Chapter 5 Challenging the Forbidden Forest Overlord
Bai Lin disliked this place very much, even felt somewhat nauseous. Soft spider webs were everywhere—on the ground, at the tree roots, and between the trees overhead. There were also white insect eggs in the bushes, with an unidentified yellowish-green liquid on them. As Bai Lin walked through the piles of fallen leaves in the forest, many small spiders scurried out and scattered in groups.
Bai Lin tried to seal the little spider, but to no avail; the Pokédex did not react to the young spider.
After passing through the woods, there was a large clearing in front of us, but the ground and the hillside were full of deep holes, some as small as a fist, and some big enough for a Volkswagen Beetle to drive into.
As anyone who has read Harry Potter knows, these are the offspring of Aragog, the eight-eyed giant spider kept by Hagrid. By this time, Aragog was very old, and his control over his offspring had greatly diminished. When Aragog died, all the eight-eyed spiders in the Forbidden Forest were freed from restraint and began attacking humans. Later, they were even driven by Voldemort to attack Hogwarts.
Looking at the caves covering the mountains and fields, even someone as bold as Bai Lin felt a little uneasy. If they all came out at once, no matter how fast he chanted the incantation, he wouldn't be able to handle it.
But since he was already here, he couldn't leave empty-handed. He continued north, thinking he could escape at any time, and then pointed to the nearest large cave and said, "Blazing Flames!"
A flame ignited in the cave, but it was less intense than a torch and soon went out on its own, leaving Bai Lin somewhat embarrassed.
The flames were small, but enough to alert the creatures inside. Bai Lin heard a rustling sound, and soon a huge black spider, as big as a round table, crawled out of the burrow, followed by a second, a third...
Bai Lin gritted his teeth, pointed his wand, and said, "Petrify them all!" The giant spider at the front froze instantly, its black body turning grayish-white. Bai Lin felt a surge of pride, hehe, this move is really useful!
But just as he was about to use the same trick on the second giant spider, he suddenly felt dizzy and a bit overwhelmed by magic. However, the spell still worked, petrifying one of the second spider's legs.
The spiders didn't hesitate; they swarmed forward, each opening its disgusting mouthparts to pounce on Bai Lin.
During this period, the eight-eyed spiders in the Forbidden Forest will indeed not attack humans unless provoked, but they will not tolerate intruders who break into their lair. After all, who would refuse a treat delivered to their door?
Bai Lin swallowed hard and quickly drew his longsword, plunging it into the spider's mouth and piercing through the head of one of the attacking spiders. A stream of green fluid gushed from the spider's mouth. Bai Lin quickly pulled his sword back, but he was still splashed with the disgusting fluid.
Bai Lin dodged and counterattacked, but more and more spiders emerged from the burrow. Although Bai Lin's swordsmanship was already quite good, he was struggling to deal with so many spiders. Helplessly, Bai Lin only remembered a few simple spell names from the Harry Potter world and secretly regretted not making a cheat sheet.
After killing countless spiders, they finally retreated to the withered forest, their bodies covered in spider fluids, looking quite disheveled. The encyclopedia showed no reaction to these spiders, which were the size of round tables and about a meter tall, still classifying them as juveniles and unable to complete the seal. Bai Lin suddenly felt a sense of utter disbelief. No wonder the Eight-Eyed Giant Spider was classified as a level 6-8 creature in the encyclopedia.
Until a colossal creature crawled out of the largest hole in the ground. As soon as the colossal creature emerged, the surrounding giant spiders parted to make way for Bai Lin, encircling him from all sides, as if forming an ancient Roman amphitheater.
Bai Lin took one look and exclaimed, "Holy crap!" This eight-eyed spider was the size of a delivery truck, with legs as thick as a person's embrace and eight white eyes the size of plates. It was none other than Aragog, which Hagrid had placed in the Forbidden Forest.
By this time, Aragog was over fifty years old, in the twilight of the giant spider, and had developed severe cataracts. Although it had many large eyes, it could not actually see anything.
Bai Lin immediately recognized Aragog as a level 8 creature, undoubtedly the king of the Forbidden Forest.
Bai Lin's slaughter of so many spiders enraged Aragog, but even with Bai Lin's +2 Magic Creature Affinity, it was of little use at this point.
Harry Potter also spoke with Aragog, who helped Harry clear Hagrid's name. However, Aragog had no interest in chatting with Bai Lin at this point, and Bai Lin, determined to succeed, pressed forward instead of retreating, meeting Aragog head-on.
Aragog has a pair of huge pincers, like two giant scythes. Although its eight milky-white eyes could no longer see the white scale, Aragog could still roughly know the location of the white scale by smell and sound, and extended its pincers to slash at the white scale.
Bai Lin dodged Aragog's pincers and bravely charged to Aragog's large head, slashing his sword fiercely at Aragog's two enormous pincers.
Aragog was simply too large, and there were hardly any points of attack on the spider's front. Its two enormous fangs blocked most of Aragog's face, and the fangs were extremely sturdy. Bai Lin's attack only scraped off some of the grayish-white hairs on the fangs, without causing any damage.
Aragog opened its jaws, its two pincers lunging at Bai Lin. Bai Lin's heart tightened; this bite would likely kill him instantly. Aragog wouldn't even need to inject venom; a few quick paws from him would be enough to decapitate him. Bai Lin immediately regretted his overconfidence… He should have waited until his magic power was higher before taking this risk.
Despite his regret, Bai Lin quickly lay down on the ground, not caring about his elegant posture, and dodged Aragog's fangs. Bai Lin raised his head and, without saying a word, thrust his sword at Aragog's jaw.
Hagrid's longsword was extremely sharp, piercing half a foot deep in one go. Bai Lin knew that such a small wound would be useless against such a large spider. He gripped the hilt with both hands and forcefully pried open Aragog's jaw, cutting a large gash more than a foot long.
A stream of blue-green fluid gushed out and drenched Bai Lin's head. By this point, Bai Lin's original color was no longer visible. Fortunately, the venom of the eight-eyed giant spider was hidden in its fangs, and its blood was not particularly poisonous or corrosive. Otherwise, Bai Lin would have been dead in an instant.
Aragog felt excruciating pain and frantically raised its large head, poking at Bai Lin with its two pincers like pounding garlic. Bai Lin was unleashing its full potential, roaring as it dodged each attack. Finally, it spotted an opening in Aragog's side and squeezed through, circling around to Aragog's side.
Bai Lin suddenly realized that this enormous spider had some difficulty turning its body, mainly because it needed to coordinate all eight legs. Bai Lin felt his magic power recover somewhat, so he quickly used a spell on one of Aragog's legs, "Petrify All!"
Even with low magic power, only petrifying part of that foot, Aragog still felt as if it had stepped into thin air, and its body tilted to one side. It was really old and not as agile as it was in its prime.
Bai Lin quickly circled around to Aragog's back and swung his sword twice at its abdomen. Aragog's abdominal carapace was relatively soft, and Bai Lin's longsword cut several deep wounds.
