and the Great Jagras also happen to lack weapon derivatives in the long sword series.
Very helpless.
However, Tarin was not someone who could be easily defeated. Rather, he was preparing to take this opportunity to design a Odogaron Greatsword specifically for himself.
Although this may sound far-fetched, the Odogaron is the ecosystem that Tarlin is most familiar with now, and there is a lot of related material available. There is no need to worry about materials, there is no cost of trial and error, and you can try and fail indefinitely.
There is still plenty of time, and it is also the perfect opportunity for Milio to better understand the connection between fire and life. Therefore, the process of forging the Odogaron Greatsword is an excellent teaching process.
In fact, after forging the Odogaron Sword and Shield and the Odogaron Insect Glaive, Tarin has now realized why Odogaron materials have not appeared in the Long Sword series in Monster Hunter.
Although the Odogaron seems to fit perfectly with the katana, its tangled claws and fangs are a perfect match for the 'axe-shaped' branch of the katana, Tarin discovered during the forging process that both the Odogaron one-handed sword and the insect glaive were mostly made from the tanned skin, muscles, bones, and tendons of the Odogaron.
The most iconic creature in its ecosystem, the "Odogaron," is not present at all.
During the forging process, Tarin understood the reason—because the Odogaron's claws resembled those of felines, but with an atypical, special claw sheath structure, and the serrations on them were like an onion, layer upon layer.
When the outer layer becomes dull, there's no need for additional polishing; just bite off the outermost layer to expose the new teeth inside.
There's no need to worry about the claws' consumption rate, because the Odogaron's claws are similar to its teeth—
The teeth of the Odogaron are densely packed with capillaries, which can regenerate even if they are broken. The same applies to its claws; as long as the deepest bone is intact, new claws can grow rapidly and continuously.
During hunting, this allows Odogaron to avoid worrying about weapon wear and tear, and even allows the broken outer claws to get stuck in wounds during combat, causing continuous bleeding and pain, and preventing the wounds from healing.
However, during the forging process, the claws of the Odogaron are almost unreliable base materials for forging.
As of now, Tarlin doesn't have many ideas or clues about how to use the materials and ecology of the Odogaron to create an Odogaron Longsword that suits him.
However, Tarlin didn't pay too much attention to it, but simply put the matter aside for the time being, intending to think about it slowly. Then he led Nidalee toward the village hall.
It was impossible for the villagers not to be worried about the arrival of the beasts. However, Lupe clearly held immense prestige in the village, and despite their concerns, the villagers refrained from harming them, simply maintaining a careful distance.
The herd of beasts was actually quite wary, after all, this was their first time in a place with so many humans—and in a completely unfamiliar environment.
Nidalee was tasked with maintaining order within the herd, and Tarlin also planned to acclimate the Pacarin cats to human activity in advance to facilitate the subsequent resettlement of the herd.
Although it cannot match the independence of the flesh-toothed beast, the Pakarin cat, with its high intelligence and fighting ability compared to ordinary felines and canines, as well as its potential as a descendant of the Vastaya Shari, could become the national animal of Ixtal if developed properly.
